Rebel Space Mission: Kidnap Imperial Security OfficerFollow

#1 Jan 23 2010 at 10:37 AM Rating: Decent
This mission has to be completed before I can get X-wing certification, which is what I've been working towards from the first time day of pilot training.

Has anyone actually completed this mission? If so, I sure could use some advice on how to get past the four waves of fighters in the "defending the gunboat" step. I've attempted it well over 20 times. Before I can kill one tie fighter in the first wave, the next waves of ties start pouring in. I've survived long enough for the gunboat to escape, but by that time, there's so many tie interceptors swarming me, I'm dead in the water with no possible way to make it to the rebel waypoint (which is the next step when the gunship escapes); then I get simply pulverized.

Unfortunately, the mission is over and you have to start from square one again and go through all the previous steps of the mission. Not to mention that the Y-wing is completely ridiculous when it comes to pitch, yaw, and roll control against Tie interceptors, but it's the only ship at this level that has enough mass to carry sheilds, engines, and weapons enough to stay alive more than 30 seconds against teir 3 and 4 enemy fighters.

I've read elsewhere that the mission can be completed solo, so I sure would appreciate any info or advice.

Umm to be honest the easiest way to do this mission is with some back up, but it sounds to me like your ship is under equipped as the Y-Wing is in fact a very good ship if properly equipped.

I would suggest upgrading your guns to Reverse Engineered ones, get a droid and the collection Engine, Reactor and Capacitor, this should make Tie Fighters a 1 or 2 shot event.

As for the P,Y and R that is improved by managing your speed during combat.

Thanks for the advice; much appreciated. I'm still a little new at this; how does on obtain the collection engine?

Well the easiest way is to search the bazaar for "Flawed or Damaged Engine or "'s otherwise you spend a lot of time shooting T1 and T2 ships.

Once you have collected and learnt all the parts you will get a schematic for the component.

Manage your x-wing & put 3 guns in it.
This is probably a timed mission, you just have to stay within coo-ee of the gunboat, and survive for period of time. Program your droid for maximum shields, then just chase your first Tie. Kills are irrelevent for a timed mission.

Another winning tactic for some missions is:
as soon as you start taking too much damage from these waves of enemy ships, just hyper to another SECTOR of the planet you are flying in. That way, you have not left the galaxy & the mission hasn't failed.
Then fly directly back to the gunboat, its maybe 12000K away so take your time (dont use boosters).
You will probably fid that when you arrive, all the waves of Ties have lost interest in you.
This 2nd method works in many missions, just set the hyperdrive well before your ship destructs. On the way back you can even drop into a station for repairs.
