The companion system has been completely scrapped. You can even solo most of the PvE game content if you want, as in, you don't even need to join a team. Of course, most dungeons will probably not be soloable... apart from some dungeons tied to your personal storyline, it seems.
Anyway, they scrapped it for the reason it would cause a lot of lag on the servers, plus it's kind of an excess having a hero/henchmen running all the time besides you. It just wouldn't be easy to balance, plus imagine the over-crowded areas?
