I have no plans to try any other mmo atm... but I have to say storytelling wise... what can a game based on an existing lore offer to me in terms of story? I mean - I've read lord of the rings etc... so what exactly can I hope to be stunned with in LOTRO?
I personally prefer to encounter a new story... not to rehash an old one...
If you're serious about your LoTRO question, the vast majority of the leveling-up quests are vague references to the books at best, but most are typical MMO style quests (My kids are hungry, go get me 10 boar haunches). The epic (main story) quests roughly follow the fellowships journey to Moria. After Moria things get vague again (because Turbine became more interested in subscription number than staying true to LoTR) and that's when I quit.
Turbine only has access to the LoTR books and The Hobbit, and zero access to anything else (like The Silmarilon). This means that they hands are tied with certain content.
In summary, if you're a Tolkien expert, you'll be disgusted with LoTRO (ordinary people have "magic" for example). But if you just watched the movies and thought they were cool, you'd probably like LoTRO.
