Surprised there isn't a thread about this yet. Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim has been announced to be released 11-11-11. Anyone else excited?

I was more interested in Mass Effect 3. Too bad it's a year away yet. I just hope they lay off the mind numbingly boring mining crap.

Sometimes I wonder why they put some of these previews up. Like that one from Guillermo del Toro, "Insane". Coming 2013. Like I really care about a game right now that won't be coming out for over two years (probably closer to 3).

The point isn't to make you care a ton now, the point is to set a base that they can build upon up until the release, and it is actually a really smart move. Which do you care more about:

-The game that you've been hearing about for a year and is finally getting released?
-The game that you just now saw the trailer for and it comes out in a month?

And early announcements lead to more effective viral advertisements, which only succeed if your audience connects them to the product.

The latter option can certainly still be extremely effective, if the game is epic enough. But releasing info earlier allows the studio to rely less on absolutely stunning potential buyers with their first trailers and ads. Every time you learn more, you get more excited. Which increases your likelihood of buying it (and at top dollar, rather than waiting a year for the price to drop). The more people buy a game at release, the stronger word of mouth becomes and the more a company will sell overall.

Assuming the game is good. It can backfire pretty heavily. The more hype, the more to live up to. Many games were decent, but the hype demanded they be game of the year material, and they were crushed when they couldn't live up to that.

True, but over-hype is only a significant risk for those that are immersed in gaming culture, which is a big minority, and they aren't the target of most advertising campaigns, as companies now need to bring in more casual gamers to make money.

The biggest risk with hype is probably with gaming reviews. But a good reviewer is going to look at how good a system is, not how good it is in regards to the hype. But, frankly, reviews are probably still a big reason to go ahead and hype the game. The more the public is expecting a game, the more likely it will be reviewed by gaming mags and websites and the more likely it is that the casual gamers will bother reading that review.

It's a calculated risk that's probably smartest for a company considering their target audience is no longer the dedicated gamer.

New trailer out with some actual game play. It looks like they've gone with a darker more realistic look for the world this time around. It's probably up on Youtube, but you can download an HD version over at The official site. It's pretty much eye candy and doesn't show much in the way of game mechanics. Last month's Game Informer had a pretty decent preview though. It's worth a read if you can get your hands on a copy.

all that footage from the trailer is supposably from the 360 version.

Just watched the new trailer. The engine looks quite nice. I hadn't been paying attention to the game before, but it's on my radar now.

If Oblivion was any tell, I'll be buying this when it comes out and will proceed to have no life for months afterwards.
