Alright. Here I'm trying to list all items worth mentioning pre-raid. I will list the items slot-wise, and the order of which they come up hints which item I deem best. Oh, and all the credit of this list goes to myself and Utarius.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
First, some basic stats you need to know:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tanking:

Defense: This is a stat you need to decrease your chance of being crit. You need 25 Defense Skill to decrease your chance to be critically hit and hit by 1%. The 25 Defense Skill will also increase your chance to parry, dodge and block by 1%.
To get one Defense Skill you need 2.37 Defense Rating (at level 70 that is, at level 60 you need 1.5 defense rating for one defense skill). The cap for when you are un-crittable is 490 Defense Skill at level 70, since you always count bosses to be 3 levels higher than you. Since you've got a base skill of 350 defense you need another 140 skill to get there. That equals 332 defense rating. If your gear has that you can drop points out of Anticipation and put them somewhere you deem better.

Dodge: One of your main aviodance forms. It takes 19 dodge rating to get 1% dodge. It also takes 30 +agi to get 1% dodge.

Parry: Another main avoidance form. You need ~24 parry rating to get 1% parry.

Block Rating: One of your mitigation forms. A good note: Blocked attacks can not crush you. You need ~8 block rating for 1% block. While pure avoidance is better, this is certainly not something you should avoid.

Block Value: A big contribution to your TPS (Threat Per Second), since Shield Slam largely scales with this stat. Should be sought after, and prioritized based on how much of the other stats you've already got.

Agi: A pretty good tanking stat. You gain TPS from the +crit. 1 point of agi grants 2 points of armour. You also get 1% dodge chance for 30 agi.

Hit: A great contribution to your TPS. Almost all your abilities can miss, and there by you see the necissity of this ability. You can negate this by getting +5% hit (for mobs your lvl) and up to +8.6% hit (for bosses, which are assumed 3 lvls above you). Note: If you stack up on +hit it will not make your opponent avoid you less. Avoidance is part of the defence skill, and only weapon skill can eliminate that.

Str: Another good boost to your TPS. You get 2 AP from 1 str. You also get 0.05 Block value from 1 str (meaning you get 1 block value from 20 str). Because of the rather small contribution of block per str it is (just like +block rating) not worth it to stack up on, but shouldn't be avioded. It is very much more efficient to stack up on Block Value than on Str.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

DPS:

Crit: A nice DPS multiplyer. 22 Crit Rating grants 1% Crit Chance.

Hit: One of your main stats as a DW warrior. You need 16 Hit Rating to get 1% Chance to Hit.
Dual Wielders have a base miss rate of 24%. Two-Hand Wielders have a base miss rate of 9%. One-Hand Wielders with no weapon in the Off-Hand have a base miss rate of 5%.
All Special abilities have a base miss rate of 5%. So it's best to have +Hit even if you're 2h:ing/tanking.

Str: Greatly benefits to any ability involving weapon dmg, and evern more so the the Blood Thirst ability. 1 point of str grants 2 points of AP. Str also benefits from buffs such as Blessing of Kings (where you get 2.2 AP from one str, instead of 2), where as +AP doesn't.

AP: Benefits in the same way +str do, although +str is twise as effective.

Agi: Should neither be sought for nor avoided. You benefit more from +crit and +str than from +agi. Still, if an item has it you can only rejoyce. 33 agi grats 1% crit. 1 agi = 0.66% Crit Rating.

2H has the same base 5% miss rate as 1H w/Shield and Specials do. If you're hearing an 8.6% +hit needed for 2H DPS number, that's because that's where it caps out against bosses - your chance to miss against bosses is 5%, plus .6% due to the three level difference, plus 3% that's... kind of just there because. This means that the effective cap for +hit against a L73 Boss is 27.4%, not just 24%, although 24% does apply for equal-level targets.

Quote:

Block: One of your migitation forms. A good note: Blocked attacks can not crush you. You need ~8 block rating for 1% block.

Kind of. Stacking Block Rating is a complete waste for Warriors due to the way in which the Hit Table functions (unless your combined miss/dodge/parry/block is above 85%, adding Block Rating will not help mitigate Crushing Blows at _all_, whereas adding Dodge, Parry or Miss in effect will due to it slowing the consumption of Shield Block charges), but Block Value is of considerable utility, granting both mitigation (albeit not an enormous amount on bosses) as well as increased threat generation for Protection Warriors from Shield Slam.

Quote:

Str: Greatly benefits to any ability involving weapon dmg, and evern more so the the Blood Thirst ability. 1 point of str grants 2 points of AP.

Quite, although raw AP is helpful as well. =p The advantage STR has over AP is that it interacts with Blessing of Kings, effectively granting 2.2 AP per point of STR if you have the buff.

It's worth noting as well that some stats work nicely for both tanking and DPS; for example, Agility is a rather good tanking stat, providing both avoidance and increased threat due to the crit it provides. +Hit is also one of the best tanking stats if you wish to boost your threat output; not exclusively to boost DPS.

More to come!

Are you quite sure? If so, WoWwiki seems to have failed me.

I also forgot to mention the 1.2 increase per level, good point. I'll add it so that people might never ever miss again (or something :P)

Ah yes. Although I came off as suggesting you should stack this stat, what I really meant was that it shouldn't be avioded under any other circumstance than there being pure avoidance as another alternative (if that makes sense :] )

Good point! The thing with the buff might be a little overkill to mention in something that's just supposed to be a gear check, but I'll add the AP point :D

Ah yes, does the +agi need any further mentioning than a side part in the dodge rating bit? I realize the armour bit, and if you think it should be included I'm more than happy to do so.

Also, should I mention the +8.6% Hit for tanks? It is rather useful to know isn't it?

Yeah, WowWiki fails apparently. It's certainly a base 5% miss rating for 2H.

You're never going to cap out on hit as a tank; the itemization doesn't support it in any way outside of a few pieces (ranged slot and weapons, mostly). But yeah, a note about the 8.6% miss chance against bosses would probably be helpful, especially for people gearing up to start doing Kara/other raids.

Well, it's the only thing that seperates +STR from pure +AP, but it is a valid reason to try to grab the STR over the AP if you can because of it. (Well... and the +1 Block Value per... 25 STR, but that's so insignificant it's not really worth mentioning.)

Did you have a formula for the item ordering, or just based on how you rated em?

You can't get 136 +Hit as a tank? Surely it could be done with gems? But then again, you'd prolly know :)

WoWwiki fails me again? :o I thought it was 1 block value per 20 str.

RPZip wrote:

How do you mean formula? Like: 1 stam = 2 def rat = 3 agi = 1 point?

In either case no. I just put the one I thought best going for at "1." the one I deemed second best at "2." and so on. If there is anything wrong feel free to state your opinion :) I doubt I'll change it, but at least people get a second opinon, and get to deside what's best themselves :D

I think it's more like 22.something, but either way, it's pretty small. Don't really remember, though.

Well, yeah, you probably could... if you were socketing in +hit gems instead of anything that gives HP, but that's kind of a mistake. =p

Yha if you look at any top tank every socket is filled with 12 stm gems (or if they are in BT 15 stm gems). 18 stm in meta sockets though.

I looked up kungen the other day and caught him in his tank gear (most of the time I see his profile in his pvp gear) he has 18k hp unbuffed. As well as a tad bit under 20k armor. Also consider he has a bout 47% avoidence and that is one tank that just makes you say "wtf why won't you die?!?!?!?!?"

bzzt wrong. once you hit 490 defense skill you will not recieve a critical hit from any mobs -- except the one or two within the entire game which have special debuffs...

also regarding hit cap and tanking... i'll try to log out in my uncrittable gear with hit (no hit gems... but a couple crits in fact... so i guess i could cap it for the hell of it)

yeah there's a flask buff with 59 min remaining... not gonna click that off to save you guys some easy math :P also gotta get that 18 stam to shield so more or less:

12.4k hp, 15.2k armor, 491 def, 8.3% hit, 11.9% crit... i think my block value is around 350 or so... haven't actually tried out hte new shield yet...

My warrior is in tank gear right now, so here's my armory link:

http://armory.worldofwarcraft.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Kargath&n=Ugrasatsum

What would you guys suggest I work on immediately replacing? For my helm, I just picked that up last night but I also have Felsteel Helm in the bank. What would you all recommend I use? Also, I can make the other two pieces of the Felsteel set, should I? As for gems, I know my gems are not optimal. I am going to buy blue gems for the socketable items I deem worthy of keeping until I start heading to Kara (as soon as I judge myself geared enough).

Lastly, which pieces are good enough that I should enchant them and not worry about replacing them. I don't want to get a good enchant unless I know I'm not going to be replacing my gear for a while.

Note: I am almost revered with Thrallmar and Keepers of Time, just got revered with Cenarion Expedition.

Edit: my shoulders and cloak are from my dps gear. I have not found an adequate tanking replacement for those yet.

Although this behaviour suggests you should become immune to critical hits from level 61 opponents at 430 defense, 62 at 435, and 63 at 440, the interesting part is that it appears that you will still take the very, very rare critical hit no matter how high your defense skill is. There have been reported occasional critical hits from level 60 mobs at 427 and 450 defense. It seems that your chance to be critically hit after the "cuttoff point" is somewhere under 0.1%

Am I using the wrong information source? =/

Lori: If you've got the stuff on the list you shouldn't be too worried. While the one listed as "1." is indeed the item I deem best pre-kara, you don't have to be decked out in all "1.":s. Any items in the range of 1-4 are good enough to carry you through kara.

Part of the reason for me not posting which items you should improve is that the armoury servers are down to me, and I'm not in the mood for writing long posts since I've updated this thread all day. I've put it here so you shouldn't have to pose these questions :)
If your item is pre-kara and not on the list, there's a chance it's not good enough. If there's a question about your item being good enough, but not on my list; please bring it up.

Other than that the reason for this thread is for you to make it out for yourself.

I usually go for the socket bonus, although it depends on how good it is... I tend to socket with gems that also help my HP. For example, on a yellow socket I can throw in a +DEF/STA gem, or a +AGI/STA gem into a red socket and still retain the socket bonuses.

BTW - it's 30 AGI for 1% dodge at 70, not 20.

I'm honestly not sure how it interacts with lower level mobs; it's possible that they're treated as if they were your level for the purposes of the attack, and thus require 490 defense to prevent being crit.

With that said, 490 Defense means you will never, ever take a melee crit from a mob again, barring special circumstances (certain mobs have a higher crit rate than 5%; the Malicious Instructors in Shadow Labs and that drake in Blasted Lands, for example).

Fixed the def cap thing too. Cheers again guys.

Allrighty.

1) Grammarnazi and Spellinazi hooooo!

Quote:

Defence: This is a stat you need to decrease your chance of being crit. You need 25 Defence Skill to decrease your chance to be critically hit and hit by 1%. The 25 Defence Skill will also increase your chance to parry, dodge and block by 1%.
To get one Defence Skill you need 2.37 Defence Rating (at level 70 that is, at level 60 you need 1.5 defence rating for one defence skill). The cap for when you are un-crittable is 490 Defence Skill at level 70, since you always count bosses to be 3 levels higher than you. Since you've got a base skill of 350 defence you need another 140 skill to get there. That equals 332 defence rating. If your gear has that you can drop points out of Aviodance (the talent) and put them somewhere you deem better.

It's not Defence, it's Defense. (Or, since I do this a lot - it's not De Fence, it's De Fen, Se?) The Defense talent is also called Anticipation, not Avoidance.

Quote:

Block: One of your migitation forms. A good note: Blocked attacks can not crush you. You need ~8 block rating for 1% block. While pure avoidance is better, this is certainly not something you should avoid.

Probably should say something about how Block Rating and Block Value are different stats, and how they function. It's also mitigation, not migitation. (Come to think of it... just do what I do, take the post and run it through Microsoft Word or something with spell check, although Firefox now has a rather good spell checker.)

Quote:

Hit: A great contribution to your TPS. The only way for Revenge to fail is miss. All your other abilities can also miss. You can negate this by getting +5% hit (for mobs your lvl) and up to +8.6% hit (for bosses, which are assumed 3 lvls above you).

Er... Revenge can be dodged, missed or parried like any other attack. It's not Overpower!

Alright, spelling point taken, talent misses taken, for stats... I really didn't intend this to be an adept stat thread, but I'll add it since Block value plays a big part of the TPS role.

As for revenge (and anticipation too for that matter) I'm really sorry. Both very easy to look up, although I'm not as used to playing warrior now what Utar's account is down (curse him...) I coul've swore I saw an Overpower looking tooltip on Revenge :( Obviously wrong. Good of you to point it out though, since I don't want to be fooling people ;)

This is an interesting thread and I'm liking it a lot(rate up btw!). I picked out one item for each slot you had listed (quest rewards and easily crafted gear and skipped a few slots because you didn't list a quest reward) and ended up with +261 defense providing the rep reward from the Ogres is received (and no reason it shouldn't be a week or two after hitting 70).

This will more than meet the expectation of 490 defense. My question is if it is worth it to wield something like the Vindicator's Brand instead of a "tanking weapon" for a fresh 70 for the added damage while tanking? I can't imagine any reason why the answer to this would be "don't get that weapon, you're a tank, not a DD" so I'm collecting rep items for Aldor even though I am not to that point.

For the most part this will only pertain to someone that has alts already sitting at 70 but as my first 70 hit exalted with the Scryers in 3 days I don't see any reason this can't be done by anyone.

One thing I would add to the guide is a quested item for each slot. That way no matter if you are a new 70, old 70, great drop rates or not everyone can have a baseline for gear that can be obtained easy and with a 100% success rate.
