Thanks FractalSynapse, I think this is the trick! ;) Mouse turning offers much better control than keyboard especially for this AoE grinding.

Hi all, I just happened to go through the Key Bindings option, and found that there is one function to invert current camera direction, which is very useful when you runnning to a direction and just want to check for what's going on at your back. Bind it with a key and immediately it switch the view to 180 degree of your current one, try it! ;)

I have to say that this guide has worked great for me in conjunction with the list of AOE areas. Right now I'm pure frost (and staying that way until 40 before getting subtlety) and at lvl 32. My current maximum is 6 mobs at once with me averaging 4-5 a pull. I'm fairly twinked from my lvl 60 friends (my main is a 60 paladin) and guildmates, so I have lots of blues and +spell damage gear for my lvl. I have a total of about +50 frost damage (that's total combined between +frost and +spell) and a just shy of 3k pool with about 1250 HP. Due to my low lvl I get about 10-15k/hr (included rest). I can't wait to hit 50 when AOE grinding seems to really shine.

Great write up, I can't wait to level my mage enough to put this to use! I'm playing an engineer mage right now, and am considering trying some of the bombs and like that have AoE stun effect to give me some more freedom with timing. Any advice?

Hi, ive found this guide really helpful but i just got a two questions:

1.The aggro range... im currently lvl 22 and AoE'in in the Ironband excavation site with Stonesplinter Troggs and the max i can pull without messing up is 3. I try to run around and pull more but the ones i pulled ealier end up runin away back to there spots and im just left with 2 or 3 again, and even if i do pull 5 - 6 it just messes up so what am i doing wrong or is it because of the monsters? which brings me on to my second question

2.When i watched the video posted earlier in this post the mage didnt seem to get hit once, i know that he is most prob lvl 60 but why aint the monters hitting him? it seems as though the chill affects on the monters dont wear off whereas when i FN and the Blizzard the Troggs are chilled for a thew seconds and return to normal speed and when i got about 5 or 6 of them hitting me my health seriously goes and if i use mana shiled my mana goes.
#86 Feb 02 2007 at 2:39 PM Rating: Decent
It's best to start the AOE grinding after you get 3/3 improved blizzard and 3/3 frost channeling Aranknar, less mana is used and the chill is longer and more powerful on the blizzard. Also, by that time you'll have cone of cold to help as well. If you grind on high greens/low yellow con mobs then you should have an easier go at it. Also, don't forget that Cold Snap is your friend and frostbite is your worst enemy when AOE grinding.

There is one talent you overlooked that is an absolute neccecity if you plan on AOE Grinding guys about your same level- or mobs that do an increasingly huge amount of damage(sorrow hill comes to mind at 51)

Water Elemental- Because it has a freeze ability- is on a 3 minute timer- and can actually tank an add or a spellcaster you didn't see for the duration of your blizzards. The key thing is that it doesn't use a coldsnap to refreeze enemies, and can take on adds.

http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/info/classes/mage/talents.html?2300550000230000000000000000000000000000000000505023313035010251011

^that's what my current build is going to look like at 70; I'm only at 55 though myself ATM. I found that it's a great AOE build and a decent grouping build. To AOE just start on frost work your way down without worrying about arcane till you get Water Elemental.

Piercing Ice is a great ability BTW- simply because 6% extra damage = 18% extra blizzard damage(assuming it takes 3 blizzards; and then an extra 6% on CoC) ends up usually just enough to kill most mobs perfectly :D.

Overall I really loved your guide- great detail for the mostpart on how do AOE grind without havin the snot kicked outta ya. Wether or not you'll be unscathed is up to luck. ^_^

EDIT- Oh... and you should try AOE grinding at Sorrow hill in WPL- it's really rough though mind you- mobs are tough. You should really wait till 52 to get your next level blizzard. http://wow.allakhazam.com/db/class.html?wclass=7;mid=1170435199139576853;page=1#117078644631817132

Not much to add that hasn't already been said, but here are my two coppers.

I finished the last half of 59 in two hours and 29 minutes. I know this because my beautiful lady friend was playing her fire mage, and we were comparing experience gains while soloing. She timed me while I soloed the lumberjack camp in WP. I didn't die once and gained about 50 gold thanks to a few green drops and one blue.

It's difficult to Frost Kite without taking any damage; the mobs have to be very close before the pull, you have to have a low ping so you can time your spells correctly (Frost Nova in particular) and you can't have any resists. Don't grade your performance on what others say they can do. You're the one with the character. Enjoy it your way, and let the braggarts brag.

Also, a little trick I use; after casting Ice Barrier, wait about 15 seconds before making the pull. Since it lasts 1 minute but has a 30 second recast timer, you can cast it shortly after it fails. This also gives your mana time to fill before you make the pull, which can be important on those "Oh crud I just got an add with 10 percent mana" pulls. It takes a little patience, but can make a bit of a difference.

Happy nuking!

Another bump, just to say I'll update for new talents when I have a sec.

Not too much changed though.

Another bump as there are loads of AoE grinding questions at the moment.

I've spent a lot of time getting my priest his keys so mage is only at 64 atm. I'll update guide, including talents when I hit 70 and have tried a few things out.

Basic principles remain the same, though.

(I won't rise to the comment about braggarts ^^)

I dont like youre step 8. But to each his own.
I circle strafe the pack to clump em up, dismount, CoC if theyre still to spread out, i never dismount and just stand there waiting from them to get closer.
In Outlands those Vultures sre very good for AOEing only the have a knockdown, forcing you to play really precise. I really play to dont get hit a single time in a run, in which i accomplish about 1/1000 runs :P
For me youre step 8 is something you expect youre going to be hit while thats the phase that you want to prevent to be hit the most in all of the AOEing phases.

Elemental makes AOE grinding risk free, correct misfired FN's and can offtank the odd repop. Just remember to put him on passive the second you summon him, its really irritating that it doesnt "save" that setting.

The mod ezDismount makes AOEing a teensy bit easier.

I've aoe ground my mage from 24-40 using this method. Mainly because I have levelled 4 other characters to 60+ via quests and wanted to try something different.

I can take around 9 mobs my own level - any more than that and I'm a dead gnome. This is probably because of my pull technique, I get hit by most of the mobs when I pull (may have to check some aoe videos out) and all of them seem to daze me.

I tried grinding on the murlocs in DWM, the main camp I can do the pull of the NW side of the camp, but when I try the east side I get loads of problems with the terrain. I think being a gnome causes some difficulties, but it might just be me.

Some favourite problems:
Not being able to see over small hills in the landscape
Starting my blizzard and finding out some (if not all) mobs aren't being hit
I once blinked at Go'shek and got stuck under the fence
I also managed to cast blizzard behind myself, I think a roof of a house got in the way when I was targeting.

I could probably make a very good guide on how NOT to aoe grind.

Quick question as I have recently got my mount. Does dismounting cause the GCD? If not, would it be possible to make a macro to dismount and then FN?

/dismount
/cast frost nova

should work

You don't even have to use /dismount, as if you are mounted and you cast a spell like frost nova, it will auto-dismount you.
