I just got it but given the high mana cost for relatively low returns I wasn't sure when it would be useful. So I did a little search and it seems people mostly hate it. Which is odd, because it's in pretty much every sample build. So now I'm wondering:

Will I ever use it?
When?

Edited to add: Okay so not every sample build. Like, um, not the one I pulled out of the sticky. Doh! Seems I got my links confused. Should I dump it? Has anyone ever found it useful?

It's AOE, you should get it. There have been several occasions where I've been in groups with no AOE and the Holy Priest saved our bacon.

Also, AOE generally has a fairly high mana cost, no matter what class you play. All in all if it's doing 400 damage and 400 healing, versus a mage who can only get up to 600-700 base damage with an AE, you're ahead of the curve. Plus it's ZERO threat, which is all good.

There are a select few uses for Holy Nova in PvE. It's useful in multi-mob scenarios where a Prayer would pull aggro (the Gauntlet in heroic Shattered Halls comes to mind); there the advantage is the zero threat factor. And yes, if you're in a situation that demands AoE and you're the only one who has it, it can be useful, even if it blows your mana pool.

In PvP it's considerably better. While it eats through your mana pool quickly, it's an instant heal that does nominal damage to boot. Combine with Power Infusion for double the fun. Particularly good on defense in Alterac Valley, although it has its place in other PvP scenarios too.

Thanks for the replies! I'll keep it for a while at least and see how it works for me.

not to mention that almost every time HN hits 3+ targets you get a crit. And crit procs SoL, so you get a free smite with every HN :)

And HN intrerupts AoE, and delays casting...

And many other nice uses...

I respec'ed holy this weekend and starting using HN in arathi basin (20-29). My damage output jumped considerably. It's also super useful to get attackers off the flag if there are a multiples.

Also, when you know you're dying because you've been left alone to guard a flag and 5 horde coming running in, it's nice to empty your mana pool into the bad guys. The healing it gives you lets you have the time to run the mana empty, and delay the capture of the flag until reinforcements arrive.

I have a question though, will this only heal people in your group or will it heal all the people in your raid (that are within range)? I am pretty sure that I've observed it only healing the people in my group, but I wanted to be sure.

Thanks

Holy Nova only affects your group.

Think about it, otherwise it would be quite imbalanced if you have 39 raid memebers and you do an instant heal which goes for like 20k then :)

lol that would be sweet. 39k healing no threat.

On a side note, an AoE with no threat is good in 70 instances, BAD when running lowbies through lower instances.

I couldn't figure out why the mobs wouldn't stop attacking my little buddy :(

I'd say for lower instances: Pain on everything (not top tank, but scaled to mob health - rank 4 or 5 for RFC) and when they gather up on you, shield and holy nova.

Anyway, holy nova is best to be used in battlegrounds (pain suppresion + reflective shield + improved inner fire + holy nova = win), and only few instances/raids benefit from it.

I use holy nova all the time for certain pulls in BC instances. There are plenty of pulls (steam vaults and auchenai crypts are two that come to mind) with bunches of low health non-elite mobs to DPS down. If you have a mage or warlock to AOE, let them do the dirty work. But if you don't, it sure is handy to do it yourself.

Otherwise, the real reason I got it was to run lowbies through instances. You can kill the mobs and keep your lowbie alive at the same time.

I loved it when I ran Stratholme bug trap. It's the only form of AOE for priests. If you're holy you can dump 1 point and get this. Most of time, you won't be needing the spell but when you do, you will damn sure be thankful that you have it =) Besides, the spell itself isn't bad at all. Many people complain about its high mana cost compared to the healing done, but it's instant, no threat, and also is AOE damage spell in one button. I think the mana cost is fine for all these benefits.

I use HN all the time when the mobs are VERY close to dead. Assuming my group isn't in real need of better healing, spamming the HN a couple times will both increase the hp of the group and kill the mobs, causing my spirit tap to kick in. Since there's no aggro, I don't have to worry about pulling any more adds to the party either.

holy nova is amazing for doing lowbie instances i have seen a 70 priest run a stocks run in like 3 mins a part about 7 mins total fastest ever even better than a mage but yeah it has its uses way more usefull than healing well or whatever thats for shure

I use it mostly for rank 1.

In BG's it keeps nubs off of flags, and that's good enough.
