Hey there,
I was wondering, I noticed that from watching some WoW-mage-gameplay-PvP-arena-movies (Mouthful, isn't it?) people are clicking their spells instead of pressing the hotkeys, or that's what it seems like.

Now I've always had the spells that I use most (frostbolt, Water Elemental, Fire blast etc.) on the hotkeys, such as Wand attack on '1', Frostbolt on '2', Fireball on '3' and so on and so forth, but when I need to use Cold Snap, or another spell that is not hotkeyed, I can't do it to save my life.

See, my hand position is as follows: (note that I am right-handed)
Left hand near '2' (Frostbolt) and W,A,S,D for movement (when not in combat, since I am usually too focused on pressing a button), and moving that same hand across the keyboard to press any other keys, Such as pressing '6' for Water Elemental
Right hand is on the arrow keys, for movement in combat, such as turning myself around when an opponent is trying to get behind me.

Am I approaching this wrong? Should I be totally focused on clicking and not hot-keying? What's your hand position(s)? Do I just suck?

Thanks in advance,
ExPerson

don't forget, you can combine keypresses like shift+2 or alt+2

imo your right hand should be on your mouse. left had works all the hotkeys/ movement (W/A/S/D, or T/F/G/H)

There is no right and wrong way to handle your character. Just try out different styles, and pick the one best suited for you.

G15 keyboard keys FTW.

I have 9 banks of 6 spells grouped by usage, and I daresay that noone could click faster than I can hit keys. The main reason is, I don't have to LOOK at my keys, and a clicker has to make sure they click the right spot.

I use my mouse to move most of the time, it's just easier and since I keep my cursor out in the field of view, I can pickup targets easy as well.

hmm, I absolutely suck at pvp. I think one reason is I use the mouse to move. It takes too long to click the icons. I've been in the habit of mouse movement since kotor and morrowind, don't think I can give that up. As for my left hand, it's hard to reach anything after 5. I usually end up hititng the wrong key.

one question though. an above post said alt 5 and ctrl 5. How do you do that/how does that work? I know ctrl controls the pet bar if you have a pet. But how does it work with no pet?

but pvp with my mage is hard, I don't know what to cast. I duelled a hunter 8 levels above me the other day. I was only hoping to do respectable damage. I got him down to 54%. I sheeped him and tried to use frost nova on pet, but pet resisted. I just tried to get some fireballs and fire blasts out. I didn't know what to do at that point.

Just get a n52. move with the mouse and hotkey your most used spells on your n52. I use it and love it. I click for pots, bandages, dispel, buffs, etc, but all of my firepower is right under my fingertips.

I usually alternate on how I play it depending on my situation. PvP....left hand always over 1 through =, pinky on tab, right hand on the arrow keys. Normal...usually the same, although there are times where I just use the mouse, usually when I'm just farming and not doing anything important.

Normaly against a mob my level (52) I rarely have to move thanks to Pyroblast and Fireball. They're dead by the time they get to me, so movement is not important.

I would suggest always keep your right hand on the mouse for better mobility. For me, I like to use the strafe buttons (Q and E) while holding down the right mouse button for easy turning.

If you have to, make quick glances down to your keyboard for those "out of reach" buttons like, 6 to the = sign.

With enough practice you can hit any key without looking. I use my left hand for all my hot keys. 1-= and i don't miss. I work out of town so i have to play on a laptop and it took some getting used to but now my hand flies across the keyboard. I can be strafeing and still hit the weird ones. On my home comp I have a wow keyboard so all my spells are hotkeyed together and I find I am about the same speed. Practice practice practice.
