Edit: Switched the order of the previous posts around to make more sense. This first post is your ideal piece for each slot before heading in Karazhan or Heroics. The second post has the big list that includes this gear, but other options as well if you can't get your hands on the things from the first list.

Shadow Priest Gear – With 5/5 Shadow Focus you will need +76 hit rating on your gear to max out your chance to hit. This should be your first goal, followed by maxing your +dmg as much as possible.
If you are a tailor, have your full Frozen Shadoweave set made and gemmed/enchanted before entering Kara.

Head: Spellstrike Hood with 3x Runed Living Ruby and Glyph of Power
Neck: Brooch of Heightened Potential or Natasha’s Arcane Filament
Shoulder: Frozen Shadoweave Shoulders with #1 or #2 and 2x Runed Living Ruby or 1x Veiled Noble Topaz and 1x Glowing Nightseye if you need the +spell hit socket bonus
Back: Cloak of the Black Void
Chest: Frozen Shadoweave Robe with 2x Runed Living Ruby or 1x Veiled Noble Topaz and 1x Glowing Nightseye if you need the +spell hit socket bonus and Exceptional Stats or Restore Mana Prime
Wrist: Bracers of Havok with 1x Runed Living Ruby or 1x Veiled Noble Topaz and Spellpower
Hands: Tempest’s Touch with 2x Runed Living Ruby and Major Spellpower or Spell Strike OR if you need spell hit Gloves of Oblivion with Major Spellpower or Spell Strike
Waist: Girdle of Ruination with 2x Runed Living Ruby
Legs: Spellstrike Pants with 3x Runed Living Ruby and Mystic Spellthread or Runic Spellthread
Feet: Frozen Shadoweave Boots with with 2x Runed Living Ruby or 1x Veiled Noble Topaz and 1x Glowing Nightseye if you need the +spell hit socket bonus and Enchant: Fortitude
Rings: Seal of the Exorcist and Seer’s Signet or Khorium Band of Shadows both with Spellpower (enchanters only)
Trinkets: Darkmoon Card: Crusade and Glowing Crystal Insignia
Weapon: Gavel of Unearthed Secrets with Major Spellpower
Off-hand: Star-Heart Lamp
Wand: Flawless Wand of Shadow Wrath or Wand of the Netherwing

I no longer play a spriest so I'm kind of out of the loop. I'm curious though, you have a lot of engineering items in there are you suggesting priests take tailoring/engineering? Or that the Shadowcloth set (unlike the Mooncloth) is easily replaceable with Kara/Heroic drops?

My guild raids pretty seriously (we have 4 Kara teams) and most the raid leaders are pushing for priests to take up alchemy to get the Alchemist Stone.
http://wow.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?witem=13503&locale=enUS;source=live

So endgame do you think a spriest should be engineer/alch?

Ok, I went through the list and eliminated items that were clearly inferior, and tried to put them in order with the best choice at the top. Most of the best choices are the ones with spell hit, so if you reach +76 spell hit and you still are looking for upgrades you can grab one further down in the list that has +spell crit instead. :D The section for capes was also completely missing, so I added that in as well.

How come you dont suggest the Battlecast pieces (head and pants) ?

I personally planned to go for them (still being not even 68 tho ._.") but that was mainly because of the head-piece look. Looks waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay better with Frozen Shadoweave than the Spellstrike hat.

Are they just crap or... ?

The general consensus is Battlecast= pvp and Spellstrike = pve. They both have the same +dmg basically, but Battlecast has a lot more stamina and intellect. These stats are great for a pvp caster. The +hit on the Spellstrike set, and the fact that the set has 2 more sockets and thus, more +dmg, makes Spellstrike a lot better for pve. The set bonus for Spellstrike is better for your damage as well.

Oh, and I just use the options to turn of showing my head piece so I don't have to look at the ugliness :D
#6 Jul 12 2007 at 2:30 PM Rating: Decent
Yeh I know about that option as I almost always have it on not-to-show. Even the battlecast head-piece would look a bit crappy on me thanks to my hair :<

Anyways, thanks for the explenation :P

I was going to make something like this, but got wrapped up in raiding and real life. Here's what I have as my ideal Pre-Mag setup, just to reference/whatever.

Soul-Collar of the Incarnate
Ritssyn's Lost Pendant
Frozen Shadoweave Shoulders
Ruby Drape of the Mysticant OR Illidari Cloak of Shadow Wrath
Frozen Shadoweave Robe
Ravager Cuffs of Shadow Wrath
Handwraps of Flowing Thought
Belt of Divine Inspiration
Spellstrike Pants OR Leggings of the Seventh Circle
Frozen Shadoweave Boots
Icon of the Silver Crescent
Cobalt Band of Tyrigosa
Ring of Recurrence OR Khorium Band of Shadows
Darkmoon Card: Crusade
Merciless Gladiator's Spellblade
Orb of the Soul-Eater
Tirisfal Wand of Ascendancy OR Flawless Wand of Shadow Wrath
With all Runed Living Rubies, except one epic dmg/stam gem in order to activate Mystical Skyfire Diamond.

There are a couple "shadow wrath" items in there you didn't have on your list that I'd list as best. Also, Spellstrike is NOT better than a meta socket + Mystical Skyfire Diamond (half casting time on Mind Flay), especially since, as I understand it, it's currently bugged and Flay doesn't sue up the proc, often allowing at least 2 and sometimes 3 Flays to be cast at 1.5 seconds each. Even unbugged, the +dmg from Spellstrike doesn't surpass Mystical Skyfire in damage.
Also, you'll note that some of my gear choices go over the +76 to hit. It should be enough that you can actually free up a point from Shadow Focus, allowing you to put it into other places (most likely, Imp Mind Blast or Shadow Power).

After the listed pieces, your first upgrades will be Eye of Magtheridon, Cord of Screaming Terrors, Band of Al'ar, Band of Endless Coils, and (for the 2-piece socket bonus) Wings of the Avatar and Hood of the Avatar.

These gear lists are great and give me some idea of things I can obtain without raiding. I just specced back into shadow at level 66 and I've found a new found love for the tree. I did level shadow up until Mara when I specced disc/holy and had stayed in that spec for over a year. My problem is I am a single parent, I have a 6 month old at home, and I work nights. I can't even commit to a 2 hour dungeon because inevitably my baby wakes up or refuses to take a nap on my days off.

With that said, besides the frozen shadoweave stuff (which will take me 2 years to get the mats for, but hey, I can try) what do you guys think the optimal ah/quested pieces are for shadowpriest that I can look for? I love playing my priest and would like to get her the best stuff I can for what little time I do have.

You are right, I don't have any "Shadow Wrath" pieces on the list. Mostly because I tend to forget about them since the AH on my server isn't always the greatest for finding that stuff. But, for the wand and perhaps bracers it is a good idea to look for them.

And, I must say I think I was either looking at the wrong Tier 4 helm (how I don't know) or, I just read it wrong. For some reason I thought it was much worse than what it is. I'll add that to the list. Now, if only it would drop for me. I must say though, I think you're the only person I've seen who says it's better than Spellstrike. Every post I've seen, on shadowpriest.com and the like, always say go for Spellstrike over Tier 4. I'll have to read up more on the meta gem.

According to this:
Spellstrike (all +9dmg gems, plus half of set bonus): 80.45dmg
Tier 4 (unbugged skyfire diamond, epic purple gem to activate meta socket): 86.6dmg
Tier 4 (bugged skyfire diamond, epic purple gem to activate meta socket): 124.8dmg
And according to the 2.2.0 test realm notes, it doesn't appear the proc will be fixed. Cheers!

I want Tier 4 to drop as well >.< We've had the priest helm drop ONCE since we started going Kara (erm... 10 prince kills I think?). Meanwhile the pallies have started getting their Ret helms for PvP. *sigh*

Personally speaking I prefer the battlecast over the spellstrike set (for the head at least) there are a few fights in karazhan where shadow priests have excellent utility provided they have the stamina and mana pool to match. For example soaking on the curator and tanking the blue beam at netherspite.
Given that you don't need that much hit rating from gear as a shadow priest I'm happy to give up 16 hit and 9 damage for an additional 27 stamina and 16 int.

I soak curator in a mix of my dmg gear and Soulcloth/Arcanoweave gear for the arcane resist. Buffed my hp is just over 9k health and my mana pool is still over 8k. This is more than enough to soak curator and I still maintain a fairly high level of +hit. I hate getting resists.

The +hit on Spellstrike and the extra sockets more than outweighs the added stamina/int on Battlecast for pve. You can get more stamina/int on other slots if you need it. As long as you have over 8k health raid buffed and 8k mana raid buffed you are fine for Kara and Gruul (all I have experienced so far}.

I just figure if you're going to spend that much money or that much time gathering mats, you may as well get the set that will benefit you more often. You can get pieces for both slots that are just as good as Battlecast in Kara, for example the Trial-Fire Trousers from the Opera event.

I stopped soaking in Arcane Resist at all. I was sitting just shy of 10k buffed in my soak gear, which means I was still out-healthed by most of the locks, any warriors, and a few of the PvP rogues and hunters. It's fairly easy to heal through, and the added damage, mana regen, and healing via VE helps a lot I've found. The only time I go ahead and throw on AR gear is if we have two new and/or ungeared healers.

Yeah, the only reason I said that the stamina is nice for that fight is due to the way that the heateful bolt mechanic works. If you're not top on health at the time of it (due to flares etc) then someone else is going to eat it. I was soaking again yesterday, with 12k hp with a kings and imp buff so no issues with that anymore :P

i just use theorycrafter for loot lists nice that you can choise items per slot, or per instance

I've chosen to get Battlecast hood, simply cause..
It was alot cheaper and easier to get, and it fit's the rest of the frozen shadoweave set so perfect.

I might get spellstrike, I might not. Probably not though cause.. waste of money now and.. I like having a "huge" mana pool and alot hp. (almost 7k health and almost 8.8k mana.. good enough with +842shadow damage imo, I dont have any heroic gear and I dont have so much kara gear either.)

Your mana pool is too high :P As a shadow priest, you mana scales a lot better with +dmg than with intellect. I'm sitting at almost exactly 8k health and 8.5k mana, fully raid buffed. I think my mana pool is actually going to drop more as I get better gear, and won't finally actually start rising again until I hit Hyjal (a loooong ways in the future). I'll take the extra damage *any* day :P

Great gear list, your list of gear you would want pre-heroic/pre-raid, is basically exactly what I have/had.

Bump, and admin please sticky!!!

Switched the order of the posts around so the ideal list goes first. Hopefully over the weekend I'll go through the big list and prune things down some. Especially the post-Kara/heroics list, I need to remove some things and I'll try to get the pre-kara (but non-ideal) list in some kind of ranked order. Here's hoping!

Ok, I went through and removed some things from the long list and tried to rank them. I also added the cloak section, I somehow forgot them the first time around. I am hoping to get this list added to the shadow priest sticky so the thread doesn't get lost, but the author hasn't responded as of yet.

Thanks to Monseigneur RedPhoenixxx for linking this thread to his Shadow Priest sticky.

This will probably be my last shameless bump for this guide until I make any other edits.

What I did was get Mana etched crown + Pantaloons. They are both pretty nice and give +35 spellhit as set bonus which should be very nice to get started with raiding imo.

http://eu.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Grim+Batol&n=Megami

Going for Gruul tonight the second time, he went down after a total of 3 whipes (including High King Maulgar or w/e) on the guild's first try ^^

I do know that there are a kinda lot of flaws in my gear (some stupid gems [including the meta] and other stuff) but I'm currently doing fine.

My point was that with my current equip i could drop 1 point of shadow focus btw... sorry for going off-topic lol

First off i'd like to say great list and thanks to everyone who's contributed thus far.

I was wondering about how much Mana/HP unbuffed/buffed should I have once I have the gear I need? Also what's more valuable a vitality or fort enchant on my boots?(assuming i have the minimum hp for raiding)

Your mana really doesn't matter at all. More +dmg = more VT regen = bigger mana pool.
For health, I'd aim for 8k buffed, which shouldn't be too hard. Once you get to Kael, the first BT boss, and especially Hyjal, getting at least 10k buffed is good (and, at that point in time, much easier).

I'd go for Boar's Speed for a boot enchant. It's got the health, and run speed, and the farther you get in raiding the more running you do. It either means being able to get to point B sooner and therefore start damaging sooner, or getting out of the way of some kind of damage faster.
