I think bear mode is best for melee soloing, and it might be a good idea to train your normal form as well with some kind of weapon.

"Best" form? They're used for different situations. Druid is by nature a jack of all trades. It's more a matter of playstyle than anything else. Cat form does the most damage, bear form has the most durability, caster form has the most options and all the healing, but you're expected to be shifting around a lot. Bear mode, as Flatzen said, is useful for melee soloing because of his durability, but cat mode is also because you can avoid fights you don't want. Talents may also influence your decision; a Balance-specced druid will prefer to stay in caster form for the most part, whereas Feral Combat talents can reward using cat form, bear form, or both.

My boyfriend and I are gonna duo druid party. He'll tank in bear form while I deal damage in cat form. Sounds like a winning strategy to me. =^_^=

Just make sure he keeps his rage saved up for taunting then.

Most damage dealt = mob's current target. =)

Bear form is your primary melee form for tanking -- your "warrior" form.

Cat form is your primary form for damage output -- your "rogue" form.

In no form other than human can you cast any spells or use any potions. Usually by the time you notice it's getting critical to use a spell (such as healing), it's a wee bit to late to switch to human form to then start casting -- you're already low on hp.

Best bet is to make sure you have weapons trained in human form, it'll take some practice to figure out your "break points" for when you'll need to shift to human form but there are a couple tricks that can help.

1) Load a healing potion into your quick cast bar and be ready to click that if you need to go to human form.

Potions are NOT click, click, click style to heal yourself up. You can use 1 then there is a "cool down" type period before you can use one again. They ARE instant effect so lesser healing, early in your career, and greater ones, later on, will help out melee survival in tough situations...

2) Buff yourself before going into a tough fight -- refresh style to make sure your buffs will last the fight out... Mark and Thorns and any regen (I'll cover regrowth seperately below). Refreshing buffs may not sound like such a big deal but, even fighting lower level guys, getting an add or 2 in there towards the end of the fight can extend it longer than you initially thought it might last.

3) Cast Regrowth on yourself just before starting into combat.

You won't need the mana in animal form - you can't cast spells that way and your regen for a few seconds, at the start of the fight, can make a noticable difference.

4) Open the fight in human form usually -- wrath then Moonfire then switch to bear form for soloing.

I've soloed mobs at 17th level 4 levels higher than me with these techniques. Taking out a 21st level spider that can poison you and webs (roots) you during the fight... Pretty cool IMO.

One other thing on your illusions... You can switch forms at a full run which is pretty cool and rather handy for those "I'm dieing! Run away! Oh, run away!" gigs where that healing potion is there to click as you get out of the fight.

My advice is not to think of it in terms of "best form". Each form of the druid should be merely an extension of the druid as a whole. Clearly, you should mark the strengths and weaknesses of each form. However, I've literally used every form available to me to stay alive in a fight.

ChahDresh and Kothall have actually covered this topic pretty well, but I just wanted to point out that one shouldn't forget the benefits of "Entagling Roots".

Typically, I would "Root" a target. Then cast Moonfire for the DOT. Then, immediately Starfire until the target broke free of roots. As the target advanced, I'd stick them with Fairie Fire (Reduces Armor) Hit myself with Rejuvination (insta-cast), and switch to a feral form for melee combat. If you pay enough attention to your health and get good at your timing, you can switch back to humanoid form and cast a heal spell or drink a potion to heal yourself, and then return to feral form again.

I have been known to switch back and forth between humanoid and feral forms up to 6 times during a fight.

I cannot express enough the importance of keeping yourself buffed. You'd be absolutely amazed how much extra damage Moonfire and Thorns will do during a battle.
#8REDACTED, Posted: Feb 01 2009 at 6:19 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) Yes, I agree with the above posters. There is no "Best" form. If you are going somewhere with lot's of mobs your level, I'd use bear for the HP and Armor increase. If there are sparce amounts of mobs, use cat for the quick takedown. Happy leveling!

Holy necro bat man.

Friendly advice, don't reply to threads this old or even just a few months.

#10REDACTED, Posted: Feb 02 2009 at 5:16 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) Sometimes new players won't go back very far in the threads, not sure how long it would take to read all of Alla, so it's sometimes good that someone brings an oldie post back to the top, "refreshing" it. There's a lot of people here who have been reading the posts for a long time, but there's also a substantial number who might have missed it, either by not logging in while the post was on the first page of the forum, or they're just new to the game.

Just no.

Threads this old are *so* outdated they're bound to contain false information and misleading stuff. This thread from 2004 could be saying "Omg Feral sucks" when right now it's an incredible spec.

Dead threads should stay dead. There are Wiki's and guides that contain info often referred to and that should be sufficient.

Edit: Took this from the thread for the lulz

There's only two melee forms - cat and bear.

Cat - first rate melee dps, stealth attacks, dots and stuns - you pick a target and it dies in a flurry of teeth and claws

Bear - druid tank form so great at surviving damage but not quite as hot as a cat for single target dps, very good for AOE farming mobs though (gather up a dozen mammoths or rhinos and swipe away)

To answer the OP's message, I believe 4 years ago you druids bit at melee (pun not intended), so go Resto for Innervate. It's all druids are used for in 2004. Leveling up you can do whatever you want, but feral is probably easiest. Although your talent tree isn't that good.
