This topic contains a large list of pre-raid gear that is suitable to start raiding with, epic gear pre-raiding and tips and tricks to help you start raiding.
With gear from this list you should be ready to raid karazhan and start your raiding career in the World of Warcraft.

NOTE:
- PvP gear isnt optimal and I wouldnt get more then a few pieces.
Same goes for Leather gear as that usually misses out on int and Mp5.
(and yes, the BG pvp epics are listed under blues, because thats what they are equal to for PvE)
- all gear in this list is obtainable pre raid.
- gear marked as *H* is from heroic instances.
- Gear marked with <!!>, <bm>, <sv> or <mm> is the best (non epic) piece in my opinion.
<<These pieces are generally the most balanced and i cant guarantee that combining all them would give the best combination of pieces.>>

Dont bother with a +12 dmg/+2%crit for blue weapons, generally its not worth it to spend that much gold on a blue. (for example, on my server +10 dmg goes for ~25g, +12 for 100g and +2% crit for 400g)

An 18(+) slot ammo pouch/quiver is also needed, you can get a quiver from your Nagrand rep group or AV and an ammo pouch from Consortium.

Small note in between, this is what you end up with statwise if you get all the items i piced to be optimal.
BM, MM, SV
(you need to activate AotH/TSA yourself in the buffs section right under the gear, the site doesnt remember buffs)

Hunter Consumable List+info
Thanks to TKA.

Anyone that comes to a raid with unenchanted gear and without the proper consumables is a slacker, so pay attention to that!

'Cookie-Cutter' raid builds:
BM, Machine gun
MM, Big numbers or MM/sv
SV, Endless crit or CC master

1 SV rest BM is the best for raids, MM/sv and CC master arent geared towards raiding as much as the other specs.
Also, Improved hunters mark and effeciency can be switched.
Effeciency is better for personal use, but in a raid with many physical dps your Imp. HM will help a lot.
In the end its a personal choice.

for every hunter, ~7k hp ~6.25k mp will be good
BM: 20% crit and 1650AP
MM: 20% crit and 2000AP
SV: 27.5% crit and 1650AP (~650 Agi unbuffed)
(AP with AotH)
~5% +hit for starting karazhan, hitcapped for the later bosses.
(surefooted ofcourse counts for 3%)
Note: these stats are to aim for, they are relatively high and generally high enough for the whole of karazhan.
Dont be afraid to do whatever you can to get their though ;)
Also, its better to be over the top a bit on crit and a bit low on AP because raidbuffs give a lot more AP then crit.

Pets:
check Petopia for more and detailed information.

In raiding you want top dps from your pet, simply because that is all it can do.
A list of popular raiding pets:
Ravager: Best dps pet because of Gore+bite and high base dps.
cat: virtually the same as ravagers only exchanging gore with claw.
Slightly worse at dps because gore is better then claw.
Windserpent: Used to be top dps but lightning breath has been nerfed.
Though it still does good damage and its the only one that can do damage from a distance.
WS can probably do more dps then ravagers if you have enough crit, however this doesnt come into view until you are T5(+) geared.
WS also currently have a lot of trouble wich forces you to take LB off of autocats and incorporate it into your macro(s).
Scorpid: Used to be top dps, but since Scorpid poison got nerfed, they are back to being weak dps pets used only in arena to keep healers dispelling.
Wolf: Furious howl doesnt require your pet to be in melee range so wolves give you (and your group) a bit of extra damage when its impossible to send in your pet.
Sadly, there isnt a new furious howl in tBC so its not really that good anymore.
Owl/bat: decent dps but their strength lies in screech.
Screech is a powerful debuff when fighting melee mobs, However, in my opinion screech doesnt shine in raids.
carrion birds are the same as owls/bats only with lower dps and more hp.

Dash/Dive is a useful tool for pets, it allows them to get out of melee/AoE fast to help them survive longer.
Thus my advice is to leave it off of autocast as you dont want your pet to reach a boss before the tank anyway and being able to get it back quickly is a big help.

General rules of thumb:
* Your pet is melee, that means that you should place it where the other melee is.
* If melee has to run out of range, so does your pet.
* If your pet is taking damage make sure you have mend pet up a lot.
* Avoidance, Great stamina (and resistances) are important, they keep your pet alive longer.
* Armor isnt as good because your pet wont get a direct hit, and nearly all AoE is magical damage.(gruul is the exception here, getting max armor and stamina there will be great for keeping your pet alive)
* If your pet does get a direct hit, its dead anyway.
* And ofcourse: Cobra reflexes is a must, it is a big improvement to dps.

Hunter Macro's
Note: to make a macro open chat and type /macro
You will then get a nice box where you can make new macro's, give them a nice picture and a name.
The most common shooting cycle macro's, you need to test for yourself wich works best as it differes greatly with weaponspeed and latency/fps.

/console Sound_EnableSFX 0
/castsequence reset=3/target !auto shot, steady shot
/castrandom arcane shot, multi-shot
/cast [exists,target=pettarget,nodead] kill command
/script UIErrorsFrame:Clear()
/console Sound_EnableSFX 1

No CC present, 1.5:1 shooting cycle
shooting cycle with Auto, steady, arcane and multishot.

/console Sound_EnableSFX 0
/castsequence reset=3/target !auto shot, steady shot
/castrandom arcane shot
/cast [exists,target=pettarget,nodead] kill command
/script UIErrorsFrame:Clear()
/console Sound_EnableSFX 1

CC Present, 1.5:1 shooting cycle
shooting cycle with only auto, steady and arcane shot.

#showtooltip Steady Shot
/script UIErrorsFrame:Hide()
/castsequence reset=3 Steady Shot, !Auto Shot
/cast [exists,target=pettarget,nodead] Kill Command
/script UIErrorsFrame:Clear(); UIErrorsFrame:Show()

BM Auto-steady with killcommand
basic BM shooting cycle.

#showtooltip Steady Shot
/cast !Auto shot
/cast [target=pettarget, exists] Kill command
/cast Steady shot
/script UIErrorsFrame:Clear()

3:2 Macro, no castsequence wich is better for dps.
Its a clobbering macro though and it will make you clip some stuff.

all 4 shooting cycle macro's work through spamming the button.
Add in the "/castrandom Lightning Breath" line if you are using a Windserpent.

Any constructive critisism, gear I missed, enchants I missed or other tips/tricks that should be added (or removed) are very welcome so please post them.

Thanks in advance for any help,
-Æthien

The credits for making this are not just for me, i couldnt have made it anywhere near as complete as it is now without all the people from Allakhazam and TKA that helped. :)

Forgive me if I'm just not aware of how difficult it is to acquire the mats for this stuff, but how do you rate the ebon netherscale stuff that a leatherworker can make? I finally chose dragonscale as my speciality the other day after reading through these threads and the various opinions about how attack power may be (is?) more important to a BM Hunter than agility. Before that I was considering the elemental leatherworking for the agility, but you sacrifice intellect, sockets, and armor (I know armor isn't that important for a hunter, but it does scale for your pet)...but all of that is for a different thread. Assuming I could get the stuff for those three pieces together, would they suffice for raiding?

the chestpiece is close to T5, belt and bracers equal to kara gear.
i'd say they're good enough ;)

I didnt include them because they require having leatherworking youself.
basically, if you're in full blues lvl67-68+ (most lvl 70) with the right stats your gear will do for kara.

so if you arent sure about some pieces of your gear, check if they are equal to the stuff in this list.
#4 Jun 18 2007 at 12:19 AM Rating: Good
For the helmet you should add Stalker's Helmet of Second Sight
One of the best helmets and easy to get since you only have to do a quest chain for it. Put 3x 8agi on it or 3x 16ap and the helmet is just soo nice.

For the rings I would not add violet signet.
1st reason the ring is not that good.
2nd reason its a reward you get from raiding Kara, so you cannot have this ring when you prepare for raiding.

Another thing I want to add. It might be helpful to post some type of stat requirements for raiding.
So as a hunter you might want (all values self buffed, so incl. aspect of the hawk and TSA if you have specced for it).
~7k HP
~6k Mana
up to 136 hit rating (or less if you specced surefooted.
As a BM specced hunter: ~20% crit; > 1.8k RAP
As a MM specced hunter: ~20% crit; > 2k RAP
As a SV specced hunter: >25% crit; >= 1.6 RAP

Having those stats you should be ready for raiding Kara and the early 25mans (Gruul and Magtheridon).

Very nice list and something we need to get stickied if possible.

I'm planning on getting my full Dragonsclae LW gear or Felstalker gear from LW as well whichever I get the mats for first. Hoping all the time I've spent levleing LW will be more than worth it.

One thing to point out (which not everyone is aware of). You do not need to match gems to color, only if you want the socket bonus. You can usually get better stats on gear without the socket bonus anyway. Especially if you are trying to max out crit or ap or something like that to be raidable.

they are the same pieces, so you cant have them both at the same time.
and i would make the Dragonscale Breastplate first because that is the only item that you cant replace/find an equal for in Heroics/Kara.

I dont want to include those, simply because they take a lot of time to get and are really geared towards PvP.
In the same time you could get an epic from heroics wich is a lot better.

This list is purely for PvE, if anyone else feels like it please make a similar list for PvP.

Rate up, this needs to be a sticky! :)

I'm still working on my Scaled Greaves of Patience (ran Old Hillsbrad 4x now)... I'm finally STARTING to get there... lol.

EDIT: I'd also add Delicate Green poncho from the Nagrand quest. That seems a feasible alternative if you don't want to wait for the drop from Durnholde and it's fairly easy to get :)

Another option for a neck piece for people who haven't gotten an instance drop yet would be Natasha's Choker from this quest.

Personally I'm disapointed with the ebon dragonscale LW, no freaking agi for hunter gear? wth! everyother class has their gear with what they need most except ours. SV hunters(like me) forced to skip on the reward for grinding to 375 LW, all the good LW could be bought by any gold buying noob.

Ahh, sorry, I guess since the list is TOWARDS raiding, the 6 mana/5 on the Boots of Endless Hunt and a bit of AP would be better than 0.8% crit from the PVP boots.

P.S. Survival hunters really got screwed over by Blizzard's need to provide the same gear for both shamans and hunters.

Nice, I'm no war so i can't comment on the gear but asfar as layout: try to state the more important stats after the item name. Don't make us click on them all with 10 windows open to compare them all.

They're rated 1st, 2d, 3rd and so on. And if you don't trust my judgement you can suit yourself with your 10 windows open! :D

Ok, heres an idea from the armory. If your rating them by numbers have the lower items show a negative state from the number one item. Or the other way around from the worst to best. I.E. item number 1 has 50sta and 25 str, item two has 25 sta and 50 str so it would show the difference of -25sta and +25str.

Example builds for each spec for raiding.
Survival
Beastmaster
Marksmen

for pure raiding, i dont think you can improve much to these builds.
however, i want to check for anything i missed before i edit them in together with the couple of mentioned gearpieces and more epics.

edit: if you know improvements, post about them in detail please.
(points from talent x to talent y for z reason.)

All your specs have 5/5 improved hunters mark.
That is an assumption I would not make when doing pure raid specs.
Those points especially hurt with the survival spec (a marksman hunter will have enough points left).
You could e.g. go from Survival (0/25/36) to either 5/20/36 or 0/20/41.
With the last build you can either choose to place the last point in 3/3 thrill of the hunt or 1/1 for readiness.
From my experience 5/5 efficiency and 2/3 thrill of the hunt is sufficient, so I went for readiness.

All those builds are a lot better if you don't have to spend 5/5 on improved hunters mark. With survival you can see the benefit you can get from those 5 talent points.
I'd recommend that those die hard marksman spec into hunters mark. Or let BM hunters spec into that (instead of 5/5 efficiency as BM hunters already need a shadow priest to make that spec really strong).

Yeah, i was thinking of adding alternatives for Imp. HM in.
but honestly, for BM there is only effeciency in case you are still doing mostly kara, for MM... well there are no real options..

and assuming 2 hunters in a 25 man raid 1 SV and 1 BM, with BM having IHM SV can go full on Dps (and faster shots=more crits)

you is good hunter, me likes how you think ;)

edit: tiny extra improvement.
Because if i end up in melee i drop an immolation/snake trap and use a raptor strike.
and this enhances your play in 5 mans/solo too. (even though its a miniscule bit ;) )

I see a lot of Sonic Spears. I see the alternatives, but they just don't seem as good. Is there anything else that is equal to or better than the Sonic Spear?

I'm just one of those weird guys that doesn't want to wear the same shirt and shoes as someone else at the party.

You can always wear what the other half of the pre-raid hunters wears which is Hellforged Halberd from HH revered.
A little bit better damage wise, but has na STA on it and looks even worse than Sonic Spear.

Edit says: Or just have a look at the melee weapon section of the 1st post here. Aethien has the basic weapon choices covered quite nicely.
