Story-wise, play them in order. Gameplay wise, Dead Space is RE1, and DS2 is RE4.

Everything I've heard (I've got about halfway through 1 before I lost my save and stopped) suggests that they're close enough in quality that you should go in chronological order. Some prefer one or the other, but there isn't a whole lot of consensus. I suspect I'd prefer 1, myself.
But you should really play Hotline Miami first.

Oh, and apparently you want to turn off the in-game v-sync in DS1, and instead force it through your hardware if you want to enable it.

Good to know. I have a 360 controller for some PC games although I prefer KB/M. But I'll try both or something and decide where I'm comfortable. If KB/M sucks at least I'll know why and what to do about it beyond "ragequit".

Make sure you use a mouse for the turret sections of DS1, it's a lot easier that way.

I didn't find them difficult on PS3 at all, except when trying for the achievements.
Deadlight was one of my accidental drunken buys. I probably won't like it.

I hear that the narration is particularly dreadful and the puzzles are dumb, but there's a lot of praise for the visuals, so I'm hoping I can just eke some enjoyment out of them
the visuals do look pretty but visuals are actually what I care about least in games.
Looking at that Microsoft pack (Deadlight, Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet, Mark of the Ninja, Toy Soldiers, Iron Brigade) I'm skeptical that I'll like any of them.

If you can't enjoy Mark of the Ninja, I'll be quite disappointed. It topped my GOTY voting in quite a few categories.
One of 2012's best.

Tell whoever on "your" site gave Tomb Raider a 93 to start capping their markers before writing reviews. It's a solid, fun game but it ain't a 93 game.

Deadlight's neat. I think I got it for less than $5, definitely worth it. It's kind of a zombie platformer/puzzle game.

Yeah, I'll probably try it. I just suck at using controllers these days. Too many toggles and switches and I wind up pressing the right trigger on accident just by holding the controller or trying to figure out what the hell the L3 button is or staring at it during a QTE saying "Now which of you is the red button?"

.S'all in what you're used to, I suppose. I tried to play Battlefield 3 with KB & M for a few rounds last week, and it was an unmitigated disaster.
You know those scenes in Looney Tunes where a character would get the jump on another one with a gun, then proceed to accidentally shoot around them in a complete silhouette? That's what I would do in BF3, except it would end with me getting knifed.
The prompts don't change for controller, either, so whenever it says "Press E to change kits", I get to go through a frantic series of incorrect button presses to figure out what it corresponds to. My character knifes, jumps, shoots, and crouches until he picks up the thing I want. I must look like a spaz.

I'll pretty much play any PC game that has native controller support with a controller. I've tried playing some games without native support (here's looking at you, Mass Effect) by using a third party program to map keypresses to the controller, and usually it's a massive failing on my part.
I don't play competitive FPS so it's never really been an issue for me. So I can't get headshots as quickly as my cohorts in Borderlands. It doesn't take away from my enjoyment of the game.
yeah I find it difficult to enjoy games fully if they don't have controller support. If EQ2 had controller support I'd play it a lot more... and guildwars also didn't get the chance that it would have otherwise if it had it.
It's part of what makes me a SE mmo-er for life.

TERA has controller support
What's using a controller like in TERA? I've heard rumblings they don't work so well (from quality sources like forums and global chat, of course 
), but I've never tried myself.
