ive never been prot in my life on live. i tried it once on test for ***** and giggles, and it was fun, but im not a tank. i like to pvp, specifically arena.

well, i got home from a weeklong jaunt to see family and friends in vegas, hopped on WoW, and my friends in the guild were doing a kara run for the hell of it. they hit prince, we needed a tank, so i volunteered to spec prot and give it a whirl.

the following two hours of prince attempts were riddled with some of the worst coincidental mishaps possibly ever witnessed by human eyes. very first attempt on prince i go running in to pull him, he aggros me....and freezes.

"um, i think we're lagging guys" - me
"no....YOU'RE lagging" - them

ouch. wipe #1. log back in, everyone gets rezzed and buffed and we try again. everything is going great until my RL mage friend DC's. we live about five minutes from each others house and share the same local ISP hub, so if he goes, im gonna go. sure as ****, i DC again. wipe #2.

ok, fine. rez up, buff up, go again. this time things are going a bit better, manage to get him to 65% or so when i notice that my revenge key gets "stuck", a sure indicator that im lagging. again, sure as ****, i DC.

ive never DC'ed so much in my life up to this point. even when the servers were fresh back in vanilla retail and there were lines to log in and worse. but it seems the two day "maintenance" blizzard had fubared my realm more than it helped it.

miraculously, im a better prot tank than i thought i was, and am able to hold hate right up until the point i log back on (thanks in part to my excessive lead in the threat game). soon as i get back on, i shield slam, it misses, and prince goes rampant, smiting three key people before i get him back on me.

bleh. wipe #3.

fine. rez up, buff up, blah blah....go for it again....charge him, pull him, everythings going great, get him to about 80%....and an infernal drops ON the healers. thats a tough one, but we barely manage to recover. i pop my HS to buy them some time to maneuver, but we're good to go. until the next infernal. which drops ON me. right before he enfeebles. instantly our three melee DPS die. i try to maneuver out of the way but we know we cant get thru phase 2 with 3 DPS down, so we wipe.

thats #4 -.-

rez up etc. etc., some of us have to run back cause of where we died which takes a bit more time and we go at it AGAIN. charge in, get a shield slam off, get him into position....and everyone lags. server wide lag (friend on vent was affected in shat and another in stormwind). everything comes back seconds later, just in time for the healers to react and start healing, but also just in time for the heals to be too late.

#5. blizzard can diaf.

so, again, some run back, rest rez up, we go for it once more, and everything is going superbly until at 55% i get a /t from some level 1 rogue asking me all kinds of crap about the server, its population, how is lag, what about raiding guilds. total ******** in other words. i can only assume this is someone specifically trying to **** with me, as they can see im in kara, and the timing was just TOO GOOD. naturally i ignore him...only to find that my ignore list is, regrettably, full. he starts firing away with more questions just as an infernal drops to my right. i maneuver left a bit to give our DPS room while the ranged shift position and a new infernal drops to our left. we're now in a small tight little ball trying to fight off phase 2 DPS while burning him asap.

long story short, we got crushed by some of the worst infernal placement ive had the displeasure of trying to navigate, wiping at 12%.

We have a huge problem with prince as well. The stupid infernals make me wanna strangle some programmers.

I can think of their spontaneous amphetamine induced delusions would sound like;

"I know what we'll do next, we'll put a boss in the instance that puts a debuff on half the raid; which will reduce their HP to 1. Next we'll have creatures fall from the sky randomly, that produce an AoE. Then we'll stick in one of the largest instances we've done in a while, with a very open visual range on a plateau. This will give graphic cards some hickups. Hmmm.. what else? Lets make it so the instance is SUPER laggy! Yeah. Hi fives all around!"

Doesn't /dnd prevent unwanted whispers?

Yup, dnd is a beautiful thing. As well as Deadly Boss mods, blocks all whispers when in battle and tells the people whispering you your status in the fight so far. How low the boss is, how many people you have alive, how long you've been fighting, etc. etc.

Quor I think this is the "gods" way of telling you not to tank lol.

For wipe #3, when you reconnect you drop all hate. You'd probably have been better served staying offline as long as you kept autoattacking. =p

We did a Chromaggus once with our maintank disconnecting at 70%, and he held aggro through the entire time. Thunderfury is fricking hax.

i did not know that about reconnecting. funny lol.

whats more funny is that on this last fight, in an effort to reduce the lag from the aforementioned visual plateau and spell effects, i turned deadly boss mods off. go figure. /dnd kinda helps, but you still see the whisper, so its only a band-aid procedure.

but yeah, ill be back to arms/fury once we get prince down. the life of a tank is just not for me it would seem.
