Ok, I think I've finally figured the spell hit thing out, and why it's important for maximizing dps in raids. Just hoping one of you math whizzes or people that can research Wow game mechanics at work folks can confirm this for me.
As I understand it, your hit rating affects the chance of a mob to FULLY resist one of your spells. As far as I could tell from the wow website, spell HIT has nothing whatsoever to do with partial resists, but only with FULL resists. I've heard that the really hardcore raiding guilds insist that casters come to raids with their hit fully capped, at 16% or 164 hit rating for a mage with maxed elemental precision. So has someone figured out that having only 1% of your spells fully resisted means more dps than you'd get if you had the extra damage and crit you sacrifice to max out your hit rating?
I guess I usually don't even notice if my spells are being resisted during some of the boss fights, as I'm pretty focused on hitting all my trinkets and spell combos at just the right time.
Now, specifically, what I'm considering is sacrificing 24 crit and 50 damage for 63 hit which will give me a hit rating of 167 (couldn't figure out a way to juggle the figures to give me exactly 164). Just in case the spec matters, it's 10/48/3 standard raiding fire build and I'll still have 969 fire damage self buffed after trading out gems and glove enchant...and no spellfire set will be broken or anything like that.
Should I do this?
Oh, and since I don't think I have ever done anything on this site except ask questions, here, watch this:
