Kara--what do i need for it?Follow

#1 Aug 01 2007 at 7:03 AM Rating: Decent
So, i just hit 70 on my priest, and i was wondering what sort of stats (like mana pool, +healing, +spell crit and Mp/5) are considered the minimum for healing in Karazan, and if are there any posted lists of gear that will help me obtain them?

Thanks,

Smuckles

In general 8000 health, 1000+ healing, 100 mp5 is considered minimum. As always more is better.

If your gear is mostly or entirely level 70 blues you're fine. Epic tailoring stuff is up there with loot from Kara itself, so that would be good to have. I don't think 8000 hp is necessary (at least not with your standard gear, though if you have a little stamina gear for special scenarios that's fine). The basic standard is "not more than a few greens". Try to get either some tailored epics, or rep epics, or perhaps just some BoE AH epics (Kamelei's Cerulean Skirt, IIRC, is up almost constantly on my server's AH).

I shy away from posting lists of minimums because different priests have different priorities; some pound +healing, others favor mana/5, and others stack spirit. Me, my +healing is a bit below what would be considered normal for my gear level, but I have 717 spirit when raid buffed. So if it were me I would look more at the general quality of your gear than specific statistical values.

8000 unbuffed HP? I think that is a bit overstated especially considering most priests use the PMC set which has no +stam. I have about half and half of rares/epics and I have 5.2k unbuffed.

What you'll want for the early fights is about +1k unbuffed healing. You should be at about +1.2 with raid buffs (ImpDS, Golden Fishsticks, Elixir of Healing Power)

Mana pool is semi important but not as much as you may think. My unbuffed mana is 8.2k.

So if your mana pool is not important what is? Mp5. Because in long fights (which most the kara boss fights are) Mp5 will take precedence over mana pool. I guess around 100 is a good starting number, I'm at 130 inside mp5 right now.

As for gear? If you are tailoring make the PMC set, and then fill the rest out with the Hallowed Set or whatever good healing blues you can pick up.

Also make sure you have plenty of mana potions and don't be shy to chain pot on boss fights.

Finally, make sure you are using some sort of heal assisting mods/addons. Pre-kara you can heal just about all the instances without any help but once you get to kara you'll probably be overwhelmed during some of the boss fights if you don't have a healing mod. I know in my earlier noobish guild we raided kara and none of the healers had any assisting mods, we couldn't even get past maiden because none of us could dispel her holy fire fast enough. Kind of funny now looking back on it because maiden is such an easy boss.

I would agree with Mookus. I have 2/3 PMC(primal mooncloth set) and a spattering of blues and greens. my unbuffed Hp is 5.6k and mana in just over 8k, I expect my Hp to drop a little once I get my better blues for healing and my mana should stay about the same.

I am currently trying to get a list of pre heroics/kara healing gear together and have it broken up in to what piece is best for +heal, MP5, Spirit, Stam and sockets. I hope to have it up by tommorow for people to rip it apart so I can put it back together and maybe have Agoge include it in his Priest FAQ, if he even wants a gear list in there, as I find alot of people ask what gear is out there/they should have for kara.

Cheers

Edit: I should include that I have about 60 mp5 (need lots more) and +1060 heals unbuffed/unenchanted.

Actually, if you do all quests from netherstorm/shadowmoon, get a few blues from instances, you should get to about 6k life, 8-9k mana, 1100-1300 healing and 100+ mp5. But I'm an enchanter also, so every piece of gear was enchanted :)

So look out for those that level enchanting. They might offer some very good deals.

I agree with everything else in your post, I just want to note that Aran is pretty much impossible to do unless everyone in the raid has ~8000 HP raid buffed. His Sheep/Drink/AOE Pyro makes that fight essentially a "gear check" to progress through Kara. If you're sporting less than, oh, 6.4k health unbuffed, work on it, because a stam buff will get you to 7.4-ish and then GotW should get you pretty close to 8k. And no sane priest will want to use a Spicy Crawdad in that fight.

Well, if you do Shade well he shouldn't even get to Poly the raid.

But yeah I see your point.

IVe been running around with 5.5k unbuffed in Kara for a while, on shade i took a buzzard meat thing (+20, +20 spi) and shielded myself when Shade run oom, havent died a single time.
Now i even have less then 6.5k while im halfway geared up, and i dont die before wipes.

I also have a bucketload of spirit, it seems to come with the gear, i always though spirit was a "bad" stat but i turned out to love it, theres always enough moments in a bossfight where you get those 2 ticks out of the 5 second rule. (renew tank, then load/cancel heals, only land when its necessary)

When i started out Kara i had almost the whole hallowed set, hallowed set is very nice btw, all pieces, although the set bonusses are to be ignored.

So for me it was 5.5k hp about 8-k mana, 100+mp5, 1000 healing.
Dont stare youreself silly on the primal mooncloth set, it isnt necesary for Kara, although it is nice.

A quick gear list, all attainable in normal 5-man instance runs and very economical :) :

Hallowed chest/pants/head/shoulders
Jeweled Boots of Sanctification
Prismatic mittens of mending
Lifeblood Belt (crafted)
Light Scribe Bands (wrists)

Sethekk Oracle's Focus (neck, quested)
Keeper's Ring of Piety (ring, quested)
Ancestral Band (ring, thrallmar revered)
Serpentcrest Life-Staff (weapon 2h)
trinkets, 2x Lower City Prayerbook

The Lower City Prayer Book is nice... but the Bangle of Endless Blessings is one of my favorite priestly trinkets. The darn thing procs off of EVERYTHING, is up constantly, stacks with Meditation, and has a nice on-use with many applications. Plus, it scales infinitely: the better your gear gets, the more spirit you get, the more regen the Bangle is worth. I'll be using the bangle for a very long time.

Run Botanica and get yourself a Bangle. You won't be disappointed.

A nifty fact about the Lower City Prayerbook is that it is NOT unique meaning you can purchase and equip 2 of them. They would share the same 1 minute CD so you couldn't use both at the same time to save 44mana on each spell cast but you would have the constant +140 healing.

Got the Shard of the Virtuous (..? not sure about spelling lol) yesterday of my very first Kara run (!)*, before that I used Essence Focuser (+30 int enchanted too).

I did okay in Kara. As you see I'm still using some really sh*tty items (the necklace... nice mp5 on it tho, the gloves.. nice spirit tho :P the boots... simply sh*tty >.<.. heroic mech won't drop me my boots)

Also you'll notice im an enchanter.. If my mp5 wasnt high enough i could just have used a manaoil too (i didnt, but its easy for me to make).

Without the PMC set I guess you would have to replace the gloves and boots (maybe necklace too) with upgrades first before entering Kara, but I doubt it would make a big difference :)

Also expecting 8k UNBUFFED (omgwtf..) hp of a priest that has never set a foot into Kara (and isnt using arena stuff..) isnt realistic.

* It was the very first Kara one if the new guild I'm in (Armory hasnt updated yet I think - the guild is called SYRIL) and we got up to Maiden, sadly someone had to go after that, but tonight we're trying to get further ;O Wish us luck.

Health really isn't that important. Helpful, but not necessary. There's a priest in my guild who's sitting at 4.9k unbuffed, and with a lock (which is pretty much required for Shade anywho, in my experience) he doesn't have problems.

I would say +1.2k healing, 120mp5 while casting and around 250mp5 out of casting is a good pre-raiding goal. It's definitely possible with less though - there's a couple healers in my guild that we geared up with Kara gear, and they started more around +800healing and 80mp5. The other healers have to pick up a bit more, but since they're also a lot more geared, it doesn't matter too much.
