Mages and MP5/SpirtFollow

#1 Aug 14 2007 at 6:37 PM Rating: Decent
Hi all,

I have a level 55 mage and about to get started in Outland soon.

Think i'm going to go for 10/48/3 raid spec and Spellfire tailoring.

However... I've noticed I go oom pretty fast at my current level and I'm wondering if MP5 is worth considering for a mage.

My Spell rotation is pretty much:

Pyroblast, Fireball, Fireball, Fire Blast & Dragons Breath if needed.

Which with about 150+ fire damage and 15% crit this rotation generally kills mobs aprox. 3 mobs my own level before I go oom.

Also at present my kit has quite nice Spirit, nearly as much as my Int. Which means an Evocation will fill my mana up completely... but again ive noticed that the top DPS kit, Spellfire and Spellstrike for example is gimped on Spirit and this would affect my Evocation.

For most instances I doubt it'll be a problem as i can drink after each fight but having a 70 Warr main I know in some fights which are pretty long (like Curator in Kara for example) a lot of mana users have oom problems.

Questions are:

1) How much use is MP5 to a mage? i.e. Should I consider getting items with MP5 and gem'ing items with +MP5 gems?

2) Is Spirit worth having? Some blues like the Incanters Mage set have ok Spirit stats whereas much of the tailor crafted kit and Mana Etched has none.

Any advice appreciated - I am currently considering a DPS set and an MP5 set for longer fights but would love to know how experienced end-game mages deal with this.

MP/5 is crap for a mage, if you get it, it should be by accident because you are hunting for +dmg and crit gear.

Spirit is also useless in that you shouldn't judge a piece of gear by spirit. Again, if you get it, it should be by accident.

Hi, yes I appreciate that:

+spell crit
+spell damage
+spell hit (to 16%)

Are going to be my main priorities as a raid mage.

But how do you deal with longer fights and the oom issue? pop a mana pot every two mins? hope your guild shadow priests turned up to the raid for vampiric touch/embrace? ask you guild shammy to put down a mana stream totem? use MP5 regen potions or mana oil on weapon instead of +damage buffs?

All input appreciated :)

blessing of wisdom, mage armor, mana gems + mana pots + evocation. You shouldn't be in a fight that will last longer than those (from what I have seen).

And if you are, consider trying to convince your raid leader to put you with a shadow priest. I can go from needing 3 pots in a fight to not needing any when I have one.

Which is good, because it means I can pop destruction potions.

Hi, stacking spirit is no good. If some kind of mana regen for mages then.. only mp5sec. If you do not want to have mana issues.. spec. arcane to get arcane meditation and use mage armor in fights. For the regen you can use the imbued netherweave set. It has nice stats and good mana regen. Tested personally with arcane/fire specc 41/rest (pvp spec) When I put on mage armor and imbued netherweave set. I had about 240 mana regen out of combat and 135 in combat. The most efficient build would be arcane/frost.. arcane mediatation + frost channeling. I think that with this build you dont have to have any special gear at all. For evocation during fights.. allways keep a staff (or some other main+offhand combination) with spirit on it, switch weapons, hit evocation then switch back. I hope this helped too :)

Thanks for the input guys.

BoW should def help and i like the idea of macro'ing a high spirit weapon to help with evo.

As i said i doubt it will be an issue in 5 mans etc. its just the longer fights im thinking of.

Cheers.
