I personally prefer to use a Trackball for my general input device; but in general, what are the best various input devices and accessories, game pads, etc. to use for Eve?
Is it possible, and is there a driver to use a spaceball or SpaceNavigator from 3Dconnexion or similar as well ?

using a trackball shouldnt be a problem, its not a twitch game after all, and quite a few of the commands are hotkeyed anyway. gamepads are not really compatable with eve.. at least.. i can't think of any possible use for one.. all you need to play eve is a trackball/mouse and a keyboard.. the only other thing that you will eventually find is necessary, is a headset/microphone for voice comms. something of a necessity as there are corps that won't actually accept players who dont have voice comms..

Trackball is a very simple game that's down to basics. You would requires the equipments that matches the game style ie. just the bare minimals along with the headphones if you would like to have a better experience.
