The question should be: How many consoles do you really need?
All of 'em!

I'm just sayin', as far as "old" data mediums are concerned, a new system with DVD playback is just an extra cost when now even toasters play DVDs.

Well, yeah, I don't necessarily disagree with you. Not much of a console player, so usually I'm limited to two DVD players: one in my computer and one by the TV. Technically, even that's one too many as I could just connect my TV to my computer (which is almost always on, anyway).

But hey, welcome to the 21st century.

*grumble* Stupid grammar *grumble*

Not to mention that outrageously expensive HDMI cable.

I think he was looking at this one.

The markups on HDMI cables and surge protectors are unconscionable. Best Buy tricked my dad into paying around $200 twice for HDTV accessories that ran me about $10 total.

People think that because they just bought a $2000 TV that they need a $200 cable, and manufacturers exploit the hell out of it. Anyone who tells you they can see a difference between a $500 cable and a $5 cable is full of crap. Digital signals don't suffer from interference the way analog signals do, it's an all or nothing type of thing. The only time the build quality of the cable tends to cause problems is when you get into the 30+ meter range.

Hmm, thanks, I'll have to remember this. Yes, I was talking about from a local retailer, not online, which is apparently the only place mark ups occur. Plus I was only looking when my parents bought their first HDTV so I hadn't really looked into HDMI cables much.

Yeah, cable prices are absurd in stores.

That's their entire business model. Sell accessories and service plans.

I laughed when the guy at best buy tried to sell me $170 worth of accessories for my free smartphone.

I don't think I was able to keep a straight face as the kid at Best Buy tried to sell me on their HDMI cables. "You'll see a worse quality image if you don't get them! Just look at these graphs!"

It's not even a selling feature anymore. It made sense with the PS2 and PS3, because as both were being released DVD and blu-ray players were relatively new, and so therefore it was fairly likely that a person purchasing one would not otherwise have a player (at least for that television).

Now though, it's just a redundancy.

I agree. There's no need for it. Besides, I would much rather have an actual player, I tend to play one game at a time (per system) and I'm too lazy to change out discs. Also, although I haven't tried the PS3 blu-ray yet, I didn't like the PS2 DVD player.
