Easy / Solo-able Gear for the New 70 MageFollow

Introduction

I have seen many requests for a list of "easy to get" gear for the new level 70 mage on the official US and Europe mage forums. A good resource is Kaliban's Class Loot site but it doesn't make an actual comparison of gear in terms of ease to obtain and stats.

In my spare time, I made my own list of good easy-to-get items for when I hit level 70. The items are obtainable solo through quests, crafts, or purchase on AH. In most cases, I did not include items obtainable via PvP due to the time it takes to grind the necessary honor points, tokens, and/or arena points for them.

My choices were primarily based on spell damage, spell critical rating, and stamina bonuses (the latter because I will be focusing on PvP at level 70, as such there may be some better alternatives for PvE). In some cases, I have included alternatives that are either more difficult to obtain or provide less stat bonuses.

I wanted to share this here on Allakhazam and hope it will help new level 70 mages and casual players like myself who do not have the luxury of running instances and raids.

This list is in no way exhaustive, and in all likelihood incomplete. So I ask that if you know of a better alternative, please reply to the thread or PM me. Thank you.

Sections:

Assumptions on Sockets and Gems

A number of items in this list have gem sockets. There are many possible gems for each type of socket and there are some gems that offer a combination of stat boosts. Moreover, gems do not need to match the color of the socket. The advantage to matching the color is that you will get the socket bonus on that piece of gear.

To simplify gear comparison I always matched the gem color with the socket color and used gems that boost a single attribute.

Note: I may go back and redo the socketing to try to get the best balance of stats.

Red = +spell damage
Yellow = +spell critical rating
Blue = +stamina

I have assumed that the following gems will be placed in their respective sockets whenever available for items listed.

Red socket: +9 Spell Damage
Runed Living Ruby --- 350 Jewelcrafting, approx. 70g on AH

Yellow socket: +8 Spell Critical Rating
Gleaming Dawnstone --- 350 Jewelcrafting, approx. 54g on AH

Blue socket: +12 Stamina
Solid Star of Elune --- 350 Jewelcrafting, approx. 70g on AH

Inexpensive Gem Alternatives
For mages who do not want to skill up on Jewelcrafting or spend too much gold on the AH, the following alternatives can be had for a fraction of the gold. Please note that these gems are limited supply items from NPC vendors, so you may need to camp them a bit or pay a little extra on the AH.

Red socket: +7 Spell Damage
Runed Blood Garnet --- 4g from NPC

Yellow socket: +6 Spell Critical Rating
Gleaming Golden Draenite --- 4g from NPC

Blue socket: +9 Stamina
Solid Azure Moonstone --- 4g from NPC

Gear List

HEAD: Tourmaline Crown
Spell dmg: 35
Spell crit: 30
Stamina: 24
Intellect: 18
Spirit: 17
Obtained via: Quest

This is a decent helm with a nice mixture of stats. It is a reward from a quest in Blade's Edge Mountains. From player feedback, it is possible to complete this quest with a level 67+ duo, and possibly soloable at level 70.

Alternatives

Spellstrike Hood and Battlecast Hood
These two items are possibly the best helms pre-raid. They are Bind on Equip so can be bought from the Auction House, making them relatively easy to obtain. However, they cost a lot of gold; approximately 1300g for Spellstrike and 800g for Battlecast. To craft these items yourself requires 375 Tailoring skill and the Bind on Pickup patterns from the Shattered Halls (Spellstrike) and the Steamvaults (Battlecast) instances.
Crown of Endless Knowledge
This is a Bind on Equip world drop that can be purchased from the AH for approximately 150g. As a side note, I think the graphic looks very cool :D
Evoker's Helmet of Second Sight
This is a great helm with excellent stats once you put gems in the sockets. Unfortunately, one part of the quest chain, Divination: Gorefiend's Armor, requires a group and a flying mount (or a warlock summon) to complete. The Alliance quest chain starts here and the Horde quest chain starts here.

NECK: Charlotte's Ivy
Spell dmg: 23
Stamina: 18
Intellect: 17
(2 piece) Set bonus: 15 spell damage
Type: Bind on Equip
Obtained via: World drop or Auction House purchase approx. 850g

Alternatives
Natasha's Ember Necklace
Natasha's Arcane Filament
These two neck pieces are better than Charlotte's Ivy in my opinion, but are rewards from a Scryer's only quest chain so is not accessible to mages who have aligned themselves with the Aldor.
Pendant of Dominance
This is a very good neck piece but will require some time collecting battleground tokens and honor points.

SHOULDERS: Frozen Shadoweave Shoulders
Spell dmg: 50 (Frost and Shadow only)
Spell crit: 8 --- (from yellow gem)
Stamina: 33 --- (21 base + 12 from blue gem)
Intellect: 15
Spell hit: 6 --- (socket bonus for 2 gems)
(3 piece) Set bonus: Your Frost and Shadow damage spells heal you for 2% of the damage they deal
Type: Bind on Pickup
Obtained via: 365 Shadoweave Tailoring

Alternatives
Spaulders of the Torn-Heart
These shoulders are very good for mages of all specs and does not require Shadoweave Tailoring, but they are a reward from an extremely long quest chain in Shadowmoon Valley that is not entirely solo-able. There is a very good write-up on Wowhead in the "Comments" section that explains the entire quest line. Most of the quest line is solo-able but the second-to-last part, The Cipher of Damnation - Borak's Charge requires at least 2 people, preferably 3 to complete.

BACK: Cloak of the Black Void
Spell dmg: 35
Intellect: 11
Type: Bind on Equip
Obtained via: 350 Tailoring skill or Auction House purchase for approx. 250g

Alternatives
Sergeant's Heavy Cape
Requires 13875 honor points and 20 Arathi Basin battleground tokens.

CHEST: Frozen Shadoweave Vest
Spell dmg: 72 (Frost and Shadow only)
Spell crit: 8 --- (from yellow gem)
Stamina: 42 --- (30 base + 12 from blue gem)
Intellect: 20
Spell hit: 6 --- (socket bonus for 2 gems)
(3 piece) Set bonus: Your Frost and Shadow damage spells heal you for 2% of the damage they deal
Type: Bind on Pickup
Obtained via: 375 Shadoweave Tailoring

CHEST: Spellfire Vest
Spell dmg: 72 (Fire and Arcane only)
Spell crit: 36 --- (28 base + 8 from yellow gem)
Stamina: 20 --- (12 from blue gem + 8 from socket bonus for 2 gems)
Intellect: 17
(3 piece) Set bonus: Increases spell damage by up to 7% of your total intellect
Type: Bind on Pickup
Obtained via: 375 Spellfire Tailoring

Alternatives
Imbued Netherweave Robe
Imbued Netherweave Tunic
These two items are Bind on Equip and can be bought on the AH for approx. 20g or can be crafted with 360 Tailoring skill (no specialization requirement).
Anchorite's Robes
This is a nice robe that can be purchased once you have reached Honored with the Aldor.

WRIST: Bracers of Havok
Spell dmg: 30
Spell crit: 10 --- (8 from yellow gem + 2 from socket bonus for 1 gem)
Intellect: 12
Type: Bind on Equip
Obtained via: 350 Tailoring skill or Auction House purchase approx. 120g

Alternatvies
Blackstrike Bracers
Another Bind on Equip item crafted with 350 Tailoring skill, but this one has spell critical instead of spell damage, stamina instead of intellect, and 5 mana per 5 second; all for approx. 200g on the Auction House.

HANDS: Gloves of the High Magus
Spell dmg: 26
Spell crit: 22
Stamina: 13
Intellect:18
Spirit: 10
Obtained via: Quest

This is a good item with well-rounded stat boosts. It's a reward at the end of a quest chain in Shadowmoon Valley that starts here. I went through the quests in the series, and it appears to be soloable.

Alternatives
Spellfire Gloves
This is an excellent alternative for Fire mages who happen to be Spellfire specialized Tailors. The stats and set bonus are much better than any other soloable and/or easy to obtain item I could find. It is Bind on Pickup though, so you need to be specialized in Spellfire Tailoring with a skill of 365 or more.

Netherweave Gloves
For those who aren't Fire spec or are not Spellfire tailors, this is the easiest alternative. It is very easy to find and can be had for only 5g on the Auction House or crafted with 320 Tailoring skill. You can find much better instance drops so if you are able, run a few instances for your hands slot.

WAIST: Girdle of Ruination
Spell dmg: 48 --- (39 base + 9 from red gem)
Spell crit: 28 --- (20 base + 8 from yellow gem)
Stamina: 26 --- (18 base + 8 from socket bonus for 2 gems)
Intellect: 13
Type: Bind on Equip
Obtained via: 365 Tailoring or Auction House purchase approx. 1500g

Alternatives
Spellfire Belt
A good alternative for Fire spec mages, but it requires Spellfire Tailoring specialization because it is Bind on Pickup.
Unyielding Girdle
An alternative for the PvP mage. This belt has good amounts of stamina and resilience as well as an interesting set bonus. It can be crafted with 365 Tailoring skill. For non-tailors, it is Bind on Equip so can be bought from the Auction House for approx. 1500g

LEGS: Imbued Netherweave Pants
Spell dmg: 30
Stamina: 39
Intellect: 26
10 mana per 5 sec
(3 piece) Set bonus: 28 spell crit
Type: Bind on Equip
Obtained via: 340 Tailoring skill or Auction House purchase approx 48g

Alternatives
Spellstrike Pants
One of the best cloth pants for mages pre-raid but they approx. cost a hefty 1400g on the Auction House. If you want to craft them yourself, you'll need 375 Tailoring skill and the Bind on Pickup pattern thatdrops in the Shadow Lab instance.
Battlecast Pants
Another pair of excellent pants crafted from Tailoring. They'll cost approximately 1000g from the Auction House. To craft them yourself, you'll need 375 Tailoring skill and a the Bind on Pickup pattern that drops from the Botanica instance.

FEET: Frozen Shadoweave Boots
Spell dmg: 57 (Frost and Shadow only)
Spell crit: 8 --- (from yellow gem)
Stamina: 27 --- (15 base + 12 from blue gem)
Intellect: 9
Spell hit: 6 --- (from socket bonus for 2 gems)
(3 piece) Set bonus: Your Frost and Shadow damage spells heal you for 2% of the damage they deal
Type: Bind on Pickup
Obtained via: 365 Shadoweave Tailoring

Alternatives
Imbued Neterhweave Boots
These can be bought from the Auction House for a mere 25g or crafted with 350 Tailoring skill. They are decent boots that will serve you well until you get a chance to run some instances or redeem PvP rewards.

STAFF: The Bringer of Death
Spell dmg: 121
Spell crit: 42
Stamina: 32
Intellect: 31
Type: Bind on Equip
Obtained via: World drop or Auction House purchase approx. 280g

Alternatives
Auchenai Staff
This is available to mages aligned with the Aldor once their reputation reaches Revered. A decent staff that's almost as good as its instance-drop counterparts and only requires some rep grinding.

Note: Comparable mainhand/offhand combos require instance running; either for drops or for reputation gains. The good news is there are a lot of good swords/daggers to choose from if you do have time to run instances. Check Kaliban's list for details. You can also do PvP for the Grand Marshal/High Warlord/Gladiator items.

FINGER1: Band of Dominance
Spell dmg: 28
Spell crit: 21
Type: Bind on Equip
Obtained via: World drop or Auction House purchase approx. 61g

FINGER2: Khorium Band of Frost
Spell dmg: 27 (Frost)
Stamina: 27
Mana per 5: 7
Type: Bind on Equip
Obtained via: 355 Jewelcrafting or Auction House purchase approx. 110g

Or...

Khorium Inferno Band
Same stats as above, but +27 to Fire damage instead of Frost
Approximately 75g on AH

To be added later...

Real good Yellow or Red alternative for any mage is, Potent Flame Spessarite. About 2-3g on AH for gem or already cut usually, give2 +3crit rating and +4 spellpower.

Thank you for pointing us to that gem :D

To keep the stat comparision simple, I have used gems that boost single attributes but of course, each mage can mix-and-match gems to get the best combination of stats that they desire most.

I'd suggest looking up Spaulders of the Torn-Heart.

Decently easy questline, that is the start for Black Temple attunement. The shoulders are unmatched, and are the reward of about a 8 chain quest.

Actually, it starts up The Eye attunement(after doing it, you receive a letter that instructs you to speak to A'dal, who gives you the first 3 quests for The Eye attunement). The full questline does result in a fairly decent staff as well.

Those shoulders are awesome, and you get a really nifty look if you combine them with the Evoker's Helm and The Will of Edward the Odd.

Thanks MYteddy for pointing us to these shoulders. I've added them as an alternative for the shoulder slot. I would have made them the main recommendation since they are good for all mages regardless of spec, but due to the second-last part requiring 2+ people and the length of the quest chain they can't really be classified as being "Easy / Solo-able".

Also keep in mind gems do not have to match their sockets. Little point in putting stamina gems in blue sockets for a resilience bonus if you want max +dmg - throw those +9dmg gems in there.

Well, you included Evoker's Helm, which is an even HARDER questline. Figured those shoulders shouldn't go without mention as it isn't hard to gather 3 people for such a nice reward.

Thank you and good catch, Lsfreak. I did not even realize that when doing the comparison of items. I have noted it in the "Assumptions on Sockets and Gems" section and may go back and re-analyze the item comparision in the future.

In all honesty, I did not check the entire quest line on the Evoker's Helmet of Second Sight. Thank you for pointing that out to me. I will have to re-evaluate the Head slot.

Evoker's does require level 70 and a mount as well. Or a warlock to summon you to the island. Just a note to put if you put it under alternative.

I made a lengthy post on another thread about the PvP gear I'm aiming for, and the stuff I can grind (solo) while I'm working towards it. I'll quote it here since it is related:

echou wrote:
What I'm shooting for is to get 2pc Grand Marshal and 3pc Gladiator (but still a long way from it with the minimal play time I have lol :P). That way you will get both of the 2pc set bonuses (i.e. 35 + 35 Resilience). I can live without the 2 sec reduced Blink time :P

Grand Marshal's Silk Handguards
Grand Marshal's Silk Trousers

Then the other 3 pieces from Gladiator set... Gladiator's Silk Amice, Cowl, and Raiment (shoulder, head, and chest).

I lose the least stats by going with the GM gloves and pants.

That is my long-term goal. In the meantime, I have some stuff to work towards. I checked out a lot of gear that I can obtain without doing instances and here's the list I came up with:

Note: I think the honor costs on Wowhead are the reduced ones from upcoming Patch 2.1.0

HEAD: Spellstrike Hood (approx. price on AH = 1300 gold)
NECK: Pendant of Dominance (18,000 honor, 10 Eye of the Storm tokens)
SHOULDERS: Frozen Shadoweave Shoulders (Shadoweave Tailoring)
BACK: Sergeant's Heavy Cape (11,100 honor points, 20 Arathi Basin tokens)
CHEST: Frozen Shadoweave Vest (Shadoweave Tailoring)
WRIST: Bracers of Havok (approx 110 gold on AH)
WAIST: Girdle of Ruination (approx 1500 gold on AH)
Or Unyielding Girdle is a decent alternative for only approx 580 gold on AH
LEGS: Spellstrike Pants (approx 1600 gold on AH)
FEET: Frozen Shadoweave Boots (Shadoweave Tailoring)
STAFF: The Bringer of Death (approx 60 gold on AH. The price on this came down a lot it seems... a few weeks ago, wowhead had it estimated at 200 gold)
Or Auchenai Staff is a good alternative if you are allied with The Aldor (Revered)
FINGER: Khorium Band of Frost (approx 110 gold on AH. For you, there's also a fire version of this, Khorium Inferno Band)
And Band of Dominance (approx 61 gold on AH)

Using combinations of the following semi-easy to obtain gems:

Runed Living Ruby (+9 Spell Damage, approx 55 gold on AH)
Gleaming Dawnstone (+8 Spell Critical Rating, approx 45 gold on AH)
Solid Star of Elune (+12 Stamina, approx 55 gold on AH)

and accounting for any socket bonuses I might get when the correct colored gems are used... I get the following generalized stats:

Maximize Spell Damage:
Spell damage: 755 (Frost)
Spell critical rating: 169
Stamina: 264
Intellect: 158
Spirit: 10 (lol)
Mana per 5: 7 (lol some more)
Spell Hit: 38
Resilience: 48

Maximize Stamina:
Spell damage: 629 (Frost)
Spell critical rating: 169
Stamina: 432
Intellect: 158
Spirit: 10
Mana per 5: 7
Spell Hit: 47
Resilience: 48

Balanced:
Spell damage: 665 (Frost)
Spell critical rating: 177
Stamina: 384
Intellect: 158
Spirit: 10
Mana per 5: 7
Spell Hit: 47
Resilience: 48

I'm gonna leave out the actual combinations of gems (since this post got way longer than I intended already) but suffice it to say I did a lot of "inter-webbing" and plugging into spreadsheets. I may have made some mistakes though, so take all this as a general approximation.

Now, for Fire specifice, you'll have to look it up (or someone else will have to post). But in general, Spellstrike + Spellfire sets are really good for Fire mages.

Now that badges of justice can be exchanged for nether vortexes I would suggest you add the Belt of Blasting to this guide:

Stats:
Spell damage 50
Spell Crit 30
Spell Hit 23
Socket bonus 4 Spell damge
Blue Socket
Yellow Socket

Since the badges are occasional drops in the SSO packages from the dailies over time anyone can get these. The spell hit bonus makes this belt a solid choice for the prospective raider through T5. Far better, given the respective price/effort, IMHO for the prospective raider than the girdle.
My $.02 and worth what you paid

Not sure where exactly it fits in with your recommendations, but I would suggest looking up the ring reward for the scryers version of Shutting Down Manaforge Ara.

Another neck alternative would be the SSO rep reward.

Some Trinket Suggestions for when you get going:

Scryers Bloodgem (revered with Scryers)
Vengeance of the Illidari (Quest reward from Hellfire)
Ancient Crystal Talisman (Quest reward from Zangarmarsh)

Great thread, nice work.
