I tried to name my lion "Merlin" and the game won't let me. Why?
?? should be no reason you can't name him merlin. As there is no restriction on duplicate names unlike player names. though I suppose they have some kind of filter to filter out names like ***********. But merlin should be OK.

I tried to name my pet Mufasa (OOOH so original) and it wouldn't let me. Maybe it's a copyright thing?

I tried naming a red crab "Zoidberg" once and it just never let me. So I always assumed there was some copyright filter going on. Maybe there isn't one but it seems a strange coincidence that non-profanity names that are characters get rejected.

All names that the game has rejected for me in picking pets. (I ended up using an ì in that last one because it really suited my owl) Not really sure why it disallowed any of them really.

I think they simply add a name to the filter every time someone complains about it or every time someone is made to change it.
PooTang got rejected for me.. so i gave up the game, moved house and started having an affair with my ex girl friends mother...

I named my pet Shir'khan from the jungle book so it has nothing to do with copyrights or I wouldn't have been able to name him that and I saw another pet named simba, so I don't know why you would have a problem.
I have the white lion on one of my bank alts. I tried to name him Nova and the game would not let me. I also had the black lion and I was going for a space theme so I refused to let it go. So I ended up using a special character for his name. So I was able to name him Nova with a little carrot symbol over the “o.†I would never use such a thing for a character, but since my cat is unlikely to get tells or group invites all by himself, I figured it wouldn’t hurt anything. It’s been too long, so I don’t remember how I did it. But it solved my problem.
