Warlock newbie requests adviceFollow

#1 Aug 22 2007 at 6:10 AM Rating: Decent
Hello all,

I haven't played WoW in several months (my first character being a Rogue which I got only to level 20). I decided to take a different route with my new character and decided to be a Warlock.

I've read through the FAQ and found the playstyle that seems more fun to me (Drain Hunting). I've followed the guide, and ended up with I think fairly decent results (i'm level 22).

I'd just like to ask for advice on which talents to go for next, and how my gear is, etc. I'd like to make sure i'm on the right path and don't make that many mistakes, and hopefully not look like an idiot who doesn't know what they're doing.

Any advice is appreciated. The rings i'm wearing are only because they're of course, 3 stamina, and the fact that I managed to pick them up from the Auction House for 5 silver and 25 silver respectively, and there were no other decent rings on there at the time. The Staff is just on for the sake of being on, as no other staves were on the auction house and this was a +4 Intelligence quest reward.

Thank you for your time.

Well, your gear is awful (as you admitted - and so is mine, so I'll leave that alone!).

As for talents, fair start. I'd go for Fel Intellect and Soul Siphon next if you're drain hunting.

But that's just me, and it's how I play too, without the draining.

Hahaha, fair play. My gear is terrible and I know it, but it's hard to pick up anything useful on the Auction House here (my gloves were selling for over 1 gold, thank god someone put them up for much less, and the body piece I wanted was sat at over 7). It's either lack of items my range to buy, or the price of those items is massively inflated. There are never any good staves. Ever. And any daggers/swords listed have stats that I have absolutely no need for.

Could I ask your opinion on what equipment I should be going for then, please? I'm trying to go for Stamina and Intelligence at this point, following the guide, but if there's something better, i'd like to know it. Don't mean to completely suck equipment-wise, hence why i'd like to learn all I can.

Stam and Int are the ones to go for.

Mainly Stam (I learnt on here recently) though as, thanks to Life Tap, Int isn't all that important.

As for individual items, just keep questing. You can upgrade quite well doing that during the early levels.

Correction - thinking about it, you want Stam and +SpellDmg / +SpellCrit. Int will help, but don't sacrifice these for it.

Alrighty, i'll give it a shot. I'm a quest nut anyway, so I spend ages doing them.

Sorry to trouble you further, but out of curiosity, could you tell me the pieces of gear I most need to work on, please. I'm looking at the Staff and maybe the rings first, as well as trying to fill my empty slots with equipment that has the stats I need. Thank you.

Shoulders and Staff shoudl be first priority. Chest next. Rings you'll get loads of as you quest, so don't worry too much about em.

Alrighty, thanks. I'll start working on those. Unfortunately don't see much stuff that I can use on this server (at least that's what i've noticed so far), but i'll keep my eye out.

Thank you for your help.

I have never one worried about gear as a Warlock. Since I do like to quest though, and like running instances, I usually picked up upgrades along the way. If you find something that's better than what you have, put it on, if not, don't worry about it. Every 5-10 levels or so, you may want to check the AH for upgrades, just check every spot and if you find an affordable upgrade, grab it. If not, do not worry about it.

Lock are not a super gear dependant class. Heck, for 20-25 levels or so, I wore a priest robe, with Int and mp/5 because I had not run across anything better. Alot of people laughed at me, until I was topping charts in BGs with crap gear.

Indeed. And as I said, my gear is awful really. Makes no difference when it comes to 5-mans or questing though.

Take a little bit more time in questing for rewards. Perhaps look up quests per zone on the internet and find out any drops that would suit you.

I havent bought a single piece for my lock, it's all from quests and instances. There are staff/dagger/offhands, you name it. The only thing i got besides that was a tailored piece of shadoweave.

For instance, Deadmines dropped a nice staff and wand usuable for a lock. SFK has some cloth stuff and seeying how your are 22, id say hit stocks (and SFK?). Then around 30/40 SM has some items for ya (hypnotic blade, etc)

Get cloth with +stam first and foremost. Add a bit of +int here and there. Don't bother with +shadow untill you are 40 at least and even then some consider it not needed yet.

Stay away from the AH from now on. It's a money sink and the items you are getting will be outdated way too quick.

Not sure if you like being demo, because of being demo. But if you like leveling i would suggest you put all points in one talent tree (affliction) at first.

5/5 imp corr., 2/2 soul siphon, 2/2 drain soul, 1/2 life tap, 5/5 fell concentration, 2/2 nightfall. That would be a nice start.

Good advise if you don't know how to make gold. Bad advise if you do. None of my toons have any problems having enough gold to get upgrades every 3-4 levels and still having enough to get a mount at L40, using their own gold. Here are things you can do to make gold (in order of profitability).
  1. *Disenchanting - buy cheap greens on the AH, sell the mats
  2. *Playing the Auction House - buy low and sell for reasonable. You'd be surprised at how many people put up stuff for prices well below the norm.
  3. Fishing - By Level 40, your skill should be 300 and you can be selling the money fish and farming the debris pools in Tanaris.
  4. Two Gathering Professions - There is little to no gold in crafting. Make it skinning + either Mining or Herbalism

    * requires DAILY (at least) trips to the AH, so hearth should be set to a major city. Also requires knowledge of the AH and how it functions. Not really recommended for a first toon

There is no reason why some of these cannot be combined. Fishing does not take up any major profession slots. Enchanting is only one profession, so the other slot is open to include a gathering profession. Playing the AH takes no profession slots whatsoever.

Try to set aside an hour of each play session devoted to making gold. If you can only play in 1-hour bursts, devote every third or fourth session to gold-making. It takes a bit of discipline, patience, and enduring occasional bouts of boredom, but you'll never be poor.

I also recommend affliction. the additional dots you get as you level (Siphon Life and Unstable Affliction) add to your drain hunting ability, and make Immolate almost unnecessary, which is good, because Immolate heightens the chance of pulling aggro from your pet.

Id have to say the same thing: Dont really worry about your equips too much.

Get Atlas loot addon or something similar, check wich instances you can run drop what, and do those instances. Thats if your really worried about your equipment.

Also id suggest like the others, to go afflic to start out (i leveled as destro and found it teious) the extra dots etc you get in afflic really helps.

Really, all you need to worry about is stam gears, later on, when + spell damage gear drops etc, then you want it.

Really your not going to get alot of +spl dmg stuff till 50+.

as for rings/necklaces, find a JC, usually they can make you something fairly cheap.

same with tailors.

Hope this helps.

Thank you all very much for your helpful advice and tips.

I have to ask though. I have two professions already: Enchanting and Tailoring. As with the above post by ohmikeghod, should I drop Tailoring for a gathering profession? The reason I took Tailoring in the first place was to disenchant the greens I made using Tailoring with materials I found in the field. Thank you for the Fishing and Auction House tips also, i'll go take that up.

And would you all recommend me dropping my 3/3 in Improved Voidwalker and 5/5 in Demonic Embrace for a full Affliction build? Or just go complete Affliction from now on, perhaps. I think I have just over a gold so I can go get my talent points reset.

And to be honest, I didn't know much about the add-ons. Can you grab them from a centralized place, maybe? I'll go attempt to find some.

Thank you for your time.

Considering you are a fairly new player. You have played before but only to level 20, i would suggest you pick 2 gathering skills or perhaps enchanting and a gathering skill. I have started my first character (a lock) with enchanting and tailoring, but the benefits of it will only come into play at a high level. You are better of getting professions that will net you gold, cause by the time you actually need tailoring (to wear gear) you will have enough gold to power level tailoring in no time.

I have not done this, but on every alt i have made so far i havent bothered with crafting profs, i take combinations of skinning (you will end up killing beasts everywhere so there is no need to go out of your way to get the skin), mining or even herb.

You can find the addons all over the web, just search in google 'wow mod' or 'wow addon'.

I would suggest you to go full affliction, you can still have your vw as a buffer while you take down a mob. See my previous post for talents to pick or search this forum for other 'i am a newb, need talent advice' posts.

good luck!
