I plan on making an alt hunter, and power-leveling him for fun solo play when I'm not doing stuff with other people on my main. And the question arose, which talent tree would best situate power leveling. I've heard both arguements that upping the pet damage vs. upping my damage, is better. So I thought I'd ask the experts. Thanks ahead of time for any advice/input.

I've done MM, and I've done BM. Based on my experiences, I'd say with MM I tended to take aggro from the pet fairly regularly, and had to spend time shedding it or slowing the target, getting back in range and letting the pet tank again. It's not bad per se, but it's time wasted that could have been adding to DPS if the pet never lost aggro.

With BM, I find that the pet rarely loses hate unless I do a series of crits in a row (which does happen on occasion). It's easier for me to shed hate in BM- usually a single Disengage, followed by getting back into range and a Gore from my pet to reseal hate does the trick. I rarely have to feign death (I prefer having that up for real emergencies).

If I could go back and do it over, I'd most certainly have specced BM from the start.

BM huh? I do remember playing a hunter back in the day, and getting that aggro off was annoying. Ok, so lets play on this BM idea. What talents are a must and which are good to avoid. I will be on a PvP server, if that changes anything.

It does, but only slightly. This is the BM tree I would use, you can build it up from there. Beastial Swiftness is not needed, but the rest on there, are. I would definitely avoid Spirit Bond, Imp Aspect of the Monkey, and until you get Kill Command the Focused-Fire doesn't help much. Pathfinding is of limited use, I wouldnt reccomend it, and Imp Aspect of the Hawk should be gotten as filler later.

the only thing i would change is getting points into animal handler from bestial swiftness and frenzy.
Because 4/5 frenzy is enough to get consistent frenzy's and if your pet doesnt hit it also wont crit ;)

the +8% mounted speed is a nice little bonus.

Indeed, but not worth a talentpoint if you ask me :). Further more it does not stack with other + mounted speed thingies ^^

A few comments about the above build:

1) Zero points in Ferocious Inspiration?
2) Improved Mend Pet is very good. Especially if you are grinding as a BM hunter. The mana savings alone will keep you going without down time for a good while.
3) Catlike Reflexes seems a waste of talent points IMHO. Bestial Swiftness isn't much to look at but for that straggling point, I prefer it here because there are times when your pet's Dash/Charge/Dive is on cooldown --- or your pet might not even have that type of ability *gasp*

I've always preferred the following 41 points into BM:

For solo play CR makes a big difference. That's a 9% reduction in damage taken for your pet (in comparison with all the other tank class talents, which get a 5% reduction after 5 talent points).

only talent spec you'll ever need.

I used to go MM, but I like BM now for leveling.

A strong pet is incredibly useful - allows you to take on more at once - you don't have to run from as many fights.

If you can kill several things at once w/, say, a carrion bird (screech helps a lot, it's an AoE debuff/attack that seems to generated extra agro on the bird - and a c.b. is "medium" w/ claw and bite (and dash) - a really strong pet) - you can rack up some good exp.

But other pets, like a boar, can do this, too - you just can't multishoot. You sic the boar, let the cluster of mobs get mad at him before you start shooting - or manually change him to new targets - and shoot the one he's agroing the most. Slap a heal on him - trap a third mob that might go after you for healing him, etc.

The c.b. is better at fighting multiple targets.

If the c.b. has landed two or more screeches, you can multishoot or mend pet - and the c.b often keeps agro. At least that's been my experience.

Animal Handler gives +2/4% chance to hit to your pet.
