This is my first mage and I always see people on the forums talking about taking on anywhere from 5-10 creeps at once during AoE grinding. I would like to know from the people that do this, what are your usual battles like, in terms of the spell sequence you normally use (and your build)?

I dunno if it works with today's current spells, since it was written awhile ago... but yeah.

The first link posted is good and that is the way it showld be done and is done by most people , however i know another way (i havent heard people talking about it , i think because it might be robbish but it does work for me anyway)
Unlike the normal aoe grinding it is not based on blizzard and you can still be pvp , single target shatter buld to utilize this , actually it might be better using the shatter build with couple of adjustements.
Anyway more to the point ...
The talents you need is shatter ,arctic reach, ice barier, imp Cone of cold , and other talents you want, but consentrating on frost dmg (piercing ice and the such)everything else is up to you (cold snap is always good)
All you do is , gather the mobs (no casters , snipers as always)(mounted or unmounted with ice barier on), use nova , take a few steps back (JUST A FEW it showld be far enough for them not to reach you but close enough to sue cone of cold) , use flamestrike (yes its a fire spell), then STRAIGHT AWAY use cone of cold , cone showld crit on most mobs and so showld flamestrike , then just use arcane explosion to finish them off(by the time you sue arcane they will eb so low only 2 or 3 will be needed but if no crits and out of luck might take lnoger)
I have sued that tactic as long as i can remember on my new mage (its only 42 but it works purfectly) im not a super mage ,and i have crap mana and hp for my lvl , i just stack up on +frost dmg (i got only like 170 at 42 but tis alright), my mana is around 2.9k-3k and my hp is only 900-1k i almsot never die, while aoe grinding , i developed this method cause i couldnt grasp the blizzard method and i wanted to be a good pvper (1 target or more , ey for shatter which causes crits in aoe as well ey)
This by the way can be used on the mobs your lvl and not jsut green ones that showld be sued in the blizzard aoe grinding method, and youl also be next to great pvp(for the pvpers out there)

Wouldn't it make more sense to nova -> flamestrike -> immediately cone of cold. I don't see how after using Cone of Cold (and hopefully critting,, which normally breaks nova) you can cast a 2.5(3?) second aoe cast assuming they are still frozen in place... then using cone of cold again (after its 7 second cooldown?) where it everyeone will be unfrozen by then.
I highly recommend using the blizzard method, it may take some time to practice, but I just find that it, overall, is easier and will probably lead to less deaths.

aoe grinding is fun. Be prepared to die a bit (or more than a bit) every new area has its own nuances and quirks.
The first meaningful area where you can do this is the farm in Hillbrad (Horde) or the farm in Arathi (alliance). You have to have a good idea of the lay of the land. The patrolling routes (which trust me will kill you once or twice) and other things like unlucky spawns.
Basic idea is to split the area into manageable pieces. You power up your shields and start the round up. Strafe and not run or you will get dazed and that will be a date with the spirit healer. CoC if you like it here, frost nova when they are tight lil ball of mob (I CoC to make sure that they pack in). Blink away and blizzard them. Aim with the far edge on the mob pack. This way they will be walking to you in the kill zone all the while. Frost nova also ensures that they will eat a few ticks standing still. By the time they are close, blizzard should have been almost done. A nice trick is to prepare a new blizzard target circle, when the first mob reaches the circle hit the 2nd blizzard, the mob will continue to take damage and give you time to get your cooldowns back. When they are in your face: CoC, kite again (strafe!!!) while waiting for frost nova to come back on. Frost nova again and if they are all near death CoC to finish. There might be a few that needs to be wanded down or AEed to death.
I had a lot of fun doing this to the pirates in Tanaris (mega fav spot). My mates kept telling me that this is undoable on a pvp server, which is true to a certain extent but frost mages are so hard to kill....

And its always a hoot to trap that rogue that just jumped you in the center of youre mobpack (blink towards mobs) with frostnova (coldsnap) and watch him die in 2 seconds :)

One thing puzzles me though. Once a group of mbs has been frozen with Frost Nova, the player then checks for any resistors, and casts Frost Nova again. He does this even at level 20. How does he get it to regen so quickly?

You can take the 'improved frost nova' talent that cuts the cooldown by 2 seconds. Later on (the next tier I believe) is coldsnap which refreshes alll frost cooldowns.
AoE can be done by both fire and frost, as I stress once again.
Fire goes a little something like this. Flamestrike a mob, then Frost Nova, then Flamestrike, then Arcane Exp. to finish. At level 30, you get Blast Wave. At level 41, you get Dragon's Breath. So now it's Flamestrike, Blast Wave, Dragon's Breath, FN, Blink out. Flamestrike again, at this time you now can burn a CoC, or else Arcane Explosion to finish. Don't forget Combustion.

As a level 70 i like doing things like stratholme and scholo solo as much as possible. I was before that a frost arcane mage with 10 points in arcane. Now im a elementalist...I use frost and fire spells and to be honest it is way easier to do with fire then with blizard. With use of blizard after one kite i was through my mana...Now with the elemental build i have almost half mana left after a big kite. Here is how i do it: Frost barrier, mount, collect, frost nova, flamestrike, Coc, blast wave and then arcane explosion till Coc is out of cooldown, Coc and then they are mostly dead...with the stun effect of fire and the fact that fire crits almost all the time they never get near me. That's the fastest way i can imagine. I kill faster then the other one can hurt me. Mage Style.
Once you have the blizzard thing down, you won't even take damage, it's fun, and very doable. I did it on a pvp server, and though tanaris is prettymuch a nightmare at crowded times, from 52 you can go western plaguelands, which is a lot emptier. The 40ish murloc grind is prettymuch safe aswell.

you must have the world's smallest mana pool toonly be able to use a single blizzard.
