Holy Spec Priest..surviving PvP? Impossible? How to kill?Follow

#1 Jul 31 2007 at 12:09 PM Rating: Decent
Hi Guys,

I have a level 45 Holy spec Priest on the WoW Europe, Dentary realm.

I only have 5 points in shadow and that is for spirit tap...I find it helps alot when soloing, the remainder of my talents all lie in Holy.

First off....I know alot of you guys are going to say "Go Shadow spec", however I am really enjoying my holy spec priest, and relish in doing instance, knowing full well, that when I do a good job..our party stays alive. I have mastered to art of keeping aggro off me 90% of the time and keep the group healthy at the same time.

I love the difficult challenge of soloing vs mob, and am successful in taking on 3 same level mob or higher simultaneously and coming out tops..with a bit of mana and life to spare

The purpose of the above is not to blow my trumpet...but just to tell u that I am well versed in my Priest, this leads on to my call for HELP!!

PvP...Battlegrounds...duels...everything falls to pieces. Make no mistake I can kill in one vs one random encounters, however the opponent must usually be a few levels below me or if same level...then usually if he is already engaged with mob or if I can fear him into mob...then I can take the battle.

However most encounters proceed as follows:

My bubble is down within 1 to 3 shots, literally 2-3 secs, then the damage gets dealt, ok...to get a good heal off takes a good 3-6 secs, with being interrupted... thats if I even get a heal off before dying, right so u say using fear...yes I do...it lasts 8 secs IF U LUCKY...so u get a heal off, maybe get time to get a shield up again(u most certain dont want to smite him, since your fear will then drop)...hes back on you...shield down in 2 to 3 secs, u dead!!!

Forget about mana drain...u know how long that takes to hit!!! U dead before u get one mana drain off guaranteed. Mind control is completely useless...if you mind control him to attack mob..once MC drops u have him and mob on u!!!

The only damage u can effective deal is Word Pain..even wanding is suicide!!! U every notice how wanding messes your spell casting up!!!If u start wanding ..timing it correct to get in any spell takes quite a few secs. Devouring plague is utterly useless...I have never managed to use it to any great effect in PvP.

Warriors, Paladins, Rogues, Shamans, Druids..have u down within secs...Hunters..if they know how to keep distance between u and himself...u dead..ever notice how slow a priest runs??? U can never get in range..all the while u receive damage from pet and a body full of arrows..so the Hunter takes a few secs more to take u down...but u going down. Warlocks & Priests...yes..here u can maybe get a kill..maybe, all depends who gets the quickest buttons mashed.

So my question to you:

Is it possible for a Holy spec Priest to kill PvP and if so ..PPPLLLLEEEEASSSEE tell me how...what combinations can I use..plz just not the bubble and dot...it dont work...maybe for 3 secs at best.

Thanks for reading through my essay..thanking u in advance for your kind assistance.

Greetings
Gilead

As to your problem, I have no clue. What I want to know is how the hell you kill a lock as a priest. If you rate locks lowest(besides priests) on what kills you faster, I want to know your secret. I find locks are my archnemisis
#3 Jul 31 2007 at 3:12 PM Rating: Decent
Well to be honest...Lock encounters are few and far between...so for me to say...I own locks is a lie, really dont come across many at all. I find the Priest and Locks drop quicker due to lower stamina, but as I mentioned only if I fire off enough damage as quickly and effectively as possible.

You mentioned "my problem", can I assume u dont encounter similar problems or are u owning all classes left right and centre in with your Priest in PvP?

How do u find your Priest fares in PvP? :)

Look around for some good smiting builds. As for the whole holy thing, do whatever you like. You are playing the game that you are paying for but also take some advice along the way.

Oh btw, to answer this is simple, heal a warrior.

Well you chose the healing tree so don't expect to win a lot of 1 v 1. Like Agoge said, a smiting build is about you're only shot at winning duels.

TBH, with a Holy build you are not meant to kill in PvP, you should be healing just like in an instance.
In world PvP that is obviously not so easy, but in BG's wither try to find a warrior/shaman/druid to join up with or find one in the BG and cut a deal, you heal them, they protect you.

Locks have lower stamina? Are we playing the same game?

Thanx guys..the advice is appreciated.

You are all correct..especially Agoge

Yes I spec holy because I love to heal.

And you have answered my question...in sole PvP...I cannot expect to own..and perhaps rightly so.

In instances..I am used to my warrior and usually rogue guarding me all the way...yet in the BG's ...the ones I have gone into..everybody seems to go their own way. Never thought of actually chatting to the warrior prior to the start and arranging a relationship on the BG...very good idea.

What usually happens is as they spawn they run out..but never as a team.

In solo PvP...I will then pick my battles very carefully in future.

Thanks again

Holy Priests win pvp kind of like paladins do: Make it a long and drawn out fight. The diff is they keep close to the opponent and we stay away.

Apply sw:pain, shield, renew, kite, kite, kite, pause for flash heals, kite, kite, kite, scream, big heal, repeat.

Surge of Light and 5/5 Holy Specialization if you want to Smite. Wait for it to proc off a flash heal.

Vs. Warrior:
Notice how they run through you when you try to cast on them? LoS error, cast was a total waste... Do the same if they hamstring you. No weapon dmg if they're facing the wrong direction.

Vs. Paladin:
Paladins need to be within 10 yards to do damage (I actually had to roll an alt to discover how frustrating this is for them). Keep the gap and watch your regen (this fight is probably the longest... mana burn. their regen < your regen).

Vs. Rogue:
If a rogue jumps you, you are suppose to loose. If you attack him first, then you can win - Rank 1 holy nova when he vanishes.

Vs. Warlock:

Dispel Magic and Renew. A friend of mine (who plays a 70 warlock) brought to my attention that the time and mana required to re-apply the DoTs makes fighting priests one of the most annoying. Trinket out of the fear or move out of line of sight or range to avoid chain fearing. Use your scream and cast a big heal. Mana burn between rounds of "he Dots-You dispel", otherwise he'll Drain Mana you and take the fight.

Gilead...
I have the same problems in pvp, as I am shadow but I suck at pvp, so they balance each other out to a so so pvp experience with lots of deaths :P

Ixidoria...
Thanks for the advice, I find that I can kill most of the other classes with equal unease, but the locks I have always found kill me in about 10 secs, but that strat sounds like it would work nicely, I will try it next bg I go into....so hopefully never, unless some of the rewards tempt me.

I agree with the poster above, you have a couple jobs in PvP, I personally run my 45 Holy priest mostly in Arathi Basin, but i'll occasionally venture into WSG.

One: Heal
You should be where the battle is, in my opinion a priest is almost worthless on guard duty. Any one on one or two on one encounters are most likely going to end up with you dead. Remember, any healing you do helps you aquire HKs and helps your team win. I suggest getting the HealBot addon as it helps you keep track of who's near you, but it won't replace the need for you to know who is causing damage and needs the heal, and who is getting slaughtered and is just a waste of your mana. Even the best player in the world is beyond your saving if he's got four 49s on him and hes a 40.

Two: Stay out of the way until you should be in the way.
Since you can't dump aggro like you can with NPCs you should be scouting locations that give you LoS to your target without being too obvious. When (and trust me, as soon as they figure you out you will) get killed your job is to get in a good spot before you die. There's nothing that annoys me worse than seeing a SoR in a corner of the BG because the priest tried to save himself. Suicide in close to the battle and fire of a couple of big heals then spam Renew.

Three: Buff
Always be buffing, everyone can use some extra stamina in the BG, not just tank classes.

Four: Find the flag
You should now have Rank 2 MV. In WSG when the flag is picked up by someone you should /tar [Username] them immediately and alert everyone to where they are. Even if they arent hiding and are running in the open field it helps your team both figure out where they are going as well as where to defend. Personally I like to throw out a couple of DoT on the flag carrier too.

Five: Dispel Magic and Fear
Nothing annoys allys more than having a priest ride a mount into the middle of em and fear 4 of them, buy your team some time at the flag.

I have a 45 holy spec priest myself and I'm gearing up for the 49 bracket. I've stopped at 19, 29 and 39 along the way, so I've had some experience with pvp and a holy build.

http://www.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Undermine&n=Friarduck (on Undermine)

Basically, another poster above has it correct. Keep renew ticking on yourself and SW: Pain ticking on them. When you do get off a psychic scream, use that time either to heal yourself or toss a smite at them. You'll want to remember the 5 second cast rule too. If you just blow through all of your mana your going to die. A priest without mana is dead. Wands and bandages cost no mana.

If you're a dwarf, like me, then you have chastise (0.5 second cast stun that can interrupt spell casting) and desperate prayer. Use them! All you need to do is make the battle last and you'll grind them down with SW: Pain. If you do have surge of light (and hopefully about a 10% crit chance from holy spec) then fire off a couple of smites.

Having a ton of +healing gear will help you as well. I'm built out with about +240 spell damage gear (healing gear gives 1/3 +spell damage now) and my smites hit for 450 and crit for 625 or so. If they do crit and proc surge of light, that's over 1000 damage in 2 seconds (with the improved smite cast time talent). Most enemies that I come across aren't expecting smite to hit so hard. With all of that +dmg gear, my SP: Pain does over 750 damage (it ticks at around 125).

Some other things that you can do in the battlegrounds is to make sure that you use everything that you can get your hands on. Wizard oil gives +24 spell damage and healing, buy up scrolls and rum from the AH. Level cooking so you can get the +12 stamina/spirit buff from being well fed. Then use dispel magic to deny your opponent his buffs.
