No, that would have been the T-Rex from Ungoro Crater, and it is not tameable. You can get a smaller raptor however from Barrens, STV or a few other zones. Takk the Leaper, a black raptor in Barrens has a nice fast intercept speed (not as fast as he used to be, but still fastest of all the raptors).

Many other elite animals ARE tameable, however they revert after taming to default stats for their family, so there is no real advantage to taming an elite except the thrill of the challenge. Only intercept and attack speeds vary within a family (with exception of Lupos, and caster-stat windserpents), and faster speeds are even more common on regular pets than on elites/rares.

Also, for the poster who wanted to compare various hunter gear and it's impact on DPS, you might check out Duskwalker's Hunter Item Comparison, it only lets you compare two otems at a time but perhaps may be useful. It also gives links to some very indepth discussions on gear and DPS.

Whats a good strategy on fighting Druids? Because as a Hunter I feel extremely gimped going up against one. I say this because everything we can do they can do better, well ok they can't FD, or FT, or use guns,etc.... But who needs those when you got root, farie fire, moonfire, and can shape shift out of snares.
I don't see any abilites in a Hunters ******* that can give us an edge in killing Druids. I can **** one off by, SS'ing it and Trap kiting, but all that does is delay my death. I at least stand a chance against all other classes, but to a Druid I'm just an easy HK. I'm not gonna go into the way the fight goes b/c its pretty much root 'n' nuke.

Are Druids the paper to the Hunters rock?

basically we are when they nerfed the sting. When we could drain mana no matter thier form hunter>druid. But now we hurt bad, the way we win is if they run, assuming you are quick to react and such as they will shift out of snares, you just gotta be ready for it and such. Dont forget your scatter shot tho. Basically you could go for the melee, if they switch to bear form then get away from them. Last I checked they cant shift out of traps, jsut cuncussive and such. So you gotta do the trap+aimed shot+trap+aimed shot +dots, make sure you get your pet on them too.

Feign Death is a level 30 skill you can get from the hunter trainer.

Far as i can tell spirit bond is just too slow to be worth anything the old spirit bond was brilliant and would be even better since the 1.7 pet buffage but what we are dealing which is a very minor amount of extra health during any situation where you actually need it, if you are in the postion to get 500secs to regen during a battle im guessing you have healers with you. improved pet focus is a bit pitiful pets don't exactly do lots of damage anyway and what they do is normal 'white' a few points of extra focus in two clicks is hardly worth using your talents on. My advice is to go for the dmage talents, ferocity frensy BW etc, and improved pet healing 1 talent gives you 15% chance of removing a cc effect from the pet every click with 5 clicks per use of heal it works enough(lowest lvl costs 50mana) to be well worth the point plus you are healing you pet :) and if you put that extra talent in it's 50% per tick, i cannot over-emphasize how good this is.

Hi Bartzor,

from what i gathered from comments left on thottbot: the best pets are among the rare spawns and some of the elites (despite the fact that they lose their elite status when tamed). At your lvl, it would be best to wait a bit, bcoz among the cats at any rate, the best are supposed to be: Broken tooth (37) - a rare spawn puma in the badlands - and Bangalash (43) - an elite tiger in stranglevale... Although some like bag'thera (elite panther, 39, also stranglevale).

Broken tooth is highly rated bcoz of his very good attack speed (1.00)...
but i tamed Bangalash yesterday AFTER having owned Broken toot, and found him to be much better, and that without training or much loyalty.. But my judgment was intuitive based.

I honestly think that there are no vast differences between regular pets. they all have their pluses and minuses, but one of the very annoying things about WOW is that they are very good at keeping everything fairly balanced, despite the fact that everyone dreams of being grossly and unfairly tougher than everyone else, not many things are out there to make that happen (unless you have a lot of luck and get a few epics before 60)

Actually it is a bit of a myth that the best pets are elites and rares. All pets default to a base set of stats for their family when tamed, two exceptions to this being pet attack amd pet intercept speeds.

While a few very "famous" exceptional pets are indeed Rares or Elites, such as Broken Tooth or the SFK Slavering Worg, their unusual attributes are just as likely to occur in a common spawn animal -- ZG Bat is neither Rare nor Elite and has the same 1.0 attack speed as BT, and 1.2 attack speeds are very easy to find among such common spawns as Starving Mountain Lion or Swamp Jaguar. The vast majority of elite/rare spawns have identical stats to the rest of their family after taming. While there isn't a common spawn wolf with 1.2 speed, the most famous wolf of all, the AV Frostwolf, is neither Elite nor Rare.

Lupos is somewhat an exception to this as he is the ONLY spawn with shadow damage, but that is being removed in 1.9. Pet pursuit speeds, one of the other areas where pets can differ from base family stats when tamed, are also being standardized in 1.9, and pet atack speeds are likely not far behind.

King Bangalash is often cited as an exceptional pet, however that is based entirely on a speed advantage that he lost well over six month ago -- today he has the exact same stats and abilities after taming as a basic Mountain Lion cat.

Thanks for the incredibly helpful post.

I'm just starting out and kindof learning as I go... I wish I'd read this a few days ago, before I made my first character a Hunter. It might have saved me a little aggrivation, and maybe I'd have thought twice about killing The Rake when he caught me questing in Mulgore.

Someone asked for a formula calculating total ranged DPS for a hunter:

Edit
Originally I had a formula here but it didn't work exactly right when I tested it, I'm looking into a better one. Sorry about that.

in the original post it talked about 360 shots, and i figured i might add my technique to it, what i usually do is turn on auto run or hold foward, then using the mouse i right click it jump, and turn 180, shoot arcane/sting, then i turn back mid air, if you time it right it works quite well...

Some of this will not be accurate until level 60, and I'm doing this off the top of my head, so it might not be accurate at all! =p

Ranged attack power (RAP) = Agi*2 + AP_from_items + 100 (I think?)
Crit rate = Agi/53 + Crit_from_items + Crit_from_talents

Basic "white" DPS, aka tooltip = (RAP/14 + Weapon_DPS + Ammo_DPS) / (1 + Quiver_Haste/100), multiplied by Ranged Weapon Spec bonus

Autoshot DPS with crits = Previous line * (1 + crit_rate * Mortal_Shots), where Mortal_Shots is 1 for no points and 1.3 for max.

Multishot DPS = (Autoshot DPS * Modified Weapon Delay + 120) / 10...or however many seconds it takes you to reshoot it.

Aimed Shot DPS = (Autoshot DPS * Mod Wep Dly + 600) / 9...or however long your reshoot time is.

Serpent Sting DPS = 32.7, * 1.1 for Improved Serpent Sting

Total personal DPS = Autoshot DPS + Multishot DPS + Aimed Shot DPS + Serpent Sting DPS. Obviously this does not include the pet.

I didn't see or missed 1 important question for new hunters like me who didn't know about resources such as this site and tamed a beast at 1/2 his own lvl.

How do you get rid of a pet so you can get a better one?

Truly get rid of forever? Right-click on the pet's portait and choose "abandon".

Awesome thread, very informative. One thing, I use FD alot in PvP as my pet is attacking. It makes them auto-target my pet and gives me a couple seconds of no attacks. Not much, but every little bit helps sometimes. Now a pet question, or an obsevation rather. I tamed one of the Jaguaro Stalkers(lv50) in STV for the Cower 5 and Prowl 3. I checked it's atk ratings: 144-175 dmg, 2.00 atk spd, 79.8 dps. That was while it was happy and with TS Aura+75. Just last night I tamed a Frostsaber Cub(lv56) for Cower 6. I know, WTF is Cower for anyway? I just like to have the option if they ever do come up w/ a use. It's atk ratings: 85-104 dmg, 1.50 atk spd, 62.9 dps. I double checked it's happiness, and made sure my Trueshot was active. Everything was the same as when I checked the lv50 cat's ratings. Has anyone ever noticed anything like this, both the same type of pet, but one w/ much more dps. I mean, what would the Stalkers dps be @ 56 if it was that much more than a lv 56's at lv 50? Maybe it's due to the fact it was a Frostsaber "Cub", but a cat is supposed to be a cat. I'm going to check the dps of a regular Frostsabre @ lv 56. Just something I noticed.

Once again, great job on the thread.

Why should we pay 15 dollars a month i think it should be 5 to 10 dollars a month because over time 15 will add up to be a finacial deficit
