hi everybody im new to world of warcraft and i was wondering what you think of mages in pvp, soloing, raids and instances

mages fit well into almost all situations, they offer good crowd control and damage. I don't think you can go wrong. I also understand that playing a shaman as a first character could be fairly difficult, mage, while not 'easy' can be a good class to learn with.

well if you don't want to die by getting hit you have to stay away from the guys. IT is a risk that you take for doing some of the most damage on the battlefield.

My main is a shaman, but I've recently started leveling a mage as my first alt. I'm only 36 atm, but here is what I've noticed:

Mages are a lot more versatile than shamans. While I love the skills of my shaman, I find that the CC abilities (sheep, freezing), and the range of magic schools makes the mage more adaptable to more situations. For instance, when my lightning bolts get properly interrupted, I can't cast any more nature-based spells for a couple seconds. When that happens to my mage's fire spells, I have frost and arcane spells that are just as helpful to my killing. (I know the shaman also has fire and frost spells, but they are very situational, and not nearly as useful).

As a shaman, if there were two linked mobs, I had to fight both on a pull, period. As a mage, I can sheep one, kill the other, then go back to the first. This is a good thing!

Shamans are a lot more gear-dependent than mages. I have found that the mages strength lies in the talent trees, and it augmented by the gear. The shaman's strength is only found when you gear properly for the spec you've chosen.

A mage's "squishiness" is offset by the fact that you can freeze stuff in place, slow it down with at least 2 different frost spells, or sheep extra mobs. If you don't want to, you really don't have to get hit very often. Add to that aoe's with some actual bite to them, and it's a pretty powerful class, despite the cloth armor.

Don't get me wrong...I love my shaman, despite the constant string of nerfs. I was grouped with an melee shaman last night (I'm Elemental...caster dps), and they have a mob debuff which boosts nature damage. I was critting for over 4200 regularly. But the mage is just so much more versatile. I would say it's also easier to play...and it really is...but there is just so much to it, that to play it WELL, you have to learn so many little things that it's not really all that much easier.

Eh. My two cents worth.
