I have a Warp Stalker named Gojira and I tend to name my Ravagers Fluffy or some other obnoxiously adorable name.

I like to name my pets in an appropriate language for the character's race. My blood-elf's pets are mostly named in quenya because there's not enough Thalassian published, and quenya's the closest. When I had a Draenai hunter I named the pets in Russian or Czech. I will always name a pet even if I'm only keeping it for a short while just to gain a skill.

Bear: TiuCumba (means Fat Belly in quenya)
Cat: Naryo (means Fiery One, one of the bright red lynxes from Eversong Woods)
Glis (means Honey, a ghostclaw lynx)
Spiders: Shelob (name of the spider from Lord of the Rings), InsyWinsy
Boar: Hogger (that got a few laughs from ex Ally players)
Raptor: Scalybutt
Owl: Sovicka (Russian for Little Owl)

All except TiuCumba and Naryo have been re-released to the wild.

If I cant stand something its to see a hunter running around with a pet named Cat or Boar. I call my one-time pets Temp.
Though I like short names, when I got Trachela the other day I called her Agrippina - she simply looked it to me the first time I saw her, like some decadent savage empress on her throne.

I tamed a Ghost Saber and called it "ChatPasLà" ... french for "cat not there".
It was meant as a bit of a joke because my duo-partner, also hunter, had Humar the Pridelord and was calling him "Chocolat".

I had an idea where I used the 7 deadlysins.

Cat = Pride
Bear = Gluttony

Themes are cool I think!

first pet: scorpid = "Undertow" because he was low to the ground and brought mobs down

second pet: boar = "Sabot" because he reminded me of the munition.

third pet: bear from near Silverpine "Screwface" because of how he looked.

fourth pet: wolf from SPF "Anubis" (obvious reference)

all of them abandoned except Anubis, who is stabled, for my Ghost Saber "Satori," which kinda means "enlightenment" or "understanding" related to Zen. Kinda funny because my toon's name is Badnews.

I plan to keep Satori the whole way through. I'm still trying to decide on a good tanking pet but for now Satori has been awesome.

cheers

I like to choose names that have folklore or etymologic roots..here goes ^^

I have a dragon hawk named Branwyn...of course I was a noob and misspelled it brenwyn. Branwyn = beautiful raven in Gaelic.

I also have a red kitty and his name is Sunstrider after both the lands he resided in and his coloration.

Graceful, but functional IMO is the way to go ^^

I did something similar to that, but my red kitty from Eversong is named Surtr. Goes well with my name, Heimdallr. Both are based off of Norse Mythology.

I am now using the three pets I plan to for the rest of my Hunter's existence.

Cat - Terminator
Ravager - Predator
Raptor - Governor

I think they're funny for the originally unplanned Arnold Schwarzenegger (sp?) connection. After naming the cat and ravager and realizing (hey those were both movies he was in) I figured I would complete trifecta with the raptor's name, but couldn't think of a 3rd movie he was in that was any good. At least one that would serve as a good pet name.

After a bit of agonizing, I named my boar 'JimmyDean'. I like several of the names mentioned for piggies earlier but didn't want to just copy those. Some of you may remember advertisements for Jimmy Dean's Pure Pork Sausage? No?
