Yesterday I was in Shattrath City and all of the sudden my pet ran away! I guess it was because I had left him unhappy for so long, because I wanted to conserve my pet food supply. Oh well, I didn't really like him that much anyway. :D

Not feeding your pet for a long period isn't going to conserve your food supply. When your pet is unhappy, you will have to feed it at least twice in order for it to be happy again.

If you need to conserve food, just put your pet in the stable (or dismiss him) while you are running around town. It's not that hard to do.
