WoW Lockpicking FAQFollow

Okay I didn't go through every post, so just ignore if this has been posted. The lockpicking quest goes gray at 170, for horde at least. The SM doors don't level you very fast at all, so that's kind of pointless unless you have NO life. Also at 175 there are lockboxes in Tanaris in the pirate areas. That's a really nice place to lock pick, decent respawn. The Polly quest for horde, also is gray at 170. All the lockboxes in ratchet are gray at 100, aside from that one. The chests inside SM also go gray at 170, if not sooner, and the boxes you pick off of them also go gray at the same time.

The post on the chests in Desolace on page 2 of this thread is spot on.
The chests were exactly where listed and there is one air bubble area
to catch your breath without having to surface...
My lockpicking skills had been neglected, I am a 43rd level rogue who
up had a lp skill of 116.
I couldn't open chests in a couple of instances and my mates were
not pleased at leaving locked chests behind in SM and RFK....
:p
1st I went to the tower in NE Barrens, Sludge fen and got my lp skill up
to 161, before I got tired of picking locks without any skill advancement.
Remember there is a poison trap in the box... I have to find a friendly Shaman
to remove the poison, it's a 7 day one..
Then went to NW Desolace, off the coast in Naga country... the Nagas pretty
much left me alone, only had to fight them if they were on top of a chest...
went from 161 to 215 in about 1 hour... would have gone faster with a water
breathing potion.. and about 45 minutes into my waterlogged adventure and
49 level gnome rogue showed up breathing water.... there were only a few
cases of both of us going for the same box, (PvE world Runetoteum)...
I went up a skill point with every lockbox, so for me at least, this area
was good to get to skill 215...

Torlagi 43rd Level Rogue BE Runetoteum

you're not paranoid if they're really out to get you...
the question is not are you paranoid, but are you paranoid enough...

Guys I want to know how much you charge for lockpicking boxes. Is there a rate table we rogues can follow? I don't want to keep doing this as freebies to everyone except for guildees. We should make use of these skills for some sort of income.... be it cheap.

Any suggestions?

I never charge, I just expect a tip and if I don't get one, meh. I never go out of my way to Lockpick though, usually I only do it if its in my area.

Usually when I get the message though I'm in Shat so its never to far out of the way.

My 70 rogue only has 285 LP haha
I should get that up there, as should all 70 rogues
When trying to get better gear and what not, having that maxed out LP helps

1. after you get the skill, Red Ridge has boxes in the abandoned mill, max out your skill there, then

2. look around the murloc huts outside of menethil harbor max out your skill, then

3. lockboxes in Desolace in the water, max out your skill there then

4. Angor fortress in badlands, max out your skill there, then

5. Lost rigger cove in Tanaris, max out your skill there. LOTS OF BOXES close to gether here! can take you all the way to 295.

6. Eastern Plaugelands/Outlands to finish it off

Assuming you have maxed your skill every 10 levels, you shouldnt have to spend but an hour here or an hour there to have 310/310 skill by lvl 62.

Of course if you love pickpocketing like me, (dangit i just gotta see what im gonna get next!) You get skill ups in between training trips.

Hope this is a bit more concise.

BTW this is fine for Both horde and alliance.. even on PVP servers.. cuz if you didnt want to PVP, you wouldnt have picked a PVP server!

To power level lockpicking past 150 quickly, I found the following areas to be the easiest. No spamming in trade channel, no pickpocketing mobs for hours. These areas have LOTS of chests on the ground that you simply unlock.

150-225 Off coast of Desolace. Just swim between the two islands at approximately (33,24). Don't forget to bring a few breathing pots.

225-300 Chests in Lost Rigger Cove in Tanaris.

300-375 Wicker chests in Feralfen village in Zangarmarsh

You can level up from 150-375 in 2 hours easily in just these three areas.

Oh my.... guess the old-timers haven't been checking this thread... Macro this right now:

/cast Pick Pocket
/cast Garotte (or Cheap Shot, whichever opener you use)

... and use it on every mob you attack. Be sure you have Auto Loot turned on (in game settings) and you will be swimming in Lockboxes in short order which should keep you at full lockpicking skill level at all times. Worked for me. ;)

Good luck.

If you're getting lock boxes that are too high level, you'd need to start pick pocketing lower level humanoids for lower level lock boxes. Also I mail the high level boxes to an alt so it doesn't take up bag space or bank space and you'd have at most 30 days to get lock picking up.

Got bored doing Durnhold so at level 38 and 120ish I headed to Hammerfall and hit paydirt.

As horde, I hit the trolls around Withrbark Village (lake in southeast corner of map) - no lockboxes but picking pockets gave me the next step up of boxes (min skill level 70) and even though they were reading green, I was getting skill ups off of them about 80-90% of the time.

Ogres and trolls at Boulderfist produced the same results as did everyone in Stromguard Keep.

I tested the pvp flagged allies at refuge point and they have the 175+ skill boxes on them (those boxes seem to drop off of 40+ mobs).

Sure, its a bit more dangerous then Durnhold but the box spawn rate was sucking for me every time I went there and I picked up 20 skill points in the hour I wandered through those three areas.
