Meanwhile I am playing through Pokemon X for the first time, mowing through trainer after trainer, bored out of my mind.
Look up the Nuzlocke challenge and apply the rules to your game.
Meh. It's not quite the same when you make the rules yourself. Also, Nuzlocke doesn't help much for challenge when my pokemon never faint and I don't capture any wild pokemon for reasons outside of filling my pokedex. X/Y practically hands you a full set of some of the best/strongest pokemon in the game. Without using any pokeballs, I have been given Lucario (who can transform into Mega-Lucario), two starters, Lapras, and a choice between two fairly formidable fossils very early on. They even made it incredibly easy to get Snorlax from nearly the start of the game. Snorlax and Pidgeot are the only two I use that I actually had to catch.
I've already been stopping myself from switching out in the middle of battle or using items. I suppose it will boil down the same way an MMO would-- with the real challenge coming at the end with PvP. By that time I'll be moving all my previous game teams and raising a veritable army of pokemon with choice IVs and movesets to use against other players.
