Just a quick question about the way a pet gains xp: Will a pet gain xp off of a mob that is within the appropriate lvl range for the pet, even if the player is too high to gain xp off the mob?

Example: I am currently lvl 29. If I were to tame a lvl 20 pet, would it gain xp off of lvl 20 mobs even though I don't?

Yes.

How else do you level that Pink bird from Mulgore

Everything I've read has said that your pet doesn't get xp unless you do. That means if you tame a very low level pet relative to your level, you have to either basically solo things without your pet's assistance or get someone to tank fights for you.

Pheared, I don't even know what pink bird you're talking about.

Aurelius, thank you for your input.

Another quick question: Is it true that by taming different creature types, it is possible to learn new pet abilities that you cannot get at a pet trainer?

Yes. You can see what abilities a certain beast will have by casting beast lore on it. The only abilities you will get at a pet trainer are growl, great stamina, natural armor, and all of the magic resistances. So if you tame a level 10 cat, for instance, it will have low ranks of claw and bite (rank 1, probably). If you keep that same pet up to 70, it will still have those same low ranks of those abilities. You need to tame higher level cats (or other beasts) to learn the newer ranks of those abilities, and then teach them to your main pet.

For everything you could possibly want to know about pets, go here.

Oh yeah, and the pink bird he's talking about is in Mulgore. Here is a picture someone put up of the tamed (I think) version of the bird.
