Something weird happened to me just now.
Got an email from ArenaNet last night saying someone was trying to reset my password for my Guild Wars (1) account. The mail told me to ignore it if I wasn't the one trying to retrieve it. Then just now I got an email from ArenaNet saying someone had accessed my Guild Wars 2 account from a different country than I normally log in from.
I find this odd, primarily because
I don't recall ever creating a Guild Wars 2 account. I checked and double-checked the links and sender. Seems legit.
Quote:
Dear Guild Wars 2 Player,
We have observed a suspicious login to your Guild Wars 2 account from a different country than you normally play from. We believe your account has been accessed by hackers who have harvested lists of account names and passwords from other games and web sites and are systematically typing them into Guild Wars 2 looking for matches.
If you can still access your account, take steps immediately to prevent further intrusion. We recommend that you create a new email address to use solely for your Guild Wars 2 account. And it's vitally important that you use a strong, unique password for Guild Wars 2 that you've never used anywhere else. Make sure your Guild Wars 2 account name and password are unique!
If you can't access your account, contact our customer support team and we'll help you restore access.
See our blog post on this topic for more tips on securing your account.
Thank you,
The Guild Wars 2 Team

Does anyone know if ArenaNet created GW2 accounts for those of us who have GW accounts? That would explain why someone was trying to gain access to my GW account and ArenaNet logging it as a breach on my GW2 account (which I don't have). The other alternative is that someone created an account using my email address, somehow managed to verify the account without me ever seeing the verification email, then proceeded to play GW2 from one country before playing it from another, triggering the "wait a minute..." email from ArenaNet.
Just to summarize, I have a Guild Wars account, but I have never set up a Guild Wars 2 account. I have never played Guild Wars 2. I don't even have the client on my computer.
What gives? My Guild Wars account has been inactive for five or six years, so I don't care if someone gained access to it (I've changed my passwords five times over since then). I'm just curious how someone could gain access to an account that doesn't exist and why ArenaNet believes it to be mine. Does it mean I've got a GW2 account running somewhere? That'd be nice.
Edit: Breaking the links so people don't click them, just in case there's dirt at the other end (they seem to lead to the official website, though).
