Awwww man, if our microwave hadn't crashed and burned over the weekend, I'd go get a PS3 today.

(We're kicking ourselves for not paying the extra $100 for a warranty at the point of sale on the microwave, and will rectify that much this afternoon, especially since we now have to pay for removal of the old one AND installation of the new one. My husband and I are both too technically inept to install a basic appliance... it was Lahurah who installed it the first time, and it took all three of us to lift it in place above the range. Making the store install it also means if they accidentally drop it on the stove, they're the ones on the hook for replacing a $500 range top on top of a $300 microwave.)

I'm on the fence for the first time ever regarding picking up a new system. It's not necessary the Vita's fault for my indecision either. I'm of the mixed belief that portable handhelds like the 3DS and Vita are no longer feasible because of the tablets and smart phone apps.

The Vita is targeting the hardcore demographic, same as the PSP. While I love the PSP, it never sold worth a damn and that concerns me. Again, there is not a damn thing wrong with the Vita. I just think handhelds are on the way out for the hardcore market. I'm predicting the kids will keep the 3DS alive now that it's dropped to a decent price. However, the Vita is a hardcore uber portable and I can't say I know of anyone my age that would bring one along when they can just mess with their phones if were on the road or whatever.

Uncharted Vita is total sex though. I'm so hoping that I'm wrong about my gut feelings.

I've yet to see a tablet or smartphone app that can touch a full game on a dedicated gaming machine. Personally, I just don't game on the go, so a handheld isn't really something that I need. I wold love to play me some Uncharted though.

That's true, but at the same time those games cost $1-2. For the cost of a single game on a handheld console, you can get 15-30 games on a phone or tablet.

However, I don't think this generation is the death of handheld consoles. The Vita is getting A LOT of investment from Sony--they seem to be going all out to provide quality features and quality games. And the fact that you can buy a 3G version to take advantage of web features helps it in this new market.

That, and if I'm on the go I have the whole internet at my fingertips, and that is often just as entertaining as a game if not more so.

Hopefully the Vita joystick nub thingies are a lot better than PSP's.

Bubble Pop is my go-to phone game. Brainless and it was free.

If I'm on a handheld, though, it's gonna be during things like road trips, or days I'm too sick to get out of bed (haven't had one of those in a few years, thankfully.) Bubble Pop gets stale after about ten minutes. I can spend quite a few hours of quality time with a good handheld game.

All good responses as why Vita can be a success. I'm still skeptical though because of the direction of the electronic industry. Tablets have become all the rage lately for some reason and while I don't see smart phones or tablets replacing the Vita in terms of quality of games, I don't see much use for Vita's 3G option outside of gaming reasons. The original PSP is still a niche handheld and tablets/smart phones blown the doors off units sold. Again, I'd be stupid to argue the power or the appeal of the Vita, I'm just wondering if enough people will pick it up. I'm on the fence for picking it up myself because I doubt I'd use it for very much. Honestly I'd probably use it more for a PS3 controller than games on the PSP or Vita.

So I have to wonder if it's just me based the responses so far. I've had tons of handhelds going back to the Tiger handhelds, the original Gameboy, and up to the DS Lite/PSP systems. I don't get much use out of my handhelds right now and it's not because there isn't any games for them.

Basically I'm looking for an excuse to buy it. Uncharted alone makes me want to pick it up. Anyone else in my boots or am I all by myself here?

Reminds me of Dreamcast's Record of Lodoss War*, which was fun as all hell.

Yes, I'm aware it was a Diablo clone.

It's an alternative to the 3DS, and I suspect a lot of people who purposely avoided the 3DS are going to snag a Vita as their next handheld. The shortcomings of the 3DS are exactly what I was talking about in regards to time - if I'm on a handheld, I'm going to be on it for the long hours. I don't see much point in a handheld device that causes eyestrain to the point where you can only play it for an hour at a time without a headache. It won't help me one bit on our next twelve hour drive to Canada.

I almost have trouble imagining the Vita as an alternative to a 3DS--they seem like completely different things to me. That's probably unfair, but maybe not. The Vita's more of a multimedia device.

Except it's not just media, you'll also be able to access things like Skype off of it. Definitely not bad features to have.

I think the Vita's still in the running as a result. There are still enough people looking for handheld systems to be interested by it's gaming-centric features, and enough additional content to get the people on the fence interested as well. The 3DS focused on a gimmick (and, imo, one most people don't care about yet) to try and sway people to it. It was a bad call.

Hopefully, Sony won't make the same mistake.

Bump!

I thought about starting a new thread, but I think this is a little more appropriate.

I have decided not to buy a Vita, at least for now. They have a solid lineup of games, which is huge, but I have 2 problems that should be fixed with time.

1. The screen has a huge amount of glare, making it next to impossible to play outside. I don't know why they did this, but what's the point of having a handheld system that's useless outdoors? They need to fix this.
2. Price. Sorry, but I can't justify $300 for a handheld.

Anyone out there buying one?

I'm not very fond of it's tendency to spy on it's customers.

Fair ball. I'm not too concerned about that; I don't plan on pirating games.

The "expensive, proprietary memory" thing has turned me off a bit, but I also got a Kindle Fire for Christmas which is satisfying my need for something to while away the commuting hours. But I'm still keeping an eye on the Vita, so we'll see a little after the release.

It's been confirmed that the U.S. 3G Vitas will be carrier locked to AT&T, looks like it's WiFi only for me.

If I was going to get one, I never really considered the 3G anyways.

I'll likely wait for the price to drop before getting one, as it's a little pricy for me at the moment.

Does it use the sony memory sticks? It's the same with PSP but it still sucks ballz....

Anyway I won't be getting one until the price drops, and with how much things change and how quickly, I'd rather wait a generation or two till the technology stabilizes

Some sort of new Sony format. I'm not entirely sure of the specifics, but I recall something of that sort. I know that it's proprietary, and that it's overpriced for memory, though.

also this... ugh. Sorry not interested in the Vita at all till this is fixed:

Quote:
There's no more confusion about whether or not the PS Vita will run PSOne Classics and other "Game Archives" games (that's the umbrella term used in Japan for Sony's retro games -- PSOne and PC Engine/Turbografx-16, along with, presumably, PS2) at launch. Unfortunately, the answer to that lingering question is a firm, and bewildering, no.

The Japanese Vita FAQ, which initially noted that the Vita will play all downloadable PSP games except for Archives releases, cemented that in an answer to the direct question of whether or not the device will support old downoaded games. According to the FAQ, Game Archives games will not be compatible with the device at launch. "Plans for future measures will be announced shortly," the (Google-translated) FAQ notes.

http://www.joystiq.com/2011/11/28/psone-classics-and-other-game-archives-wont-work-on-vita-at-lau/

I will get a Vita only if it can play ALL of the games I've already bought as downloads AND only if it will play PS2 classics as well. Until that happens, ff that.
