Not sure how many know this already, but I just found out last night that you can pick up a beta key from Target for $1.

Omg, what?

I'm so gonna go check on that right now.

[EDIT]

I walked around the electronics section for 40 minutes, and couldn't find one. T.T And, naturally, there was no one working in that department when I went. I found where the 1$ pre-orders were, but they didn't even have STO as an option.

I is a sad panda.

So that's what it is? I was trying to start the last patrol Smiley: frown

I still don't get my away team correctly. I think I'm doing it wrong. I beamed down and it was just me, no one else.

Did you add them to the AWAY team list in the ship status screen? It's the same screen that you choose bridge officers on.

Yes, I added them to the default away team. Then I went to beam down and it asked me to choose an away team, but it only had one slot, I chose one of my guys, and when I beamed down it was just me (similar to the first time on the borg attack).

I was going to try it again, but disconnected.

It was probably because I was in the team. Since the solo play AWAY team is the player and 3 NPCs, the game probably thought I was coming there so it balanced the team as 2 players and 2 NPCs (one from each player).

Too laggy and congested tonight. I have a feeling it's going to be crowded all weekend.

Maybe I'll start playing Sands of Destruction for the DS while I wait for it to clear up.

You only get to play as Federation until you reach level 6, then the Klingon Empire is unlocked. You can only play as those 2 factions during the Beta.

I wonder if it's possible to set up a controller to run the game correctly.
Seems like it'd be good.

I would try it, but I can't log on right now (Servers are too busy).

because I don't know (as I downloaded the game over night):

Is there just 1 server they are testing on?

If so then I'm guessing I'm not getting into the game until Monday/Tuesday when everyone goes back to Work/School (I know some people have Monday off).

t.t

after spending like 3 or more hours trying to log in, I get in!
Make a neat looking alien imo, and go in game. I took 4 steps and the game crashed XD

Character creation is pretty cool. I do like games that have a large selection to pick from. Unless someone has an odd mind like me, I don't think I'll run into anyone who looks like me...if I get to run around.

Thoughts:

While this game is certainly in Beta & incomplete, it does some things well & others not so much.

Pros:

Character Creation- Even though I've unlocked Klingon, I haven't made a Klingon Character yet. Regardless, just the federation side has lots of different option. There's the mainstay "races" (Human, Vulcan, etc.) + many races I'm unfamiliar with (not a Trek Fanboy) & even an "other" option. The abilities of the named races are psuedo-unique (plus you get to pick a couple more) or the "other" race can choose all 4 of their abilities. The physical look of your character as well as it's uniform is extremely customizable. Also, once you start the game & make it to base, you have the option to customize some more (it may cost game $ after beta, but right now it's mostly free).

Ship Customization- Once you make it to base, you can fully customize your ship. It's mostly free during the beta, but may cost in game $ once the game launches officially.

Space's Graphics- Flying around zones with different colored suns, nebulas, planets, rings, etc. looks plain old cool.

Ship Battles- Once you get the hang of it & upgrade your ship a bit, they're fun. Well, they're a lot more fun with my new "uncommon" shield MK II that allows me to fight multiple enemies while still prioritizing weapons & not getting owned. Before that, I would have to prioritize shields while slowly wearing down the enemies' shields before switching to prioritizing weapons & shooting a high yield volley of torpedos at them.

Cons:

Ground Missions- Mass Effect & Dragon Age are much better 3rd person "action" rpgs, look many times better, & are a lot more fun. You can't control your team members & their AI isn't fantastic. They get stuck if you sprint too much. The enemies' AI is ok, but they don't really use teamwork. The background, armors, & character models are not what a new 2010 MMORPG should look like, considering FFXI looks better & came out 6 years ago.

The Exchange (Auction House)- This is mostly due to the fact that since the game is so new, prices are all over the place. Up until this point, I've NPC'd everything I didn't need for $. While you can search for individual items, there seems to be no rhyme or reason to how they're displayed when you search all (It's not Alphabetical, by price, or even grouped by like items).

Crafting- Collect various items that are worth $0 to NPCs & when you have enough of them of various types, you can combine them with a common item to make that item "uncommon" (better & worth more $). It's, well, not great.

Currently pushing from level 9 so I can get a new ship at 11...Thinking of going Cruiser as I like big guns.

Use the bittorrent file if you are having connection issues. You can easily resume, etc.

Tried the Bit-torrent but it was very slow, after a day I was still 2 days away. Just happened to be checking out some forums and came across a post about my ISP creating a gateway for Wow that their customers can use, while there I noticed there game site had the file so I downloaded it from there. Took 3 hours without a problem and the download doesn't count against my usage. After a few more hiccups with install, I have it working but needs a patch, so I will get that going while I am at work. Will be Tuesday before I get to play, out to the Pub tomorrow for a poker night.

I've been playing for quite a while today. Played for a couple hours in the morning, and just logged off after playing for a few hours after I got home.

I almost reached level 8, got a few ship components worth about 1000-2500 credits each (Quantum Torpedo, Sheild Arry, and an Engine), plus a bunch of worthless consoles worth 500 each. Did a few exploration missions and security missions, etc.

Smiley: grin

Lightning fast download, definitely worth it!

So far, not that enjoyable for me, but it's early yet. The character creation is great though, definitely a plus!

It's not that good. It's only MK I, and while the damage is higher, the DPS is lower, it fires slower than the Photon torpedo. And I have an engineering console that gives plus to Photonics, which I assume increases photon weaponry.

I suppose coupled with a Tactical Officer's heavy fire torpedo skill, you could use it to do some higher burst damage once shields are dropped. But I prefer to spam torpedos as fast as possible after their shields drop.

Just equip both launchers in the front and set the Quantum to autofire.
