490Defense, stop there or keep going?Follow

Hello all, was just wondering if a prot war is supposed to stop at 490 def and then focus more on armor and hitpoints, or is it best to keep raising def as high as possible for the parry, dodge etc bonuses?

In otherwords, what is the best balance for tanking in general between defensive rating, armor, and hitpoints?

Thank you =)

You've pretty much answered your own question. You're right, you should go for +defenes gear after 490 +def skill. It should not be sought for nor avoided, you should simply prioritize stam and avoidance ratings.

Well to add another question similar this one.

If i switch my gems around. i can either get:

A. 13,5k hp and 520ish Defense.

B. 12,6k hp and 550ish Defense.

B meaning some more parry, dodge and block, but is 900 hp better?

550 def is useless, instead go for direct gear ( not def rating but parry or dodge or wtv) so take those instaed and stam czu u only want 490 def rating for no crits after that it's useless. you get like 0.4% in each per def rating, so instead go look up gear on thottbot and grind. good luck

Cheers to a fellow tank,
Chaps

Dumped my defense gems.

Got some +8 dodge/parry gems instead.

~520 defense and ~13k hp. But much more + dodge/parry.

Not necessarily. Stacking Dodge and Parry gives you huge suvivability. You'll take bursty and irregular damage, but that shouldn't be a problem post-13k HP and skilled healers.

Sweet thx guys, I appreciate the feedback. I just was wondering because people were giving me sh*t for 11k unbuffed hp, but my def rating was 490+ and I always try to explain to non-tanks that HP sucks if you lose it fast; not getting hit at all helps a lot more than being able to take more hits. These effin noobs want to see a big number on your hp bar and thats all, just wonderin if anyone else ever had this problem when they were starting out on obtaining their prot spec gear.

P.S. does the 490 def crit immunity apply to PvP or only versus mobs?

spiky is always bad damage, and it gets worse the farther you go, which is why 99% of bt running guilds [and even ssc/te] have tanks stacking stamina. even if you have 99% avoidance, you can get hit hard enough 2 or 3 times in a row and you'll drop from having that 13k -> dead if your healers aren't constant spamming.

absolutely, for kara, avoidance is generally better because mobs don't hit as hard , but for everything after that stam is superior because you just get hit so much harder. also, having a bigger health pool allows your healers to relax a bit more when tanking new harder bosses.

i suggest stacking armor/stam if your a maintank and if you plan on offtanking raids id go more defense rating/avoidance.

no 490 defense does not apply to pvp.

490 defense is for level 73 boss mobs crit proof. Which is 5.6% reduction to their chance to crit you. (490 - 350(Base) = +140 defense skill, or 140/25 = 5.6% crit reduction).

For players...

It's a little different. Say your average MS war attacks you. Say... with a 25% crit chance (average). So to equal that, requires much much more defense.

+25 defense = 1% crit reduction (you have 350 already)
You'd need +625 defense skill (not rating) to become crit proof against a lvl 70 player with 25% crit. That's 975 defense skill total.
