For teh discussion on rachet being a netral town. Rachet is in the barrens, the barrens is horde controled territory. In rachet Horde cna attack you but you cant attack them first, only after they hit you the first time. The Faction is neutral the Land is owned by us. And once you leave rachet you are fair game for all, the guards wont protect you anymore.

Reading from page 1, when the first person mentioned getting ganked in rachet i have a feeling he meant by horde not by the guards. The guards only attack someoen who starts stuff in town. But on a PvP server entering rachet as alliance is no different then a horde character entering westfall.

i just started WoW and chose to be a undead rogue, i read all you said about lock picking and have a simple noob question lol...lock pickin opens doors and chest..but wut is the real point of it? are there items in these boxs? does spending all this time lvlin ur LP make a huge differnce and is worth the time? wut do i get from it lol? sorry to be such a noob but im new and i want to understand :P thx

Lockpicking is one of the many fun things about being a Rogue. At lower levels it's not that big of a deal. But once you hit your 30s it starts getting useful. You can start opening lockboxes for players, which can hold some NICE stuff, and you can open locked doors that would normally require a quest/money to find/buy the key. As someone mentioned above, the key to the doors to Scholomance costs about 15 gold. A Rogue can just pick the door outright. Same goes for the doors for Scarlet Monastery, Gnomer, and other instances. Also, it's a good way to make a bit of pocket money. Case in point: I was in Stormwind with a bit of free time, having just maxed my LPing skill to 245 for my level (49). So I did a zone shout that I was opening all boxes for tips. Immediately, someone handed me a Reinforced Steel Lockbox, a Thorium Lockbox, and two gold to open them.

Yes, people pay GOOD cash to open the higher-level boxes, 'cause you can get nice, high-level greens, and the occassional blue item. Also, when opening for others, make sure they put it in the "not to be traded" slot, otherwise you won't be able to pick it. Then, select your lockpicking skill (drag it to the action bar, trust me) and click the box, hit trade, and they get an opened box! Hopefully, you'll get a skillup if it's not gray, and if it's red, both of you are outta luck. Hope this is helpful for the newbies! Oh, and when doing a shout that you're opening boxes, make sure you mention that you accept tips. Some people don't tip, but don't get cranky. They're just being cheap or forgetful. Besides, I've heard of people paying 5g to open the higher-level boxes, so you'll make up the difference eventually! Good luck, and good hunting!

Perhaps I missed it somewhere but I didn't see anyone mention the footlockers in Wetlands located in the murloc camps and surrounding area. I'm at lvl 160 and some are still yellow and green to me. I went directly to these after finishing with the practice boxes in Alther's Mill.

*Note: the ones in the actual murloc camps are higher lvl to pick than the ones that are scattered and the ones in the water.

Just thought I'd add this;

Both lockpicking quest main chests go grey at 125. This is Lucius' Lockbox in Redridge, and the "Polly" chest on the ship south of Ratchet.

Both poison quest chests go grey at 175. This is the one at the top of Klaven's Tower in Westfall, and the one at the top of the tower north of Sludge Fen in the Barrens. Both of these will inflict the "Touch of Zanzil" curse when opened (-15 AGI, drastically reduced stealth ability).

It looks like the footlockers outside Menethil Harbour and the ones inside Durnholde Keep are the same levels, but there are two different ranges. Some are yellow to me at 160, some are green; I would imagine the ones that are green will go grey at 175 and the ones that are yellow will go grey at 200 (possibly 225?). Swamp of Sorrows and the ones of the Sar'Theris Strand in Desolace also appear to be the same pair of level ranges (some of them at both places are yellow, some are orange).

If you start the furbolg quest in felwood (the timbermaws) you can get yourself up to threatning - at this point the furbolg wont attack you - and you can pick their pockets to you hearts content. They drop junkboxes that you can pick. This is also true in Azshara where the higher level furbolgs drop higher level boxes. If they catch you just vanish (or kill them but you may have to raise your faction some more).

this was all done at lvl 43. Not sure if the chests & stuff grey out earlier depending on your combat lvl or not but this is what i found.

First 1-90.
There are a bunch of locked boxes on a boat below ratchet you can train on until 105. I'll use the map to Polly to show you where the boat is located.

90-125.
On the same boat there is the single chest that respawns about every 3 seconds or so that you can start on at lvl 90 i think is the minimum until lvl 125 max. It is on the same boat just lower level in the cabin.
*Note* For this you'll need to go in your spell book and Click on the Pick Lock ability manually and then click on the chest or it won't work. (Or you can download the addon i have attached.. it lets you pick lock without having to do so)

125-170.
The Poison quest for Rogues contains a chest in it that you need to open to get a Cache of something i forget the name of it. The chest is located RIGHT next to Grand Foreman Puzik Gallywix

170-175.
Here is where you get options on what to do. Being an undead rogue i was leveling in the badlands at the time so I went to Angor Fortress and trained on lock boxes there until 225. But Once you hit 175 you can also train on the locked doors at SM. The location of angor fortress where the boxes are is by this guy Ambassador Infernus

175+.
SM Doors can be pick locked.
Lock boxes in Angor Fortress are still able to level you up.
Pick Pocketing mobs over lvl 42 give sturdy lock boxes which will get you past 225 I think.

Hope the info helps to you Rogues out there.

Also keep in mind the lower level you are your pick locking skill will be cap'd.

45 - 225
44 - 220
43 - 215
42 - 210
41 - 205
40 - 200
... and so on.

can sum1 give me a quick place to lvl up from 215 up? ty
#111 Nov 07 2006 at 9:36 AM Rating: Decent
One place that appears to have been missed (I didn't have the heart to read thru all of the responses) is in the lake around the Sunken Temple. With the exception of the occasional fish or group coming thru for the instance, you won't be bothered. Just swim laps around the temple. You should get 4-5 box spawns per lap. I don't know the levels, but you shouldn't grey out prior to around 250 and I think the starting range is around 175.

could someone show me a link to the FIRST LP quest? I have the skill in my spellbook & ability list, but I'm sure I haven't done a quest for it. I'm doing the Elite quest 'Possible but not Probable' and apparently I need LP skill to open the chest. And I see no 'respawn' chests near the Org trainers, Horde guide please

Ratchet is a neutral town. But the surrounding land is Horde land. There is a neutral AH there, a bank Alliance can use and a FlightPath for Alliance.

The ratchet box just went grey for me at 125
#116 Nov 22 2006 at 8:05 PM Rating: Decent
At lvl 33 i just maxed out my skill to 165 in the westfall tower having had the ratchet quest go grey on a 125 skill, i didn't aggro the boss at the top and the box is still green for me. This was a lot easier than swimming around redridge or running around the wetlands

I am only new to the World of WarCraft and have only been playing for about 3-4 weeks now but I have found no mention of my info below about lock picking (though might well of missed it, so please be kind).

-------

It's not easy being a Dark Elf Rouge!

We are all on the wrong island for lock picking and poison quests, but I came across a not quite perfect solution to going over to the Eastern Island for lock picking. You should be able to get upto level 125 without ever leaving for foreign shores by following the info below. Hopefully higher levels to follow !

As soon as you get Stealth lvl 2 this should work (I was level 22 before I did this though). . .

Purchase a set of lock picking tools from the the seller in Darnassus (I am sure the quest is the only way to get them free), once you have these tools you get lock picking lvl 1.

Make your way over to Atranaar in Ashenvale. Just off the road about 100 yards west from Astranaar there is a camp of Thistlefur's. There are loads of them going all the way up North from the first camp you see. Stealth into the camp and start picking pockets.

I get a Battered Junkbox from about every other Thistlefur I pick. It's easy to go round most of the camps and pick 30-40 pockets in about 15-20 mins. You can then retreat to someplace safe and start picking all the lockboxes you have found.

The advantage with this although it takes longer than using the practice boxes on the Eastern Island, you get money for it. Each run I have done I get about 15-20 silver from just the cash and then more from the Junkboxes, sometimes over 1s in each. I also very often come across Healing Potions which sell for 10s+ on my server, along with the food and the odd green item. I reckon I make about 1-2gold per run. I dont know how long it takes for them to be reset (perhaps only when killed?) but there are lots of them anyway. This got my lock picking up to 75-80 over a couple of nights.

Then I just went over to 'The Zoram Strand' (Western Coast of Ashenvale) and went round picking the chests on the beach (very little money in these though!). Currently my skill is 120 and I have only ever gained 1 point from the Eastern islands from doing the 'poisoned chest'.

-------

You see it can be done, just not as quickly, but more profitably. Now just to find some easy nearby Worn Junkboxes . . .

Hope that is of use to another Dark Elf

PS: Is there a addon/can I set a Macro to just automatically take everything when I pick a pocket without moving the mouse?

I used Ratchet's beached ship, which is just North, I think, of ratchet. A bunch of human NPCs are camped around it, but jump on the ship. Go to the floor below. There are like, 8 locked boxes. They can take you to 100 roughly before going gray. Then go downstairs, and there is another box, that is lonely. Use your lockpick icon deal and then click the chest. It took me to 115(My cap at the time)

100-175 on the chests near ratched? NO WAY. They are grey to me at 130.

Went to Wetlands and dicovered that most of the battered footlockers in the Murloc camps were red to me at a skill of about 80 so I have been on the hunt for boxes to lock pick. I went to Ashenvale and opened the boxes scattered around Zoram Strand (while trying to avoid anyone with a red name above their head on my PvP realm). I got to 98, went back to Wetlands and found the boxes were still red to me.

Reading this thread point out that I could still open the Redridge practice boxes so I did that until 100 (Green) then moved on to the boxes in Lake Everstill. These are yellow at 100 and still yellow at 113 which is my current skill. A note for finding these boxes - cross the bridge from Redridge and turn left. Enter the water and look around in the shallow water and on the sides of the deeper section. You wont need to fight murlocs so stay away from them but do watch out for the elite Lake Thresher.

I'm off to Wetlands this afternoon and I hope I can now fight murlocs AND open boxes at the same time!

ATTN hord Rouges lockpicking 150-175 : in Desolace, on the Sar'theris strand in Ethel Rethor(north of the village), there are waterlogged footlockers in the water along the beach. There are slitherblade naga in the area 32-34, and the boxes are orange at 150. enjoy.
