Got a quick question for you Kara Rogues out there. I am the Kara coordinator for my guild and we have a rogue that just recently got keyed. When I armoried him, I definately made the decision for him to not run this week do in fact to his sub-par gear primarily. For the most part I see a lot of his gear is ok for normal 5 mans (doubtful for even heroics as a lot of it is not even enchanted and some of it is early 60's stuff), but Im no Rogue expert so I came asking your advice. Here is his armory,

http://www.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Elune&n=Silentkills

Can you guys give me ideas on which way to lead him so that he doesn't end up gimping our group at some point when he is better geared? Is his spec good? Im the hunter lead for my guild, and I have no idea about rogues basically, but I need to give him ideas and goals to shoot for so that he can come at some point. Thanks,

V

The build would be quite good (actually quite similar to mine)... IF the guy was wiedling SWORDS (he's got 5/5 swords spec)... but he's apparently wielding daggers. Maybe he's now respeccing after getting new daggers... or maybe he just doesn't have a clue about what he's doing, but that's not so probable because the build is rather decent if it wasn't for the weapons discrepency. Just talk to him to see what's going on and if (1) he's sticking to his daggers and speccing combat daggers, with a slower offhand (or muti with two slow daggers, but I doubt this due to the poison immunity problem) or (2) keeping his build but equipping swords, in which case he might check my build (quite similar, without riposte and also better to have Murder than Improved Evisc).

As for the stuff bonuses, he might want to increase a bit his hit chances, I think 150-200 is good for kara, while keeping around 1200 AP and 7000-8000 life (he's good on AP and life).

First of all, tell him to drop the druid chest piece. There are several better drops in instances like SLabs. Also, he needs to upgrade those bracers. There are some quest bracers in Netherstorm that would be easy to aquire and provide a significant upgrade. His legs could use an upgrade, like the X52 Pilot Leggings from Netherstorm. Those boots are again more geared towards rawr bears instead of rogues.

Also, what's with the tanking trinket? There are several AP trinkets out there that are easy to obtain just by questing. The daggers look okay, but with that slow offhand, he'd be better served using a 41/20/0 Mutilate spec. If he wants to do Combat Daggers, that offhand speed needs to be as fast as possible, something along the lines of 1.5, or there abouts.

Now on to the talent spec. Jeez, where to start:

1. Combat daggers build without Improved Backstab or Opportunity is just crap.
2. Deflection and Riposte are useless in raiding. Drop those points and move them elsewhere.
3. He has Sword Spec and not Dagger Spec, yet he's using two daggers. Big mistake.
4. Imp SS and Aggression are more suited for swords/maces/fists builds. Daggers need not concern themselves with Imp SS, and Aggression is really only marginally useful for the increased Evis damage.

A good combat dagger spec looks like this. A good Mutilate spec looks like this.

Best of luck. Make sure to set him straight!

Thanks for the tips guys. I will forward all this info on and try to help him out. The main reason I really wanted some info was that while he finished his attunement in BM, I came along to help with some of the other core group. I myself am a SV hunter, and only mediocre geared at best as we just really got a group together to start Kara. My spec is more or less an utility build that focuses more on helping out the group and keeping people trapped when possible (like Moros fight). At the end of the run, I was over 20% higher than him on the damage meters (and I personally hate dm, and don't use them). That alone threw up a red flag for me, and I knew that he would definately not help a group out in Kara, especially considering that I was on CC duty the majority of the time while in BM.

Thanks again,
V

Wtf? Dual daggers with a sword build? /boggle

Other than that, he's got a few really lousy pieces of gear, but he's not that bad. I've seen much worse.

1. More +Hit. He's fine for Kara, but tell him to be on the lookout for gear with +hit on it.
2. Chestpiece. That is awful for a Rogue. Assassination isn't too hard to get, and there are some other fun things for us in Mech (aside from the ludicrous AoE).
3. Bracers. Absolutely terrible. I didn't even use those when I was 60. There are several easy quest rewards that are MUCH better.
4. Trinket. Vendor that stupid tanking trinket.
5. Legs. x-52 Pilot's Leggings, easy quest in Netherstorm. Assassination will be a bit better, and Midnight is better still (heroic Slave Pens).
6. Helm. Helm of the Claw > Stealthers as long as you can afford to socket it properly.
7. Enchants. He has virtually none. They're cheap, and a very good way to boost your stats. Fiery is a good alternative to Mongoose or +7 damage. He needs all the AP/Agility enchants he can get. Drop that =8 stamina crap.
8. Shoulder/Head/Leg enchants. They're easy to get, he needs them. No excuses.
9. Gems. He has a lot of really bad PvE gems. We don't want any +Stam. Pretty much +Hit, +Crit and +AP exclusively. Others are decent too, but those give the most performance per slot. Agility gems are honestly not very good. If they were +10, I'd probably use them, but I like double the AP more than +.2% crit per gem.

Once he gets the above up to snuff, he should be in very good shape for Kara. If I had viable alternatives, I wouldn't take him until he had 100+ Hit rating and 1400+ AP. His crit is fine for being a fresh 70, and it's probably going to take a hit once he starts regearing.

Sounds good nooblestick. I forwarded your guys posts to him so I didn't ***** anything up and hopefully he doesn't take any offense to it. Truth is, he does need help and I cannot offer help to that which I do not know. Only advice I had to him was that he was lacking enchants on virtually everything and I knew that was a big hurt. I also don't think he's keyed for any heroics yet, but I will get with him and get some rep going. Mainly for gear ups though it will be Mech and SL if I understood that correctly? Thanks again for all the help guys.

Those are Knothide Armor kits. I use them on my own rogue, but mostly because I upgrade my gear so frequently, I rarely bother to pay for enchants.

When in doubt, take a look at the loot from various instances on Wowhead. Rogue gear is easy to spot; it'll have agility, stamina, +AP, +crit, and +hit, or some combination of the five. Any leather with increased armor, parry/dodge rating, or strength on it is feral druid gear.

Some instances to run for easy upgrades.

1. Mech. Edge of the Cosmos, Tunic of Assassination, Abacus of Violent Odds.
2. Shadow Labs. Leggings of Assassination, Blackout Truncheon, Cloak of the Inciter (I think he has that).
3. Steam Vaults. Some random chestpiece that isn't all that good, but he'll want the rep. Need at least one run-through to get HotC anyway.
4. Shattered Halls. Skyfire Hawk Bow (one of the best pre-raid ranged weapons for a rogue), some fist weapon thingy that's fun.
5. Helm Enchant: Cenarion Expedition - Revered. Not a hard grind, I did it in about a day from quests alone, I ran the CFR instances a lot so I was already honored.
6. Shoulder Enchant: Aldor - Honored. The Exalted one is better, but that's a huge time/money sink. Getting honored will take a couple hours at most, or maybe 50g.
7. Black Morass. Hourglass of the Unraveler, Latro's Shifting Sword (best offhand sword before BT if you exclude arena gear).
8. Heroic Badges. Once he gets keyed for stuff, he should run what he can to get badges. Mech is nice and easy, so is Steam Vaults. The Blood Knight's War Cloak is amazing, and won't be replaced until Shade of Aran (I've never seen that damned thing drop). Better than the cloak Prince drops, even. The epic helms are a waste, unless you're way down the list for T4.

AHables
1. Cloak of the Craft. My favorite blue cloak, generally cheap.
2. Pathfinder's Band. Great blue ring, also generally cheap.
3. Chestguard of the Dark Stalker. Beats everything until Assassination, might run 50g.
4. Blinkstrike. If he's loaded, picking one of these up is worth it. Probably the best BoE epic in the game. Puts out similar DPS with an arena offhand as a good Dagger build (about 15 sustained DPS lower than my Malch/Shiv combo with my gear).
5. The Master's Treads. Great boots, good to save for later PvP after being replaced.
6. Fel Leather Boots. Easily the best blue rogue boots in the game. The boot drops in kara are pretty rare (seen Edgewalker twice and never any Rapscallion's). Will last him a while, and they're crafted to boot. Only need LW for the set bonus.
