Try out Lost Odyssey. It's as close as you'll get to a real turn based RPG with modern day graphics.

I like the new approaches to turn based combat. FFXII could have been great, but the gambit system made it so easy to just put it on, then go afk. Only had to pay attention on a handful of bosses.

I couldn't imagine this game if you had to put in commands for all members while switching paradigms. I wish that even if your leader dies the other characters could revive him/her, like in Infinite Undiscovery.

They're pretty non-commital about expansions or DLC, but this game seems to beg for DLC. Especially if you can keep playing after the main story is over. I like the idea of being able to max out my characters even after I've completed the main story line.

DLC would be cool. I'd probably buy it if there was.

I kind of wish they had put more into the weapon upgrade process than just 3 stages with about 200ish levels to go through. It was a good idea too bad they didn't develop it more.

Just be grateful that they didn't use the Dynamis/Mythic weapon upgrade system from FFXI. Would have been cool if they used the Item World concept from Disgaea though.

After 26 hours of gameplay, I finally made it past chapter 10 early yesterday. I took a small detour during chapters 9 and 10 to get enough points to max out my Crystarium.

Upon seeing Gran Pulse, and that giant rock/magma creature pick up one of the Dinosaurs, who are huge to me yet smaller than this things hands, and eat it... I can't help but hope I never fight one of them. The dinosaur was enough to instantly kill all my characters in a single shot. I can't imagine doing much better against something that big.

It seems to me that the Datalog reveals some pretty huge story elements that aren't stated throughout the dialog of cutscenes and storyline. Or at least, not during the time which the Datalog reveals them, maybe later on it does. I make it a habit of reading the Events, People, and Places info any time there is new stuff. One caught me by surprise just recently. Reading it made me think "W.T.F. Why wasn't this mentioned by any of the characters during the cutscenes I just watched, that's a pretty big piece of information."

Good to know, I will have to go back through the datalog and see what is in there.

The titan that eats the Adamantoise isn't available to fight or anything. It's part of a mission later in the game, but you don't do anything for it really. Maybe it'll be added in some DLC later.

I don't know... granted I haven't played 13 yet, but 9 is still my favorite FF game (probably in part because it was the first I played) and I don't care for the battle system. I absolutely love the story, and I love how each character has a specific role, but the trance system sucks compared to other overdrive modes. It's really my only complaint about the game at all, but is rather annoying once you've played 7 or 10 where you can save your overdrives and use them whenever you want instead of being forced to use them whenever the gauge is full.

Or was there something else you liked about FF9 that you want to see implemented in future games?

Chapter 11 is awful grindy. Or maybe its because I found a little area where I can rake in like 14000~ish CP per like five~ten minutes. I'm sure its unnecessary, but I'm pretty **** about leveling as it is, from years of abuse role playing games.

Sazh can do no wrong, except naming his kid. Seriously.

Ever since reaching chapter 11, all I've done is grind to get more CP.

I am really glad there is no real penalty for dying. The enemies are so random as far as difficulty goes. Behemoths will completely own me, as will the Adamantoise. Right now I can just fight the wolves, small flans, and the Goblin things. But I have to kill the Flans before they merge, or else the result is a mob that spams 400-500 AoE Damage attacks. My healers can't heal if they keep getting interrupted.

I found an area near the second Cei'th stone's Mark that had two or three wolve packs and a group of Goblins dancing around a treasure check. It's worth about 6,000 CP all together, and fight them all again and again.

There's an area into the next story-area where a giant wolf and a Behemoth are fighting each other. Also, there is a save point just before that, and an area off the cliff you can jump down has a bunch of easy to pre-emp strike wolfs and a giant wolf as well. Just run around that circuit and its 14k CP per five minutes. Just Delta (COM+SEN+RAV) the wolves at the bottom of the cliff, and Relentless (RAV+RAV+COM) the giant wolf/behemoth and its easy. Once they're staggered you can Aggressive (COM+COM+RAV) them to kill 'em faster depending on how you've been leveling your characters. If the behemoth gets a chance to change, you can still win but it'll take more time, but he rarely does if you can just zerg him. Easiest CP evar. And that's just after getting there, so anyone can really do it.

Even though I'm not his their biggest fan, my team is Lightning, Hope, and Fang. I might put some points into Sazh's Healing tree and get rid of the emo kid, but damn, he has such a high Magic Rating its tough on my ol' min/maxing heart.

It's ok once you get the enhances healing staff for Vanille she out cures Hope easily magic or no. Sazh is awesome cus he gets haste first and it is easily the best buff in the game and makes your ATB charge 50% faster. That being said the best farming for CP is off the Ochu in the small area you can jump up to on a chocobo that has just a few plant monsters and a cactaur, the Ochu has a smal respawn area and dies in 2-3 minutes for 13300 CP you can easily hit 500-700k CP per hour if you grind it out hard. I tend to use Lightning, Vanille and Sazh with Hero's Charge (COM/MED/SYN)*2, Diversity (COM/MED/RAV)*2 and Relentless Assault (COM/RAV/RAV)*2. Why two each you ask, well if you switch Paradigms every second attack round your ATB gauge starts full for all characters after the switch effectively allowing you to attack with the equivalent of 33% haste maximizing the number of attacks and cures you can toss out/time.

I never did use Sazh much. He does get Haste the quickest which is good, but his stats are mediocre at best. He doesn't really excel at anything so I usually just leave him in reserve unless I really need haste (so far haven't direly needed it yet).

I got to chapter 11, died 5 times in a row trying to take down the 3 wolves & the behemouth, & gave FFXIII a break in favor of Dragon Age: Awakenings for the time being.

Heave one shots everyone but my Sentinal, but only when the Sentinal bothers to guard. Otherwise they get pwned too.

Sazh comes off to me as a middle of the road type of guy, which I think is great to have. Also, I personally feel like he has the best skills for the Synergist class since not only does he get haste, bravery and faith early in, but he also gets enspells and later on protect and shell.

As far as CP grinding goes what I do is go to Gran Pulse and fight where that giant wolf thing and the behemoth are fighting. I have Lighting, Sazh and Hope equipped as Commando, Ravager and Ravager. No matter how you enter this battle you will always get a preemptive strike. Using Lighting, I will first attack the giant wolf ONE time, cancelling out the rest of the attacks with B or sometimes Y, which is enough to put the wolf into stagger. It's important to attack the wolf first because if you don't the Behemoth will stand up and regain all of its life. After attacking the wolf I attack the Behemoth until its dead (the first hit should also put the behemoth into stagger) then I finish off the wolf.

On average I can finish the battle in 18 seconds and rake in 6,600 CP per fight. Once the fight is done I just go around the corner and come right back and the two mobs have respawned.

I was forced to grind right before Vanille's Eidolon fight. I kept dying, so I had to go back a little bit and grind. There was a single Rust Pudding on that gave 1470 CP, and died in 10-20 seconds, and respawned easily by jogging about 15 seconds away. Overall I was able to get about 15,000CP every 8-10 minutes. Once I leveled up my Cyrstarium a bit, Vanille's Eidolon went down pretty easily.

I went with emoboy too but the main reason I chose him was as a RAV, not as a MED.

There is so much role switching in these fights that I find I have to go with the ones who best fit what I'm trying to do while still being very good at the alternate roles they may need to fill.

That, for me, means Hope (even if I intentionally let him die some fights) for his insane magic rating and RAV skills. He's also a very good MED and as SYN.. well.. he doesn't have Haste but he's got Protect and Shell.

I prefer Vanille's SAB to that of Fang's. I prefer Sazh's SYN to that of Hope's but I guess this game is all about compromise and trying to create the best all around group.

Now, this isn't carved in stone. I may come across enemies later that make me rethink everything and conclude that Vanille's better healing is more important than Hope's damage or any number of other reasons to change up members of a party.

The only character I haven't been able to find much use for so far is Snow. He's got some insane HP and is probably the best SEN but he still seems so lacking as COM or RAV that I just can't justify using him when Fang has been able to pull SEN off and is also an amazing COM.

I tried several time and no matter what I do, at some point the behemot turns around and one-shot my party leader. It will fight the wolf without paying attention to me but it's inevitable that at some point he will turn around and kill me and he never hits my other party members, always my leader. I have tried maybe 6-7 times and it happened every single time just the way I described. Even staggered it changes form turns around and bam!

So my question... what the hell am I doing wrong? Anything I am missing?

Zerg the hell out of it. RAV+RAV+COM. Its a shame that if you have two COMs that they each take a different target, but two RAVS+COM all gang on one target. Just unload on it as fast as possible. Usually the giant wolf just stands there looking like a goof staring at the Behemoth in the sky.

I'd say there is a degree of luck, but I've done it for over an hour straight with maybe two mishaps and having to restart. Name of the game is speed.

I guess my other question should be: did you finish the game and just trying to max out your character or you did this at the beginning of chapter 11? Cause I do zerg it with relentless assault but I don't do enough damage to kill it before the stagger effect wears off and then bam!
And I swear it did change form and killed me within a few second of being staggered once or twice. Kinda strange also that he will always target my leader with his sunder move, never the wolf or my other party member. Anyways I decided to keep on going with the story so I might come back later to kick his *** just for good measure.

Nope, pretty early on. I had taken a little time to get the Role crystal finished off on my COM, SEN, and RAV, though. Using Lightning's Axis Blade with the Whistlewind accessory, Fang's Gae Bolg, and EmogitHope's Hawkeye, with no real upgrades. Like maybe to level five or six each weapon. I've been slacking.

This game definitely is not kind to those who like to explore every nook and cranny.

I remember, after I passed the Behemoth and Large Wolf fighting, and entered the start of the path to Oerba, I took a small dead end branch path before reaching a destination. I like to explore and get as much as I can. Well, I hit reached the dead end. The doors open and a huge robot mining machine, like the one Hope likes to hop on and ride, attacks me. 1.5 million HP, annihilates my entire part within seconds with a flame thrower attack.

Explore, but don't go too far!
