Is mining + blacksmith good for a warrior?Follow

#1 Jul 21 2007 at 4:42 PM Rating: Default
I think that since you will be able to make your own armor, and it can be a good supply of gold, that it would be a good combination for a warrior, but it's not always the case. If it means anything, the warrior is going to be a Night Elf

Q: Why are you asking these questions when you haven't even made the warrior yet?

A: I'm going to figure out everything I'm going to do before I start playing so I don't waste money by running around going "Wtf!!!" everyday.

~Thanks for any input in advance~

Well, if you are taking blacksmithing to be a cash cow, you might wanna rethink that and try taking up skinning or herbalism(skinning is better if you ask me because it doesn't need the mini-map and is very easy to keep up). Blacksmithing gets to be a little bit costly to get through the higher points.

End-game though, Blacksmithing gets some awesome weapons and armor that are just gravy =D. If you are going to go towards level 70, I would say that it's better to grab a secondary gathering skill to help compensate the silly warrior training bills.

Have fun and crack some heads

True, you'll be able to make your own armour. When it comes to NElfs, however, I believe there aren't any ore in their starting area. And besides, a moneymaking spec is much much better when you're a warrior, since you're able to buy expensive gear from AH. I'd suggest you go Herb/Skinning (since you're NElf) and sell everything you get. An alternative is Mining/Skinning. Herb/Mining wouldn't be very bright since you can't track two things at the same time.

When you're level 70 you can drop your profs and start over on mining/BS. It's easy as hell to farm when you're high level, and I doubt you'll regret the moneymaking spec. Infact, I know quite alot of people who've kept it even when they're 70. One of them has around 18k gold now -.- Of course there's nothing wrong with going mining/BS from the beginning (although it's a pain as NElf?), just choose something that suits you.

Hope you'll find some of this useful.

First of all, scroll down and click trade skills/by trade. You'll see a list of items, that all proffessions can make.

Basically, BS will let you make weapons and mail/plate armor. The only classes that can use mail pre-40 and plate post-40 are warrior and paladin. And most of the items are warrior-oriented. So, yes, it's a good choice for this class. But know one thing - blacksmithing is a money sink. You're hardly gonna earn enough to break even. Especially if you're going to buy mats off of AH. Plus, you're gonna have to work hard to be able to make items suitable for your level. Usually, you're going to level your character faster than you level your blacksmithing, unless you devote your time and effort to getting mats and honing your proffession.

As a sidenote - if this is your first character, you might want to skip blacksmithing cause it might cause some frustration.

I agree with the others, and would like to stress that unless all you do is lvl your skill, it will be too low to make any useful items. My first character was a mining/smithing paladin, and while I only played him to 31, I was only able to make a single item that was worth wearing. I would spend most of my time with mining as high as it would go in zones I could survive in, and used all the mats to skill smithing.

Another option for you would be to go with mining/enchanting. Yes, yes, I know it doesn't fit the warrior class, but the game doesn't care what class is what profession. The benefit is that most drops and quest rewards are worth more to disenchant than they are to sell. Especially old equipment and quest rewards that are soulbound, you disenchant instead of sell to vendors. You will make quite a bit of money, with the side bonus of being able to enchant your own equipment with minor effects, stuff that isn't worth getting someone else to do. I highly recommend mining/enchanting to new players, since they can make a lot of money very early in the game.

It is, however, ultimately your choice.

I forgot to say that before I make this warrior I'm going to get my mage to atleast level 40 or 50, and by then gold shouldn't be too hard to come by. And at the later levels, it really looks like it could pay off in the long run.

A little late, but I'll throw my .02 in here. As a level 26 warrior, first time player with no alts, I mine and blacksmith. The B/Sing is SO aggravating I want to throw something at the screen most days. By the time you can make something cool that "may" benefit you, you have already found a better item in a drop during a quest or instance. Usually that drop is much better then what you can produce. It takes alot of copper to level up in B/Sing, copper that can be sold in AH for 10 times worth what you can make with it. Alas, I salivate looking at the high level stuff that I can eventually make, but it will be 40 or so more levels before I can do that.
Mining is a great money maker. I have about 30G in my pocket, plus 5 stacks of copper, 5 stacks of tin, 2 stacks of bronze, 2 stacks of silver, and 1/2 stack of gold sitting in my bank account waiting to be used on a mount when the time comes.
I have decided to drop B/Sing and pick up skinning. Even at around level 26 I still kill a fair share of animals, I sure hope it pays off better then B/Sing.
