I never actually seriously thought about this before but what about and all elemental build like going for ice barrier in frost and fire power in fire....You could still get shatter combos and ice shards and that stuff, but could also have pyroblast and blastwave with crit mass and fire power and ignite and stuff from fire........So is this a valid idea or is it just not as good as staying in one spec??

I had a spec similar to that before TBC. It's fun for PvP as you can get some great blastwave/shatter crits. Honestly though, it suffers in PvE due to lack of the really good +damage/+crit talents higher in both of the frost and fire trees (and water elemental).

It is fun in PvP though. ;-) My advice would be to try it and have some fun.

I talked to my friend about this build too and he was really intrigued because it looks awesome on paper, but is probably just not as good as it could be......It would be awesome if you could get combustion and ice barrier, but that would be too much probably for other classes to handle.....Well the next expansion it will be possible, but I don't think ppl will care to do it because of the next tier of talents which will most likely be insane.

I've been playing wow for some time now and yes I still have trouble with talents.Alot of people tell me to figure out my own but lol my own do not work.I'm currently going with all fire. Then at level 70 I'm going to respect back into frost for pvp.But fire seems more profitable for soloing I think as stated many times above.Just wanted to say without players like you, Players like me would be lost in limbo.Wanted to say thanks.:D

Holy crap this is a good post. Between this and "A Humble Submission of One Mage's Thoughts" (I *think* that's the title): http://wow.allakhazam.com/db/class.html?wclass=7;mid=120329190164451035;num=31;page=1

let me start off with, this is a freakin' awesome thread. i'm so glad someone took the time to make it, as it has shown me at least 3 new things (not including different builds) that i can apply to leveling my mage.

here's my question: has patch 2.4 changed any of the builds, and if so, how, and what should the builds be changed to? this is my first mage, (currently at lvl 14), and i have almost no experience with casters (except getting killed by them). i currently have all my points in imp. fireball, and i (usually) solo everything i do.

my main is a 70 warrior, so i have no experience aoe grinding. with that, it's usually have 2 or more beating on you, and cleave+t.clap+rend everything till they're all dead. i'm really not used to the idea of NOT getting hit. any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Well the main way to keep yourself untouched is usually by casting from a good distance away and then frost nova and then more casts and instants till dead.....I dont recommend Aoe grinding till youre around 30-40 mainly cause at 30 you get ice block which helps if everything goes wrong and at 40 you get ice barrier which makes aoe grinding much easier in that if you get hit you are not interrupted....After awhile it is just second nature to plan out your spell rotation just takes getting used to...Plus if you have too many mobs just sheep one that usually helps alot too.

Not to mention the mount, which really makes the life of an AoE grinder much better.
