#28 Apr 26 2005 at 8:41 AM Rating: Default
ok how to pick a loackbow (if ur skill is high enough i.e. it doesnt read lock in red) the person who needs the box open should open the trade window and at the bottom there is an area that says not to be traded the box should be placed into the window then u click the lock picking button the action cursor(glowing hand) apears and u click the locked box whala.. now carrying boxes let me explain this u can not pick up a chest u find and run off with it and if u can let me know how boys i still haent figured it out the boxes they refer to are boxes that drop off npc's and are called Lockboxes notice the difference (lockbox as apose to chest or footlocker) always glad to help boys and girls

Also, in tanaris there are dented lockboxes that are red to me (lvl 178 lp) What lvl are they? And are they a viable way to skill up?

Those are meant for rogues to go and lvl up LP.. at ur lvl lock picking u could try the ones in Badlands.. in Angor Fortress.. If u talk to ur rogue trainer they should point u in the right direction.

Except.. when i was at 173 LP.. they told me to go to the Angor Fortress to lvl up my LP.. but when i got to the Dented locked boxes.. they were red to me. At 175 u are able to open up Sturdy Junkboxes and Steel.. maybe since i was so close to 175 the trainers sent me to a area that i wasnt ready for. *shrugs* i havent gone back to see if i can open it.. but its not too hard to get to.. i just stealthed all the way to the bottom cuz i was too lazy to kill all the lvl 30ish mobs :P

The practice chests are red from skill 1-40, yellow from 41-55, green 55-105 (although skill-ups get rare after about 90) and Lucius Lockbox goes green at 75 or so.

I have the skill at 1 but for me wasn't red :)

My skill is at 161. I went to Desolace last night and hunted around the bottom of the sea found the boxes and they were all red. What's funny is the doors in scarlet monastery are green to me. Boxes in Hillsbrad are green to me, when I find one that is. So something is a little off in this guide cause I shouldn't be able to pick the doors at SM till 175 right? Yet theyre green now, but I really can't get to 180 b/c boxes are red in desolace (which is where I was told to go -- or Angor fortress in Badlands). An green ones give you a skillup what every 1 in 20 zillion? I don't get skillups very often from green locked boxes.

Lockpicking skill:159

The Desolace chests con orange to me at 159.

Found em at pos:40,20.

Not sure if this would be helpful or not but the Searing Gorge Gate went yellow after I dinged my LP'ing to 250. Before that it was still orange.

And as for reseting it, I ran through, picked the other end, killed a few spiders and a few close by golems, then came back and was able to skill off of it again. In one run through, I got 5 skill ups off of the doors.

The swamp of sorrows footlockers are in the lake around the temple (also known as the sunken temple of atl... whatever)

The rogue trainers tell you to go somewhere based on your characters level, not the level of lockpicking. So if you're level 40, it'll tell you to go somewhere, but if you haven't got 195 lockpicking, you might not be able to open them.

firstly thanks so much for the guide! having all the info in one place is a huge help.

I think they may have 'fixed' the SM lockpick idea though (either that or I'm doing something wrong)

I started with my picking skill at 179, stealthed up to the doors, (they con orange), got 180 on the cathedral door, 181 on the armory door, then nothing, tried from the other direction of the door, nothing, tried pickpocketting the mobs nearby (successfully) and then tried both doors again, nothing.

So I'm wondering if one of the recent patches fixed this lil glitch that we've been taking advantage of? Or am I doing something wrong?

One place I don't see mentioned is Durnholme Keep in Hillsbrad.

It is stuffed full of lockboxes in the 100-160+ range and they repop very fast. The mobs are all around 20, very well spaced and there is a vendor by the wall to sell junk to. I go back there and skill up to max when I level (which is why I don't know the max level on the boxes - some are now green, some are still orange).

I skilled up to 160 in Durnhold keep (my max at the time), just went back there to get higher.. 7 boxes with no skill up, so it looks like 160 is the max there.. very easy place to skill up that high.

I also went to the Polly box - The Jewel of the Southsea - and it is gray to lvl 169.

Thanks for all this info - it has helped a whole lot!

:)

For that tricky little dead zone between 160 and 180 I found that Gnomeregan doors work the best. The ones outside are evidentally on a timer and the ones inside can be reset but are guarded by about 6 or so mobs, at least two of which are elite. I don't know how long the timers on the outside doors are so if anyone does, kindly post.

The boxes off the shore of Desolace have been good for skilling up since 170 (maybe before, I forget) and are still yellow at 200. The boxes are spread out, but with one water breathing potion, and using sneak, I was able to get from 180 to 200 with minimal interruptions from the Naga. The trainer keeps sending me to Swamp of Sorrows, however everytime I went there other rogues were also there so the competition was strong, plus the mobs were a little harder to deal with.

Ok I'm at lockpicking 100 at the moment (Horde rogue lvl 21). I went to Durnhold keep and the lockboxes are still red to me - even though that's where my trainer sent me. I'm interested in going back and having some practice on the Polly box but I'm a bit nervous that giant parrot is going to jump me again ... or does it not spawn if you have finished the quest? Any help and hints would be appreciated :)

Thank you!

I used the two entry doors in the SM for over 20 points in a row. It’s been too long to remember exact numbers, but I used them until they turned gray. The trick I used to get the doors to work for me was to pick pocket one of the guards. The pick pocket didn’t have to be successful and I could use the same guard over and over again until someone killed him off. Doing so would allow me to pick at least one of the doors if not both of them.

If this method no longer works then Blizzard must have done something to “fix” it.

For those higher level rogues trying to raise their lock picking I would highly recommend doing a bit of killing in the Western Plague Lands. There are three fields of undead that I know of. The first two fields have undead that can be pick pocketed. There is also a town full of undead, but I preferred to ride/swim around the town and fight in the fields. I just prefer open areas where adds are less common.

The first field has undead that are about level 51 to 53. I spent a good amount of time grinding here because it was so easy. There is also a quest that involves killing in these fields for those of you who really hate killing just for mob xp. What I did was pick pocket every undead before I attacked it. I’d get from 1 to 5 silver and sometimes a potion, a rose and/or a heavy junk box.

I pinched enough junk boxes to level up my lock picking to my current level max and to keep it maxed each level. When I first started opening the boxes they were orange. They eventually turned yellow. But they didn’t turn green until I hit 300 lock picking. And perhaps it was luck, but even when the boxes were yellow I got a skill point for each and every box I opened. It proved to be a very easy way to keep my skill maxed.

no, polly doesn't spawn. the chest just dissapears and instaspawns.

HOWEVER, in conflict with the main body of the FAQ, this chest went GREY to me at 130. no where close to the promised 175.
#45 Jun 07 2005 at 1:44 AM Rating: Decent
Confirmed: Ratchet chest does not skill past a certain point, less than stated. Came with 150 and it's useless. On my way to Durnholme to test that theory.
#46 Jun 08 2005 at 8:30 AM Rating: Decent
while the polly chest in ratchet went grey at 130, the poison quest chest is still green at 150.

Did Polly chest(s) to 125.

Durnholde has 2 sets of chests. The ones that spawn down in the pit and the ones that spawn on the top tier around the pit and on the hill.

These aren't fixed spawn points. It appears that every place a syndicate mob can spawn, CAN spawn a chest. There will be 5 or 6 up at any given time (except when I've been through there recently!) - that's 5 or 6 in the pit AND 5 or 6 above.

The ones in the pit went gray on me at 160. The ones around the top were still green to me at 180 - my max at the last time I was there.

I got 181 on a steel lockbox for a dude in Org. I'll head back to see if they go above 185..

Ratchet is NOT Horde Territory. Ratchet is Neutral Territory. Always has been, likely always will be.

On a PvP server, it is fair game to all who enter as I understand it... but the town itself is neither Horde, nor Alliance ruled.

I just started my Rogue, so I'm not sure about this ship either, but you can bet that I'll be there tonight looking around! :-)

Can someone post a simple list of locked box types along with the minium LP level required to open? I've looked and looked and can't find a comprehensive list.

I'd like one so I could easily reference it when one of the "____ Box Open Plz" goes across General Chat. That way I'm sure I can open it before I reply.
