Question on Overall DPS (and some clarification on weapons).Follow

Okay, so I'm a moderately geared MM hunter... around 1900 RAP self buffed and 21% crit. I'm currently using Valanos' Longbow (around 66 DPS) and I'm looking to upgrade to either Wolf-Slayer's Sniper Rifle or Sunfury Bow of the Phoenix (both 79+ DPS).

My questions becomes this: If I'm making a 15 DPS increase (roughly 20% increase in weapon DPS), what impact will this have on my overall DPS. For example, will this be a 20% increase in damage output?

I guess this question crossed my mind last night when fighting Netherspite; the three hunters were at the top of the damage meter... a BM (using Sunfury and full epics) 1st, a BM (using Steelhawk and 1/2 epics) 2nd, and me about 10k behind the second. Now all questions about how I beat Spriests/locks aside (the locks were just doing drain-life in the blue beam and we didn't have a Spriest), if this would really be a 20% increase, it would have put me right about #1... but is this accurate?

Also, supposing I really like Wolf-Slayer's Sniper Rifle, and the Sunfury has a few DPS more... do you think it would be worth using Sunfury over the one I prefer for uber-DPS? Would I be gimping myself to use the Wolf-Slayer?

Anyway, thanks in advance for the replies!

Just using tooltip alone, your weapon has 66 DPS, and you want a weapon that's 79 DPS. 1900 RAP translates into 135.7 DPS, we'll round to 136 b/c you're probably not exactly at 1900, and it's easier to write with. Then you factor in the quiver, that's a 15% overall increase in tooltip DPS.

So you go from about 232 DPS to about 247 DPS, tooltip. That's only a 6.4% increase in damage. Also, unless you use aimed shot every time it's up, weapon damage won't drastically increase your special shots, it's RAP that does that. However, the extra 20 or so AP you get from the other bows (including the agility) will give you about 4 damage on arcane shots or 6 damage on steady-shots. Since you already factor in the 380 on arcane and 570 on steady at that point...it's not going to be a huge increase there. You also sacrifice roughly 0.05% crit chance by using the sniper rifle, and gain 0.05% crit chance by using the sunfury bow.

All in all, if you go with the upgrade, you will probably see an increase in roughly 3-4% of your DPS (guesstimate), not 20%.

If you really like the sniper rifle, I'd use it. But only if you really like it, and don't like the sniper rifle. You get roughly 4 more tooltip DPS, plus more agi and AP on the bow. It's only drawback is you would lose 0.3 DPS by equiping a 12-damage scope on the slower bow than the faster gun, but since you gain 4.2 DPS...it's not worth it. Plus, you get better stats all around on the bow. If you're a dwarf, though...may want to use the gun.

Awesome Skribs, thanks for the reply! :) That actually answered everything I had.

I'm a troll, so to make it even hairier... I get +5 to bows. I guess I'll try to get the rifle for PVE and messing around, but if I can get both (not many hunters in guild), I'll use the Sunfury for raiding and PVP.

Much appreciated, I didn't really understand the correlation between weapon DPS and tooltip DPS before.

On a side note, that 240 or so DPS # is not factoring my shots, etc... right? I could have sworn that I was over 300DPS in on the meters... but I guess that factors in potions, buffs, etc. Oh well, I'll keep plugging!
