My pets are all on my sig (even the ones I've released back into the wild)
I just named my newest cat (Rah'Shiri) Miska

Wind Serpent Buddlight (bud for buddy, light for LB)

Bat - Chiroptera (scientific genus name for bats)
Pink Tallstrider - Roseus (the species name for giant flamingo)
Dog - Ami (after my RL Dog)
Cat (non-panther) - Neko (after my RL cat, and Japanese for cat)

I like to choose names that have folklore or etymologic roots..here goes ^^
I have a dragon hawk named Branwyn...of course I was a noob and misspelled it brenwyn. Branwyn = beautiful raven in Gaelic.
I also have a red kitty and his name is Sunstrider after both the lands he resided in and his coloration.
Graceful, but functional IMO is the way to go ^^

I hate having to come up with names. Takes me quite a bit of time to come up with Toon names. So I generally cheat and use name generators to randomly assign my beasts their monikers.
Except in the case of those I'm taming solely to learn an ability for. I never used to change their names at all, but I got "yelled at" by a number of guildies for this practice. So now I give them names that fit their purpose. TempTank, Meatshield, Skinsaver.
The only pet I have, or have ever had, that I bothered to name thoughtfully is my pvpet, an Elder STV Tiger named Wetspot. Win or lose, there's a wetspot on the ground when you've finished tangling with him. (oh happy beast mastery. What can't you do?)

I named my cat "Dog". Spur of the moment, not really thinking about it kind of thing. Then I find out I can't change my pet's name. Life goes on.
I've had the same Moonstalker Runt since level 10 ... Evenstar.

Ironclaw--raptor from durotar, first pet... ditched him at about 15.
StoneGmork--black worg (after Gmork from Neverending story... and also stone for the blackrock worg, because he's the same skin). Still got this one around, but he's a few levels behind.

with the dwarf hunter i got 3 pets 1 of which i have had since level 24 his name is Nuke and hes a big wolf/worg. the other two are Tag my white tiger and Crombie my white bear.
With the orc hunter i only got one pet right now and her name is Dishu the leopard from the barrens still have her and i get plenty of compliment's from people who see me with her :)

My Humar the Pridelord is named Humar.
The story behind that involves a retarded friend, a moment of weakness, around 20 levels past the 23 level range, and alot of yelling. But nowadays I mostly just say that "Who am I to force a new name onto the Pridelord? He is Humar, and I am just glad he chose to join me. Taking away his name, would be disrespectful to say the least."
