Possible concern for European PlayersFollow

#1 Jul 15 2010 at 3:55 PM Rating: Decent
Recently, Bluehole Studio announced a partnership with Frogster to publish TERA in Europe.
What exactly does this mean? Frogster will create, maintain, and manage the European servers.Inevitably, Bluehole Studio was going to make some sort of connection with a European based server host, but why Frogster?

This company currently has a poor reputation with its 4 f2p (free to play) MMORPGS. Players experience little to no customer support, and 300+ ms while in-game. I have gone through a couple of the forums of their f2p content, and players are saying that instead of fixing issues within the game, they are simply banning the players that were victimized of the glitches. For example, the ''item shops'' in which you spend real money would not function properly, yet they take the players money without refunds. The major concern is that Frogster will be unable to handle such a massive amount of players, based on their current track record.

Frogster will handle European customer service

This concerns me. Frogsters staff may not be large enough to handle such a massive amount of players. If they currently cannot keep their current f2p games under control, how will they manage with a mainstream title attracting a large European fanbase?

Frogster hosting may have the following issues/concerns:
-Censoring due to German Publishers and Laws (frogster is a german company, located in berlin)
-Server Lag
-Horrible if any Customer Support and Service
-Delayed Patches
-Lack of GMs which don't speak English
-Account security issues, as well as payment method security
-Hostile Customer Support
-Random Bans for anyone
-No Stance against Bots and Gold farmers
-possible credit card fraud

With all of these speculation being brought to Frogster and Bluehole, Scapes has replied with a answers to a few of these questions.

Found Here, you can see that the only thing that is now a fact is that players within Germany will have a censored version of the game.

This information should address most of the questions we’ve seen asked on the forums.

However it did not. Many variables are still in the equation. Hopefully BH studio will be willing to answer more information before a major European fanbase decides not to play Tera. Petitioners are already raving through the tera-online forums announcing that they will either connect to the North American servers, or not play at all.

It is still too early to say whether or not Frogster will float or sink, but keep an eye out for any information regarding this subject. Unless Scapes or another staff member states some information, try not to jump to any conclusions. People change, and maybe this is just a step in the right direction for Frogster to get out of its bad reputation. Hopefully they will surprise us, and live up to Bluehole and En Masse's expectations.

I know a lot of people who basically decided to go the NA servers upon hearing this news. so a main question for them is if EU people will be allowed to play on NA servers.

Apparently not.

European servers and will be unable to access the North American servers.

Will IP blocking be a concern though? Meaning European customers are unable to connect to the NA servers, regardless of having a NA version of the game.

that's what I was referring to. many EU people are expressing an interest in buying the NA version to play on NA servers, so they're curious as to whether there will be ip blocking/region restrictions.

I have to speak up on this, as I am one of the players of Runes of Magic. Yes, there are some bugs but I have truly not seen very many. Yes, it may take 12 to 24 hours to get a response from Customer Support, but that is true of almost all games.

When I have needed Customer Support they have been right there and on the spot, including problems with the Item Shop. More than once I have bought diamonds and accidentally assigned them to the wrong server. Each time they have quickly and without fuss moved the diamonds to the correct server for me.

At launch there was a real issue with RMT ads in-game. They quickly added a "block player" click so we could easily block these morons. With the ease of creating new accounts it will be almost impossible to prevent them totally. I have never seen a bot in RoM and have only twice seen a player that I was "pretty certain" was gold-farming. I reported them and never saw them again.

The Item Shop sells stuff like mounts, exp potions, and gems that can improve your weapons, all of which can be obtained in-game through quests or gold. They do NOT sell weapons or armor for cash. Cash can speed up your levelling but it does not make you a better player or give any real advantages. It is 100% possible to reach max level without ever spending a penny, it will just take a little longer.

Since release Frogster has released two excellent content expansions. That's TWO in the first year!

I am in NA, not EU, but if I was I would be excited to see Frogster involved in TERA.

Opinions can be quite mixed especially if you take a look at the other sites and forums on the net on this topic. I think the same thing can be the case with many games. Mixed experiences and resulting opinions. Some people experienced either personally, through friends, or through publicized disputes and tickets bad things, while people who never ran into problems would think the company is great. It's entirely possible that a company's service isn't applied universally to the entire player base and it seems to be the case here as I don't think it's likely that 20k+ posts floating around are all solely for the sake of slandering a company without any merit. I'm not calling the company bad, but when that many people speak up, they must have done something wrong at some point in at least one aspect.

I hope not. We have euro players in our guild that plan on playing with us.
I hope they keep in mind the many guilds whom are international.

As long as they don't region/ip block or ban EU players on NA servers, it should be fine. Well, really, as long as they don't have a ban policy. Region/ip blocks are often bypassed by using routing/tunneling services to play on other region games if people really want to play internationally. So if there's no ban policy and people can pick up a copy of the NA version, it should be good. I know this is currently a major concern for a lot of international players that hasn't been answered directly.
