Questing for 490 Defense - Obtained!Follow

Per my understanding, in this thread, 332 defense rating is needed in order to hit the 490 defense mark to be uncrittable by a boss. Doing nothing more than quests in outlands as well as putting gems in sockets this can be accomplished. No instances need be run at all. Please note that much better gear can be obtained through instances as well as crafting and the auction house. This is just a list of items from quests. Please note that at least one of these quests is done in Hellfire Peninsula so waiting until you hit 70 won't work as well if you have chosen a different reward from the quest.

Blue : Enduring Deep Peridot - 4 Sta, 3 Def rating
Yellow : Enduring Deep Peridot - 4 Sta, 3 Def rating

Some of the pieces that are much and obtained through quests in/from instances and the auction are as follows:
Mark of the Ravenguard
Sha'tari Wrought Armguards
Kaylaan's Spaulders(Aldor only)
Sha'tari Vindicator's Waistguard

A few pieces off the Auction House that are crafted:
Felsteel Gloves
Felsteel Helm
Felsteel Leggings

Edit - Added the Felsteel stuff.

Thanks for this, great info. All right there for me to clicky for when I get to 70 and now I will not have to worry about being undergeared for my guild from lack of instance drops. This is going to be a great resource for me when I am of the appropriate level.

Your sticky thread is good but it seems more information to get ready for Karazhan and onward than starting out. This thread is just a simple list of equipment that can be quested to get you ready to enter instances. None of the equipment comes from a random drop mob or requires you to enter an instance.

your best bet is to look at Xordan's sticky, it has a pretty good guideline as to what you need. If you are going for decent tank shoulders, Warchief's Mantle and bold should do nicely until you get some purples or fanblade from heroic crypts.

Very nice !!!

Xordon's thread is good too. I looked at that thread and then went out to get my gear dps/pvp gear lol. I only have like 1/3 of the "recommended" items ><

Your best bet is to try reading the OP.

I've killed Murmur 20+ times attempting to get the tailoring pattern on my Warlock and Priest and haven't seen the shoulders drop. Should a tank be wearing nothing until they happen to fall upon a random drop like this? I think not. My list is for that person.

Warchief's Mantle comes after you have run Durnholde and Shoulderguards of the Bold are a random drop off Murmur, who is also in an instance.

My drop list is 100% drop from quests that can be done without running a single instance. I asked on Xordon's thread:

One thing I would add to the guide is a quested item for each slot. That way no matter if you are a new 70, old 70, great drop rates or not everyone can have a baseline for gear that can be obtained easy and with a 100% success rate.

It wasn't done so I made this list.

This list isn't made to get you ready to run heroics.

This list isn't going to get you ready to run Karazhan.

This list isn't going to get you ready to PVP.

This list isn't going to make you the best tank in the world.

This list is meant to get you ready to enter level 70 instances.

I honestly made this list because I'm leveling a warrior to become a tank and part of that is because I've seen entirely too many tanks that only wear half a set of tanking gear with the excuse that the drop rates on things haven't gone their way. Everything on my list is a 100% drop rate and requires you to never step foot into an instance. There are some elite quests and group quests in the mix but that could not be avoided. If you can't manage to get a group all the way from 60-70 to do a group quest then your odds of getting an instance quest don't really matter either.

When you group with a warrior that has 9k armor, 420 defense rating and complains about there not being any good gear for warrior tanks while questing you can point them at this thread. I have no intention of being that warrior.

Thanks for the list. I only get to go to 1 or 2 instances a week and was dreading walking into the 70 instances with crappy gear. This quested list has helped me incredibly. I still need to get several items but my def skill went from low 300's to 454 in a week.

Thank you, thank you and thank you.

I got my Warrior (63 now) out of retirement for tanking purposes. I was looking for that info. Good work.

nice gear list to have, but there are some problems with this approach.

no. 490 defense is not a requirement until you fight raid bosses (level 73). normal bosses are only 72, which requires 485 defense IF you want to be uncrittable. however, getting crit in a normal instance is a mere annoyance, not a wipe. i was probably around 420 defense when i dinged 70, and i was not having undue difficulties tanking these instances. don't worry about 485 defense until you start heroics.

getting your tank geared up WITHOUT running a single instance will not make for a good tank. tanking is difficult and is all about practice. skill >>>>> gear.

there are good gear lists already that don't require drop rates - as has been pointed out, the warchief's mantle is a 100% guaranteed reward, and you should most definitely run durn while leveling. that's not even a level 70 instance. the best shield you will get is simple - just get 20 EOTS marks and 15k honor. it is far, far better than the one you listed and even lowers your required defense significantly. in fact, the S2 shoulders are much better than anything else you will get pre-raid as well. KoT pants are also guaranteed and soo easy to get.

for gems, i would just stick with +9 stam for your early gear until you have stuff you're going to keep. then start putting +12 in them. this is good 90% of the time; it's very rare that a socket bonus is worth getting.

if you really want to be a good tank, spec protection when you hit 60 and tank EVERYTHING you can while leveling. as an added bonus, you will now be familiar with all the instances when you come back to do them in heroic mode. you'll get some very good gear that way, and you can use this and other lists to supplement that. pick up your BG marks before 70 (much easier in the lower bracket), then just do some AV for the honor. with this approach, you should have a good 11k-12k hp/armor by the time you hit 70 without even trying. then you can get your defense up and start tanking heroics.

do not wait until you hit level 70 AND have 490 defense to start your tanking career. you will suck.

In no where in the OP's post did he say to not run instances to get gear.
The OP even stated that if you want better gear to run the instances in outlands.
So there is no problem with the OP approach.
The purpose of this thread was to point out specific items that could be obtained only through quests, and no other means.
With this, you are geared well enough to run heroics for better drops.

That info from OP is great because i did tank Furnace and Rampart 4 times each so far and.....no drop for me. Soooo it's nice to have this info as a substitution. Hope to have better luck in Coilfang.

Wow, necro from a while ago too.

This is a great list of easily attainable gear that is specifically oriented towards tanking. 490 defense means your crit proof for wow in pve terms.

Of course this is just a list to get 490. If your having problems holding threat from being not hit/critted, you can always replace some with dps gear instead. Or, like I like to do, take off your pants.

i'm not trying to discount the work he did in putting this list together. it's a decent list, but the OP specifically wouldn't consider items that you get from quests (100% guaranteed) because they required running an instance. some of the quest chains mentioned in this list are much harder to find a group for than doing instances. i didn't finish the quest for grom'tor's charge until after i had run more than 10 heroics.

he also made some mistakes and gave some very questionable advice about tanking, when the OP doesn't have a tank. those are worth correcting, so up and coming tanks are not misled. for instance:

*what is the defense cap and the purpose of getting to the defense cap? 490 is ONLY for raids, not 5-mans. even 485 is not a goal to shoot for to run normal level 70 instances. it's something you should have to run heroics. new tanks reading this might be apprehensive to tank, thinking they need to get to 490 first.

*NEVER put a +str gem in your tanking gear.

*that shield is not worth getting - the S2 shield is 1000 times better.

*he doesn't mention resilience and how it interacts with defense. of course, resilience is not something to focus on, but it DOES help you become uncrittable.

i realize drops can suck, but getting "prepared" for level 70 instances isn't this complicated. first, get at least 11k hp/armor. second, become level 70. third, go run level 70 instances. if you tank your way from 60 to 70, you will get there by accident.

then you can focus on rounding out your gear to get you ready for heroics.

No he didn't. He said you can quest to get the necessary gear.
Not "you should avoid instances with all your might without learning to tank to get gear"
What you "can do" and what you "should do" are two different things.

Yea, I know the OP didn't say this is for heroics run because I was the one who said it and you implied it too.

arghhh.

the OP said he made a list of gear to get you to 490 defense to get you ready to run level 70 instances on regular; you can't dispute that was his intention. i think the author had good intentions, but little experience.

my point in responding was that this is NOT a goal to shoot for. he also had some poor advice on gem selection, so i pointed that out as well. with this list, you might get 490 defense, but you're going to have about 10k health / 9k armor which is not very good. you are much better off trading some of that defense for more EH.

if you want to get geared for heroics/kara, then there are better lists of gear elsewhere. this one won't cut it. so it's not a great list for normal mode and it's not a great list for heroic mode. look at the lists put together by people who have actually been through this, and have learned from it.

i'm done arguing about this; if you don't get it, you don't get it.

If you replace the def gems with sta gems you won't reach 490 def, this is an awesome list for someone like me who doesnt have time to run 2-3 hour instances for a drop that might not drop. Trying to pick apart someones post because you think you have the answer, and not giving constructive critism to help better the post, is a fail on your part. Yes, 12sta is better than 4sta/3def, but... 2-3g gem > 40g gem for starter tank greens.
