how is the Sands of Destruction game? I tried to find some info on it, but it didn't sound very fun from what I read >.>

So I figured I'd answer this in it's own thread.

So far, I am enjoying the game. I only have about two and a half hours of playtime in it (ya, not a lot, but I've been busy with Star Trek Online), but it plays like any classic RPG would.

You play as Kyrie. In this world there are Humans and Ferals. The Humans live as slaves to the Feral, or at best a much lower class. Kyrie lives in a small peaceful town where Humans and Ferals get along pretty well.

The game has voice acting, quite a bit of it. The opening video was pretty good.

By watching cutscenes, and listening to what the characters say, you learn "Quips". These can be equipped to your character and they provide random bonuses, like additional attacks, increased experience, defense, etc. based on certain triggers like being attacked or defeating an enemy. I have yet to find out if you learn the Quips even if you skip a cutscene, because I don't want to chance it and miss out on anything good. (Plus I want to read the story).

So far the story is good. You aren't fighting the save the world. And you get a @#%^ing Teddy Bear to fight with you (who can kick your ***).

From what I've seen with other players, your skill setup is very important. With boss fights, the difference between an easy win and an fast loss is how you play the combos. In battles you have points that determine how many times you can attack. Skills can increase these, and if you get a critical hit you earn another. After attacking multiple times in a single turn you can preform a special attack. Your skills are leveled up and learned through CP points which are earned through battles.

The game isn't exactly hard, and if you like a classic RPG then you'll more than likely like this game. And I'm pretty sure the storyline was written by the same guy that did Chrono Trigger, Cross, and Xenogears. So really as far as RPGs go, the storyline can't be that bad. And the music is composed by the person who did the music in Chrono Trigger and Cross.

Edit:
Played again for an hour tonight, got my *** handed to me in a couple turns by a boss. Not sure what I'm going to do, gotta go back through and find out what I did wrong and where if any place I can grind out a few levels.

Played it for a bit, too. Got to a boss fight, got kicked back to yesterday, retried, won after 20 minutes, got a load of CS, battery failed me again and left it for a bit.

Overall, the game was kind of fun. Storyline's not half bad, even if it's a slight linear. Gameplay gets dull after a bit, especially since bosses aren't very hard, they just have a lot of HP.

Graphically, it's not too strong. The DS has prettier games, but it's not horrible once you get used to it. Sound is pretty okay, i've heard worse voice-acting and the music is pretty catchy.

The only thing I really, really don't like in this game, are the (loads of) random battles and the seemingly random turn gauge in the lower-left corner. One moment it shows a character having 3 turns in a row, the next your *** is getting kicked by the 3 monsters on-screen.

Anyways, if you have the patience, give it a shot. It's a somewhat fun game. It's a classical JRPG like there hasn't been for a while. If you don't want to play the game but like the idea of destroying a world, there's also an anime on the exact world and characters called 'World Destruction'.

World Destruction is also the Japanese name of the game (came out some time last year).

The boss I died on, a Beastlord called "Porcus Rex" (guess what animal he was? Ya, it's got a pretty corny naming system for the Beastlords). He wasn't hard because he had a lot of HP, he was hard because he could oneshot my characters, and was able to use combos that finished in AoE attacks. Compared to the previous few bosses which hit for 1 damage over and over and just had a ton of HP that made you fight forever, this guy was a huge surprise.

The game also includes a imbuing system, where you can add and remove bonuses to weapons. For a cost you can remove a bonus from a weapon (you get an item with that bonus for later use), for double the cost, you can keep the bonus-less weapon after the removal as well.

The game is pretty linear, especially to start. You aren't allowed to go anywhere except where you need to go. I'm hoping this is lightened up as you continue.

The DS is by no means lacking in the RPG category (some would say there are too many), but I think this one is pretty high on the list when it comes to their ranking.

Really? He was actually one of the longer and easier ones for me. Have you done the boss fight after that? They tore me a new one in 2 turns, hitting for quite a bit of damage and doing rather painful combo's.

I might continue later, battery's acting normal again, silly thing.

I've also had issues with ambushes. One ambush had me use 7 revive's just to win the fight, stocked up on supplies right after.

Ya, he hit Kyrie first turn with two hits, one for 88 damage (some sort of Bile attack), and one for 15 damage. That killed Kyrie. Then the next turn he did some sort of combo on Taupy, ending in a special attack where he eats a pepper and belches fire all over me. That finished off Taupy.

I probably could of finished the fight if I had revived everyone with Morte, but I kinda gave up after seeing my people get owned so badly. Figured I'd restart and try again. I just let him finish off Morte to get a feel for his combos and abilities a bit more and better understand the fight to do better next time.

I haven't played it in a couple days, been too busy to play any games.

so I acquired the game, it is- different. I'm just a bit past where the "green" guy saved us, w stole some sand bikes, and are now on another ship.

I'm not sure if I like the voice acting, I tried to paused the game and ended up skipping over (not sure If i missed anything, meh..). It also seems to be a bit..slow for me. I can read faster then they can talk, so yea..I have to wait for them to finish and then there is a pause before they start up again.
ugh.

I'll play some more of it and see if it gets any better (for my taste).

I'm burnt on Darksiders. I played through that game 3times and all I have left to do is get a few achievements that I don't really care about.

You can... "acquire" an undub version of the game. The original Japanese audio with all the English text. People say they like the Japanese voice acting better.

I'll see what I can find. If the flow is better, then yea I'll like it more. I just don't like that long (to me, it is long) pause at the end of each voice block.

So I started the Undub version yesterday for the first time. The opening FMV has a jpop song. The english version it's just a piece of instrumental music.

The two songs have a completely different sound. The instrumental piece is slow and kind of melancholy. The jpop song is upbeat (who knows, maybe the lyrics are depressing?)
