There are several ways to do it. However you do it, you need good mouse control (If you've played a lot of first-person shooter games this should be easy, if you haven't it might take a while to get). If you can't jump-shot, ask how to strafe-kite. I can't do it all that well, but some other people can. Okay, so for the 3 methods of jump-shot...

1) (What I use), click and hold both LMB and RMB, this will allow you to run and control where you are running. When you jump, move the mouse until you turn at least 90 degrees (so the target is in the 180 degree radius in front of you) and use an instant shot. Then either finish the spin, or spin back.
2) Auto-run or run with the W button, and only hold the RMB when you are turning/jumping. Then jump, hold RMB, and turn like mentioned above.
3) (Quicker Jump-shot, less control variant) Have auto-run on and hold LMB to look behind you. Keep holding LMB while you hit jump + RMB and you will instantly turn around, allowing you to fire and spin back to run forward again.

It should also be noted that it's best to have the shots you use while jump-shotting on an action bar you can use a hotkey for. Since your mouse is used to move, you need to use the keyboard to shoot. If, while running with the mouse-run method, you need to change aspects, lay a trap, etc, and said aspect/trap is NOT on an action bar you can use a hotkey on, then turn on auto-run or hold W while you press the button with your mouse.

I hope that covers it.

I suck at jump-shotting mobs. I tend to overcompensate on the spin and end up running in the wrong direction. I learned a fair alternative- stand at 90 degrees to the target (or a smidge under, so you don't get told you're facing the wrong way), fire and strafe away from the mob. It works better for me.

One of many reasons why I know I'll never excel at PvP. Smiley: grin

I guess it is just my past as an avid FPS gamer that makes it so easy. I've never understood how people find this hard. I just run normally (wasd keys for movement) straight ahead, and jump with space. In the air, I turn around with my mouse (about 90 degrees or more) and fire the instant shot. Turn back, while still in the air and keep running with no problem. After a while, I'll have gained enough range to stop, fire a Multi/Arcane combo and start running again.

It's so easy.

Oh, I used to play Half-Life, UT, UT 2003, Quake, Q2, Q3... but for some reason I always overcompensate in WoW. Perhaps I have my mouse sensitivity too high, but I find that when I adjust it down, it seems to be too unresponsive in other apps. It's a minor annoyance, but I found it easier to use an alternative method rather than have to constantly readjust mouse sensitivity. I use a Logitech MX518, so I know it's not that I have a cheap mouse. Smiley: grin

Edit: be, not bee.

Well, the only way to improve your kiting/jumpshotting is to practice it. To do that, I usually just find some elites my level, dismiss my pet, and start kiting them as far as I can. Hell, pre-tbc I used to go kite world bosses around. With the Green Dragonscale set I could kite indefinitely due to the Mana regen on the set. The Ashenvale dragon boss? Easily kited to Crossroads or further. All kinds of fun elites got pulled all over the place. Of course, to begin with it was hard. But after a while, you get the feel for it.

And that's the best advice one can give, I guess. You will never be good at kiting/jumpshotting with just having a to-do list read up for you. You have to practice it. Strakekiting works too, but just be damned sure you know what you are strafing towards.

I can't jump shot very well, but I did teach myself how to strafe kite.

The Q and E buttons = strafe left and right. You go at full speed. Backing up is at half speed.

You can hold down Q and tap D (or hold down E and tap A) to make a slight, very wide circle. This is to keep the target in your forward facing 180 degree arc - your shooting zone.

Basically you strafe and circle a wingclipped/ice trap snared/concussed victim and arcane shot and sting - pausing maybe, if you have the room, to multi.

You need to practice it. Btw tight strafe-circling is not a bad thing to do when caught in close quarters - when forced to melee.

I do very well in BGs w/ strafe shooting and find it much less tiring than jump shooting, which... I just don't have the "twitch factor" to do.

Easiest way in the world to learn the jump shot, practice in dungeons or whatever while running to next mob, or run back and forth on the Stormwind bridge.

Run forward with Left MB and Right MB held down, jump, release left MB, and spin your mouse in either a left or right direction, if, by the time you land you are facing the direction you were running, then your good, if not adjust from there :P

Yeah, I could never get the hang of strafe-kiting. Some people can do either, some can do one or the other.

run, jump, spin, arcane, keep spinning, continue running...concussive, run a lil further, multi/arcane, run...it goes on and on and on, just dont run outta mana, lol...with viper on its nearly impossible with the time inbetween shots. and like northAI said, having good mouse coordination really helps...unless you're just gifted, lol. This is really fun to do, and you can almost always find some way to practice it.
