i havent played WoW. are a lot of the weapons for only a certian class? if a warlock can use a sword, will they be able to use the same swords that a warrior has for example? or only certain swords?

thanks.

There are extremely few class-specific items, and most of those have to do with class-specific quests. In practical terms, the answer to your question is yes. If you can find a sword, you can use it.

However, most of the time you'll be using staves, because those have caster stats. Your real damage is from spells, not weaponry.

While Warlocks can use swords, it isn't an innate ability which means you have to train in the skill before you can equip.

Having played the Warlock all throughout the WoW open beta, I found myself sticking to daggers for the most part, and let my pet do the rest. When you really get into playing a Warlock, you will find that you are only using melee combat 1/3 of the time.

you will have to go to the weapon master in order to learn new weapon skills. If you really want ot use swords, u should consider getting an off hand orb, or something that gives you bonuses. To be honest with you, i'm lvl 39 ATM, and i never go close combat. I DoT the enemy as much as possible(if the enemy is strong, and worth using mana on), and use shadow bolt.. some times i use wands for combat too, but they aren't always that powerfull.. I use staves mostly.. but i'm not very experiensed with locks.. then i wouldn't have been here. x)

Yes, you can use any one-handed sword.

BUT...

A weapon is only for the stats it carries (+stamina, intellect, spell power, hit, haste).

THEREFORE...

Best combination is usually a dagger and an off-hand as they carry the best stats. You MAY find a decent sword to replace the dagger (Merciless Spellblade at level 70 from PVP for example) though.

Alternative is a stave, which also carries good stats but is two-handed so is all you can carry.

Do NOT go after a weapon to use in melee - you wear cloth and only cloth and you will be torn to shreds. Just look at the stats mentioned above and make your choice based on that.

As other have said yes, and as others have said, sword is primarily for stats. Weapons in general are one of the best stat slots for warlocks. There are plenty of swords/daggers that raise Spell Damage by a significant portion, and usually have some Hit, Crit or Haste as well. What I normally do I carry the best Staff, Main Hand and Off Hand items I've found with me. This way, if I get a new Main Hand/Off Hand, I can add it's totals to the other that I have and see if it is better than my staff.

That being said, while we can equip the same swords as Warriors/Rogues, the stats on the swords they want are normally have Defense, Parry, attack power or expertise, stats we don't want at all. If you ever take a sword for it's DPS you are wrong, use your wand for DPS if you can't cast for whatever reason, but locks should not melee.

As said by others.

Can warlocks use swords > Yes, you can train to use them in Stormwind. In the building across the AH.

Warlocks can also use Staffs, Daggers, Off hand items (like Orbs and Books) and Wands for long range.

BUT, can they use ANY swords or should they use ANY swords (or daggers for that matter) > NO
Warlocks can't dual wield, so if the sword/dagger is Off-hand only, you can forget it. Staffs are 2h so that's no problem.
Orbs and Books are Off-hand only, no problem there either.
Wands, range only.

For stats, as said by Inoperante :
Stamina, Intel, Spell Power, Hit Rating (446 for a lvl 80 is the maximum)
***Spirit is mainly for Healers but Blizzard is trying to push and make Warlock/Mages/Elemental Shamies to get more Spirit then they used to.***
