Think my VoidWalker is brokenFollow

#1 Aug 31 2007 at 5:37 AM Rating: Decent
Hey guys,

Just dinged 26 in the Wetlands last night. After 6 levels of running around in contested areas... a Hordie finally got me. It was pretty cheap too. A lock 34 snuck up on me while I was turning in a quest. I was checking out the items as a reward, next thing I know I'm feared and dead. Meh. I'll get him back.

Anyway, I honestly think my VoidWalker is broken.

I send him at the mob. I cast Curse of Agony. I then throw in a IC Corruption. Then throw a Immolate at the mob. By that time it looks like VW has taunted the mob for a second time (slight reference to Quest for the Holy Grail).

Well I start wanding the mob. I only got a green wand, it's not some blue wand where dps is huge (like a full 7.0 more dps). Well I end up tanking, while still wanding this mob.

I see VW do the taunt move, but the mob never looks his direction. This really has me a bit worried. I'm in a PvP server, and after some of the fights I'm about 50% HP, prime gankage material.

Am I doing something wrong here? I really don't want to just stand back and do nothing. Prolly cause I want the fights to be over fast so I can keep moving, standing still is only a matter of time until a ?? finds me lol (I have PvP servers btw, but decided to try it again).

Any suggestions would help. Thanks

This was a Horde (my people, so good on him) not getting taunted by your VW? Makes sense to me...we humans have freedom fo thought, after all...

Lol, No. That 1st part was a little story. The question starts after the "anyway".

I'm referring to regular grinding mobs. I just did not feel the need to throw another post about how I got ganked for the 1st time lol.

Oh yeah

Do you have the Imp. Drain Soul talent? That is a godsend to Drain Tankers. 10% less threat.

Also, try not using your wand until later in the fight. Maybe hit Life Tap once and then Drain Life. Drain Life is pretty low threat, whereas the wand may be adding threat with every hit. Not entirely sure how that works, but maybe that will help.

Ah. Righto. Fair enough. :)

Thanks Lathais

Hmm, tap once.... I'll try that. I think that Torment needs to get updated (hopefully soon...just checked it's lv 30 T.T) after I got the rank 2, I went a level or so with no aggro problems, but now it's back.

So far I'm going down the Affliction line. Just starting to unlock Imp. Corruption, then I'll get Curse of Exhaustion. Then see where I'll go from there. I'd prefer not to be a drain tank, only because I could be doing my drain thing and someone can sneak up on me, while I'm channeling my spell.

I'll give it a shot tho. It would be nice to bring out Succy now that she just got Seduce, but she can't tank worth the crap lol.

Draining is one of the strengths of an affliction build. You can still look around while Draining, and can break the cast by moving or jumping, so if someone sneaks up on you, it isn't really that bad. Personally, I Drain Tank and have never had a problem when people sneak up on me. I am on a PvP server too.

Hmm, I'll have to read up on my drain tanking in the stickies. I did get that fel concentation 5/5 so I'm at 70% chance to not be interrupted.

Here's my build so far: Gyfford- Blackwing Lair

Oh if you looked at my current gear. This server is rough. Either it's totally top heavy or there are a lot of gold sellers. Most of the level 10 gear is over 1G. That's when there is stuff in the AH... I'm sorry but I'm not spending 6G on a green bracers of... So yeah, it could be much better, sadly.

I went with a Medium PvP server... Little did I know it was 90% Hordies and 10% Alliance :/ Literally my guildies said it's something like 3 Hordies to 1 Alliance population.

for draintanking at lvl 26 you might want to try this build.
http://talentcalculator.merciless-gilde.com/?lang=en&v=2.0.3&dl=OS83MC8zMDI6MTAwMy01OzEwMDQtMjsxMDA3LTI7MTEwMS0xOzEwMDEtNTsxMDAyLTJ8fHw=

There is no need for you to put any points in surpression nor into amplify curse.
What you do is DoT your target(s) and draintank them, i always understood draintanking as where I am the tank and take the beating, but leech life in order to outlive the mob(s) (outliving might sound somewhat like "barely surviving", but you will actually do much better than that)
Hope for the occasional nightfall procc and make your pet attack one target as well (don´t let it get the aggro). I usually used the Imp for more life and it does decent dmg.
Your next two points are best spend in grim reach and than going for siphon life.

I put Amp. Curse because most likely I'll be running away from ?? toons, I'd like to dump a Amp. Curse and a Exhaustion on them, also with the Suppression I'm hoping it'll give me a few more levels higher that it will land more than not on.

Oh also, I don't want to waste the mana on having a drain fail on me lol. However I did take a break from going 5/5 on Suppression so I can get my Imp Corruption.

So far my VW has been tanking about 1/2 the fight. The harder hitting mobs worry me, but not enough to respec for straight Drain tanking.

I'll look into that tho. I may end up respec'ing. That is why I asked the forums. Trying to keep an open mind lol, just a clothie straight tanking... scares the h3ll out of me XD

as you get closer and closer to 20,30,40,50 etc... (the levels that voidy gets his new taunt) it gets easier and easier to pull hate from him as he's using a taunt that hasn't changed for X levels and his dps hasn't changed much too while yours is constantly increasing at a higher rate. basically, as you get closer and closer to getting voidy's latest torment rank, his tanking abilities become worse and worse.

I hope you do not plan to spend 3+ talentpoints on trying to cast a CoE on ?? toons, thats ridiculous!

Well i never used the void for tanking not even a single lvl and went from 1-70 in 13 day and a few hours.

Just tank the mobs yourself and use the Imp to fire at the mobs as well. Worked like a charm for me. I did have a look at your gear, but can´t really remember it. If you have some nice guildmates have them help you go through Castle Shadowfang a few times there is some neat clothdrops in there. Make sure you get the Robes from the Warlockquest and later on the Robes of the Lich.

One popular method of leveling for Warlocks is Drain Tanking. You go Affliction, get 5/5 in Fel Concentration. And there ya go, drain tank pwnage. It only gets better with Soul Siphon also. Don't worry, Warlocks are the only class that get better as they level. There, is MUCH, MUCH, more fun stuff to come =].

Drain hunting is a matter of timing (and quite often, doing nothing). It's hard to put in pauses, because the natural impulse is to get in that little shot that will kill the mob a bit faster.

When you go too fast, the unfortunate side effect is you pulling aggro, and then your VW will have to do 30% more damage than you to get aggro back. The way to prevent that is timing your attack so that the VW never loses aggro in the first place.

1. Wait until your VW arrives and has his taunt in BEFORE your CoA and Corr.
2. Before you cast Immolate, wait again for your VW to get in an extra taunt.
3. Instead of wanding, Life Tap once (allowing VW to get in another taunt) and then Drain Life
4. If you're farming shards, use Drain Soul as a finisher.

The mob shouldn't ever get close to you.

It's all about play-style, you can always respec to try a different build/attack pattern; if you don't like this new style, change back. Lot's of flexibility :)

You can always exclude Immo until your VW gets a new taunt.
But you can hardly have fast killing with doing something and stay careful and on alert.
After all if you rolled on PvP I suppose you are fond a bit of dangerous living no?

Read the compendium. Several people have missed the difference between drain TANKING and drain HUNTING (but not all - Mike, as usual, gave a sharp answer).

You are never drain tanking if you have a taunting pet out. That's drain hunting. Why? Your pet taunts and holds agro akin to a hunter pet. You are, after dotting target, tapping and draining (like drain tanking) to restor your health and mana, to lower or eliminate downtime for your grind session.

You can only make drain hunting work, imho, by doing the following: sic vw, do coa and cor, wait for second taunt to land, cast immo, tap self to refill mana pool, wait a bit maybe, drain life to repair health pool. Now wand (if nec.).

(edit, immo is not needed for many greens - I usually use immo on yellows and above - further, some mobs seem to need three taunts landing)

If you can't handle that regimin, try drain tanking. The above, or somethign much like it, must be done to allow vw to maintain agro.

Gyf, there is a point in the 20s when the vw - well, up til 20 you can abuse the vw, it seems his taunt works better. But from around lvl 18 or so on, his taunt just seems weaker (esp. around the "zero levels", as was stated above). So, learn to help vw keep his agro - or don't use him. GL

Get a threat meter like KTM. When I went to drain hunting, I started to use my KTM with my voidy and it worked great.

KTM...its not just for instances

Wait for the void to taunt 2 times before attacking.
