I will travel across the land, searching far and wide...
Each Pokémon, to understand, the power that's inside....

(Goddamn, I can't believe I remember the entire song. I could keep going.)

Whenever I see the words to that song now, I always think of the end of There Will Be BRAWL episode 9... Smiley: frown

Then again, I never liked that anime much. I love the Pokemon Special manga though.

I tend to have one main tank Pokemon and a party of Pickup Pokemon... and I put Exp Share on one of them at a time for 10 levels until they are picking up Rare Candy and and other goodies fairly often.

I don't play seriously though... and I don't have the patience to EV my Pokemon... which is funny since I took the time to catch a dozen Feebas. (To be fair, it was in Platinum... I don't think I'd have found them in Ruby.)

I pretty much make a team of pokémon that I think are cool (don't start about the Beautifly thing) and pretty much keep everything levelled across the game. I'm usually level 20 with 3 pokémon before I even beat the first gym leader.

The anime's actually surprisingly fun, but that could just be because the Dutch dubs are actually pretty good. I'm amazed at how they've kept Team Rocket around for this long, though.

Edit: Here I am, wondering if I should spoilermark Team Rocket

Do you know if anything changed catch-wise?

As i recall, while the total amount of Pokémon in the world might be up to 500 or such, the last game i played only allowed you to catch the last 150~ maybe 200~ ?

My precious Crabby and most others from the earlier games simply did not exist anymore.

How is this in these two remakes?

Every game so far has pretty much allowed you to catch everything, but Ruby/Sapphire pretty much required trading with LeafGreen/FireRed. That, and older pokémon don't open up till you pretty much watch the credits. Same thing for Diamond/Pearl/Platinum, with a handful of unobtainable pokémon, which are either handed out in events or by Wi-Fi.

And to answer your question, same thing here, a handful of unobtainables. Here's a list for the upcoming game: http://www.serebii.net/heartgoldsoulsilver/unobtainable.shtml

I see Arceus is on that list...

I bought Platinum during the last week of the Arceus handout at Toys R Us, but I didn't bought it at GameStop and didn't hear about it until later from a friend... I was going to go get it on the last day, but it turned out that my car was boxed in at home. My friend said I could borrow his to unlock the hidden content in Soul Silver when I get it though. He let me use his event Regigigas in Platinum also.

Things I like about this version a *LOT*
There is a switch on the touch screen that allows for the running shoes to be active 100% of the time.

It is magical.

I originally had Silver way back when, so I may get Gold now.

But Lugia is so much cooler than Hououh.

What is everyone gonna start with? I'll either go Chikorita or Cyndaquil.

When I get my actual copy of Heart Gold, I'm torn between Cyndaquil and Totodile. Totodile is INSANE for the first couple gyms, then gets wrecked.

I typically find that there are other better grass and water pokemon that can be found fairly early in the game, while a good fire pokemon is hard to come by for a while... so I usually go with the fire starter.

Because I'm REALLY bored, and people might find this useful, these are the version exclusive pokemon (links go to a wiki page for each respective one). There ARE a few I didn't list, and you can see them here if you want.

HeartGold:
-Spinarak
--Ariados {Lv. 22}

-Growlithe
--Arcanine {Fire Stone}

-Mankey
--Primeape {Lv. 28}

-Gligar
--Gliscor

-Phanpy
--Donphan {Lv. 25}

--Mantine

-Latias

-Kyogre

Soul Silver:
-Ledyba
--[link=hhttp://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Ledian_(Pok%C3%A9mon)]Ledian {Lv. 18}[/link]

-Vulpix
--Ninetales {Fire Stone}

-Meowth
--Persian {Lv. 28}

-Delibird

-Teddiursa
--Ursaring {Lv. 30}

-Skarmory

-Latios

-Groudon

Gym Elemental Order:

Violet Gym---Flying-
Weakest-Chikorita. Grass moves will do 50% damage to all his pokemon.
But, Cyndaquil and Totodile will both do only 1x damage (I don't believe either will have access to a strong attack).

Azalea Gym---Bug (with /Poison and /Flying)-
Weakest- Chikorita. Grass pokemon are weak to all three types, unfortunately.
Average- Totodile will do 1x damage to all.
Strongest- Cyndaquil will do 2x damage to all the leader's pokemon.

Goldenrod Gym---lolNormal-
Worst- Cyndaquil
Average- Totodile and Chikorita
-They will all do 1x damage, but the leader's second pokemon has a decently strong rock-type move, and water/grass resistance to it would be helpful.

Ecruteak Gym---Ghost/Poison-
Worst- Chikorita--Poison only takes .5x damage from Grass and is immune to normal.
Average- Totodile and Cyndaquil. All normal or fighting-type moves will do no damage, but their water/fire moves will do 1x. If either have access to a Dark/Ghost type move, it will do 2x damage.

Cianwood Gym---Fighting (with /Water)-
Worst- Cyndaquil--he will only do .5x damage to one of the leader's pokemon.
Average- Chikorita and Totodile-- 1x damage

Olivine Gym---Steel (/Electric and /Ground)-
Worst- Chikorita is average to Electric and strong to Ground, but does .5x damage to Steel.
Average- Totodile is weak to Electric and strong to Ground. Does 1x damage to steel.
Best- Cyndaquil-- 2x damage to Steel.

Mahogany Gym---Water and/or Ice (and /Ground)-
Worst- Cyndaquil- Strong against Ice, but Weak to Ground and Water.
Average- Totodile- Average to Water, Strong against Ground and average to Ice.
Best- Chikorita-- Strong against Water and Ground, and does 1x damage to Ice (but will take 2x damage from it).

Blackthorn Gym---Dragon and/or Water (with /Flying)-
Worst- Cyndaquil is weak to Water, average to Flying and does half-damage to Dragon.
Average- Totodile is average to Water and Flying, and does half damage to Dragon.
Best- Chikorita is weak to Flying, Strong to Water, and does half-damage to Dragon.

So, there you have it. Chikorita will be bad at first, but helpful later. Cyndaquil is usually worst or best (the only time he isn't worst, but doesn't perform particularly well either, he is tied with another choice). Totodile is pretty much always average.

Also to note, none of the starters ever get a sub-type. They are always pure water/fire/grass.

to solve the "what one do i pick!?" issue.
2 copies of the game, 2 DSes..and trade the starters over to your Game :p
(or if you have "friends", they can replace the need for 2 games & DS).

IMO, they needed to stop making Pokemon games after the original Gold & Silver. Does the series really need to keep going and going and going and going? It's just gotten annoying.

That being said, I'm playing Blue right now...on Super Game Boy. Because it won't be beaten as the best of the pokemon games alongside Red.

Do you have a reason, or this just completely arbitrary?

Because, why would they stop? The anime is still going strong (it SUCKS, but does that surprise anyone? Young kids still love it and don't want to shoot themselves because Ash's VA is nothing like the first one). The games sell very, very well--to the point where they can make "half" tiered games like Yellow/Platinun and remakes like Fire Red/Soul Silver and still sell a ton (a part of me really wants to buy ALL of them, especially both LG and FR since Pokemon was such a huge part of my childhood).

Plus, the games are just as fun now as then. Have they done anything really groundbreaking? Of course not. But each one is just new enough that it is a refreshing play. Plus, they are a great mobile game--you can pick it up and play for any length of time (ten minutes, an hour, two hours, etc.)

Plus, they are surprisingly deep. There ARE people who put a lot of thought and effort into designing a perfect team, which requires quite a bit of effort--they need to have the right personality, move set, special ability and EVs. Which, if you don't use a cheat system, is quite difficult and time-intensive.

Finally, add in "seeing" all 493 pokemon (and catching them, if you want to), including the special event pokemon you will either need to get in person or trade for, and you can dump a lot of time into it.

Absolutely no reason to stop.

Personally, I'm dying for a Pokemon MMO. I think I'd quit real life. O.o;;

The Pokéwalker is pretty nice as well. Allows you to level up and get new pokémon outside of actually playing the game. Plus getting a Wobbufet or Kangaskan before level 10 is kind of freaking amazing.

So, I played for a good chunk of time last night and got to Goldenrod City.
Whitney's Miltank is a pain in the *** to fight. Nothing like mostly killing it, only to have her come back with a Super Potion, and rollout til my Onix dies.

(also, if any of you guys are playing, I'd kill for a Totodile. Already got a Cyndaquil and Chikorita.)

Out of curiousity...

Since the new versions comes with that Pokemeter (the pedometer level up thing)... it is possible to link a Pokemon to that and then import it into the other Pokemon version? Or is that only a one-DS-only thing?
